Video Games: The Movie

Ойын-сауық

Available for a limited time on KZread, Video Games: The Movie!
A feature-length documentary that aims to inform and entertain on the process of how video games are made, marketed, and consumed by looking back at gaming history and culture through the eyes of game developers, publishers, and consumers. It's not just another film about the games industry but an attempt at something much more ambitious: the question of what it means to be a gamer, a game designer, and where games are headed.

I grew up with the Nintendo Game & Watch as my very first gaming device and a portable one at that. It blossomed into the Nintendo NES so to me it was Nintendo instead of Atari who started me on the videogame hobby. After several iterations of the Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox (and a portable Sega Gamegear) it was the PC that saw me through my gaming years from 1996 until now. Gaming has always been seen as a childish pursuit back in the old days but now it has developed into a multi=million industry which has no age limits and can be simple as a flash game on a mobile phone to the latest and greatest in a high-end gaming PC. It is definitely one of the most enduring forms of entertainment easily eclipsing movies and music due to it being an interactive form of entertainment.

This documentary means so so so much to me. It introduced a 5th grade me to the concept of game design, what goes on in the industry and even Queen of all things. I watched this thinking like a lot of people here that it was gonna be some epic crossover between games but turned into a wildly interesting and entertaining documentary about the history of the games I love. Here I am now, about to go into university for game design and chasing my dreams of creating a game I hope people will enjoy for years on end. All of this and more is due to this documentary, it is a major element of what has shaped me today and I am forever grateful that it was made and shared.

I can happy say that I belong to the first generation of video gamers and had a Magnavox Odyssey back in 1973 (Had Pong included). I am a 54 year old grandpa now and am still gaming on an Xbox one (also xbox 360, Gamecube and a PC). In the past I also owned an Atari2600, a Colecovision, Nintendo NES, SNES, Playstation 1,2 & 3, Genesis with CD add on, and a Dreamcast. Not to mention 4 PC'S. The best pc games imo were back in the 90's (golden age of pc games. Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Warcraft, Starcraft, etc.) 🎮😎.

It all went from flying pixels on black screens to the point where we’re approaching a full-blown metaverse. All that and everything in between is glorious in its own way. Grew up in the 70s? Atari was your hero. The 80s? Nintendo really went “Oh hey there, imma bout to save this whole industry”. The 90s? Rivalries galore, and an unthinkable jump into the 3rd dimension. As for the 00s? That was me. I still miss my Wii. But I’m about ready to move on, and with the idea of a metaverse implanted in my head, I do believe there really are no limits. Others may be perturbed, but this is an era I will personally welcome with open arms. Once a gamer, always a gamer.

This random documentary basically got me interested into not only video game history but video games in general and it I’ll always stick in the back of my mind.

My only complaint is that there wasn't anything about the GameCube, and that there wasn't much about Mario later. But that's more personal.
