VIDEO GAME SOUNDTRACKS THAT SHAPED PUNK AND METAL
Музыка

I talk about the video game soundtracks that shaped punk, metal and hardcore from the 2000s to now:
- Tony Hawk Pro Skater (Suicidal Tendencies, The Vandals, Millencolin, etc) and Tony Hawk American Wasteland (Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, etc)
- Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and the impact they had on bands like Dragon Force (thanks to "Through The Flames") and Fall Of Troy ("F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X")
- Racing games like Need For Speed (Rancid, Story Of The Year, Bad Religion) and Burnout (18 Visions, New Found Glory, Yellowcard, Finch) as well as Crazy Taxi, MX VS ATV, NASCAR Thunder and more
- Sports games like Madden, MLB The Show, FIFA, NCAA Football, and NHL
- Call Of Duty and how Avenged Sevenfold created the "Carry On" video for Black Ops 2
- Open World games like Grand Theft Auto (the LCHC and Channel X radio station curated by Keith Morris) and Saint's Row's radio stations (The Black Dahlia Murder, Miss May I, Shai Hulud, etc)

I'm always surprised no one ever mentions Brutal Legend on the PS3, one of the best examples of a legit Heavy Metal themed game with voice acting from Jack Black and even Ozzy Osborne. It expanded my tastes and knowledge within the older and Extreme sides of Metal, even leading many of us to find underground musicians like Mirrorthrone. There's also the first The Darkness game, where if you watch the TV you'll find various music video channels, one of which that plays Death Metal.

I think he hasn't included Doom, is because it was mostly a MIDI soundtrack composed by a composer for video game music, rather than licensed soundtracks from actual bands. Granted, they did take a few songs and slightly altered them (Alice in Chains - Them Bones, for example), but they were all still video game soundtracks that did not use real instruments or feature actual bands. Quake could have been included, although that soundtrack was more eerie dark ambient and industrial than rock or metal.

I'm not a video game guy, but a friend sat me down to listen to the LCHC station in GFA, and the first thing that I noticed was Jimmy G. from Murphy's Law as the DJ. Great review Finn!
Side note , whenever I get in an Uber and the offspring’s “All I Want” comes on the radio, I immediately grab for my seatbelt 🤓
Dude this is seriously one of the best videos you’ve made, based on the fact that you’re absolutely spot on!!!!!! I am living proof that the soundtracks of these games shaped me into the early 20s closet hipster I am🤣 My CD collection is filled with almost all the artists featured in soundtracks from games and movies, and I even make it a point to do guitar covers of some of the songs on my channel occasionally. I’m glad you mentioned how the soundtracks were put together and I’m glad I now know! I got some respects to pay like you wouldn’t believe!!!!!! Great video as always Finn🤘🏻🤙🏻👊🏻
YYZ being on Guitar Hero 3 totally got me back into Rush in the throes of my most metal phase. 'I Love You, Man" coming out in the same year solidified Rush as a nostalgic name for a lot of kids my age despite never having any other life memories related to their music.
Brutal Legend had a GIANT Metal soundtrack lol.. because it was literally all metal and rock.
it's worrying how much of my music taste can be attributed to the Tony hawk series - they're the reason I was listening to AFI and NOFX aged 10 instead of whatever was in the charts back then lol

SSX3 and 1080 Avalanche had such great punk/rock soundtracks as well. Cruising and flying down mountains to these songs was just so sick, especially the way the music would fade out / filter when you did airs. Awesome video.
NHL 06 got me into Bullet For My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold, and the racing game Midnight Club LA got me into Disturbed and As I Lay Dying
Damn back when times were simpler and you would make custom playlists just to hear a particular song! Also WWE smackdown vs raw was another favorite. Now I wanna play some Tony Hawk and Burnout lol
The NHL games got me into Billy Talent and Alexisonfire.

I love this video. It's so interesting how when we're presented with new music in a way that is secondary to the main entertainment we are consuming like a video game how our mental barriers and predisposition to whatever music it is (whether it's the genre or the band) we are able to take the music for what it is. I loved the songs in the old Tony hawk games and so glad you mentioned GTA the radio stations are such a cool thing to me and something that I think is sort of overlooked when taking in the overwhelming experience that is a FPS. I think the main take away I got from this video personally would be that music really can transcend stereotypes and I love seeing all sorts of music (especially rock and metal) make it into other mediums such as video games. Keep up the good work dude sending love from central China!
Been subbed just over a week. Really enjoying the content. 29yo and getting to be considered an"old head" these days. There's always atleast 3 things or bands you remind me of that I haven't thought about in ages. Especially that "What killed Skate Punk?" video. Keep it up man.

Swinging utters, lagwagon, I think no use for a name was epitaph or fat wreck too.
Tony Hawk games got me into those awesome late 90's rock bands.
Another great video! I think SSX and the Jet Grind Radio games also had some amazing soundtracks. Also hearing Tsunami Bomb in a JRPG was awesome.
This is a great video dude! Guitar Hero is what got me into music in the first place and is the reason I’ve gotten to tour and play all kinds of awesome shows and stuff. Hats off Finn! Great job.

SSX 3 got me into Autopilot Off, N.E.R.D, Fatboy-Slim, Yellowcard,MxPx, etc... Better soundtrack than Tony Hawk Underground 2
All of the Tony Hawk, Dave Mirra and Matt Hoffman game soundtracks opened me up to a world of new music.
1993 rock n roll racing. As a kid it was cool racing to Black Sabbath
In my opinion the actual metal influence goes even further back with Super Nintendo games like Doom, Mega Man X, Wild Guns and many more. These games shaped me growning up to like heavy music overall.
I'm 38. And i discovered the band Pennywise when i was about 17 playing Sega Top Skater arcade game. Still love the song Homesick to this day!
dude you killed it Finn, i really love this video because i remember hearing these bands and having my cousins explain "Rock" music at a really young age and showing me NOFX and Pennywise , and skateboarding. so i totally agree that it does sorta introduce you to a whole bunch
I know this is an older video but I loved hearing you give a nod to American Wasteland - that soundtrack was incredible and way more influential to me than the prior games. The soundtrack was so extensive and covered so many genres - and you're right, the Fall Out Boy cover WAS my introduction to Gorilla Biscuits. THAW + the internet really shaped my music taste while growing up in a rural area that had no alternative scenes.
Street Sk8r set me on my course for Punk and Ska.
Omg u mentioned atreyu for the first time!! They are my fav band off all time
Great video. I still remember all those skateboarding/bmx games, they really shaped my musical taste when I was a teenager. I still remember the first time I heard Bring The Noise by Public Enemy/Anthrax in THPS 2. My all time favorite band are Deftones and I discovered them trough Dave Mirra Freestyle Bmx in 1998 ( Be Quiet And Drive )and I was completely blown away. To this day I am grateful for that and I cherish that game in very dear memory. I grew up outside of the US (Croatia, small country in Europe) where there wasn't any metal or punk music coverage. Video games were often my only way to discover a new music.
the clips you used in this were on point man

Dude, chill. They were a one-hit wonder anyway. Nobody cared about them.
Sad you didn't talk about Brutal Legend
As a fan of metal, punk, goth, alternative, etc and a big gamer I can definitely concur that VGs had a big impact. Both GTA IV and V got me into many of these 80s HxC bands that were making songs before I was born and of course Tony Hawk and ATV Offroad games that got me into Lostprophets and Thrice. Even Radio X on GTA San Andreas got me into Living Colour and some of the 90s grunge like Soundgarden. I miss those days, nice video MBA.
Love the discussion of video games on this channel too. I think you should sneak it in from time to time. For me, Video games and music have always went hand in hand.
Forza Horizon 3 has an Epitaph station DJ'ed by Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die.

Not licenced music, but Mega Man X made me a metalhead back in 1993.

I think hearing that soundtrack at such a young age subconsciously set me up to love Iron Maiden riffs in the future
