Still love this song as a Canadian girl growing up in the 80s this one is special brings back fond memories. Love Eddie Scwartz as he wrote and released this first before the group America did a cove same year.

This is one of those tunes that comes over the radio on occasion and it causes me to pull over, lay my head back, and reminisce of times worth remembering and the girls who I'd love to dedicate this song to. It's a perfect song to listen to when you wish to revisit your nostalgic and best memories of the 80s. That's why it has the autoplay spot on my channel page. Thanks Eddie for such magnificent and beautiful memories.

One of my most favorite gems from the 80's. Only way to listen to it is LOUD - letting that synthesizer rattle your woofers! How many times have I played it? Lord only knows! Should have been #1 on Billboard, not just in Canada.

I'm listening to this a dozen times a day. It brings it all back, right down to the raw emotion of the pain from a heart that had been melted like a beeswax candle in a bonfire. This is a great example of the the kind of amazingly well crafted, heartfelt pop songs that came out of the 80s. It takes a lot of skill and general music know-how to put something like this together. Getting under the hood of a song like this is a great lesson for any aspiring songwriter.

On a random KZread spree here. Last time I heard it was back in '84. For 30 years I've wondered if it really was a song as I could only seem to remember the notes of the chorus. I almost skipped it but fortunately I let it play. Great forgotten track.

  • @carriersignal

+pappachook As far as Eddie Schwartz goes, I think this was his biggest (and perhaps only) hit. I don't exactly have any memories associated with this track, just always vaguely remembered the chorus. Not sure if it was from a film or not, although many good forgotten songs did get radio airplay from being in the movies. It is unfortunate that there aren't more mainstream stations playing this type of music today, not in my area. At least we all have KZread.

+carriersignal The Story behind this song is even stranger than I first thought. it turns out the version I was familiar with was by none other than Meatloaf!! from his 1986 album Blind Before I Stop. The weird thing is I live on the West coast of Scotland!! in a very small rural village. My mum was a Meat fan so I guess she must of played it a lot 😃. just find it so strange that it has taken until now to pop into my head.

What an awesome example of how truly great the music of the 80s was, cheesy videos and all. Simple beat, gentle rhythm, words that are easy on the mind, and a theme about love lost and love gained that we all can relate to it one way or another. Thanks for the upload as I listen to this 3 or 4 times a day.

Eddie Schwartz wrote and sang this song and was released in 1984. America sang this song in 1988. It's funny how people have it wrong and keep on saying America wrote this song . This is from wikapedia : Schwartz's third and last album for a major record label, Public Life, came out two years later and featured another Canadian hit with "Strike." Also included on this album was the original recording of his composition, "Special Girl," which was a minor hit for him and became a bigger hit for the band, America. Please please please stop saying America wrote this song it's false.

CanadianLdy68 Very often covers are the most popular versions, and people don't always know or care that it's a cover, for example Etta James's version of "At Last," Cyndi Lauper's version of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes's "I've Had the Time of My Life," to name but a few...

There are so many emotionally moving memories tied to this song that my heart goes from one end of the thought spectrum, all the way back to the other end..and then it does it all over again with an entirely different set of feelings. Thanks Regis. If you look at my other comments about the song, you'll see I lived in Toronto for eight years and drove the road often. I'd put put my mind in Eddie's place. It was north of the city in '84-'92 and when I lived there, looked exactly as the video shows it. Now it's completely paved and totally developed. I love Toronto still but it's one of those cities that can't leave one square foot of anything alone. Oh well, better than living in Detroit or many other U.S. metropolises.

Eddie Schwartz is a CANADIAN musician and Juno Award winner who had good success as a recording artist in the early 1980s, before becoming a very successful songwriter, and record producer in the late 1980s and the 1990s

Hard to believe that this video is in such good shape, since I think the song came out in 1979.

I'd never heard this version (the original) but I agree it is superior to America's rendition.

Sorry to respond 3 years later, but I was wondering if you had hear Meat Loaf's version. Also, not as good as Eddie's. Here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yo1orcyOlpy7aZs.html

Schwartz's third and last album for a major record label, Public Life, came out two years later and featured another Canadian hit with "Strike." Also included on this album was the original recording of his composition, "Special Girl," which was a minor hit for him and became a bigger hit for the band, America. Although his earliest hit as a songwriter for other artists was Pat Benatar's 1980 single "Hit Me with Your Best Shot"
