Video #5: Cement is Poured but I was Shocked to See -

Just a week ago it was a BARREN HILL . . . now it's taking shape?
The cement work comes fast and furious as the workers swarm the property trying to beat impending rain storms.
By the time they leave, we are STUNNED at the result they left behind . . .
Join us as we build our barndo basement on our Modern Barndo house, single-slope roof house!
Even though MOST barndos are on a slab, we've had a flurry of tornados pop up in the last few years not far from us, and it's only a matter of time before they head our direction, so for US a basement is a MUCH needed addition (albeit an added expense!).

Welcome to This Life We Live ( This 1 Life We Live ) formerly the WTFarm Girl channel.
Subscribe and follow along as we build our DREAM HOME after 10 long years of saving and waiting! It's a barndominium house plan with a shed style roof. It's a barndominium hybrid, so it's stick-built and on a basement because here in Michigan we get a LOT of tornadoes!
We'd LOVE to build it fully from the ground up, but sadly our local township only allowed us TWO YEARS to fully complete our home, so it's a race against time to try to get everything done BOTH with professional help AND on our own!
Building half of it on our own allows us a MASSIVE savings with our budget and makes this unique home design actually affordable!
We started with a low cost floor plan, to make this an affordable barndominium and learned how to save money on a house build.
We have some fantastic ways to save money on a new house and easy DIY home design tips!
This is going to be the coolest house on KZread by the time it's complete!
If you have suggestions or ideas, we'd love to hear them!

    It's normal for Concrete Truck Operators to dump excess concrete and clean the tumbler so the concrete doesn't set inside. You can direct the Concrete Contractor to dump the excess concrete and water residue in one spot so it will be easier to control and to remove later time.

    The hurricane straps are normal to be set at roughly 4”. Depending on the width of your wall they are easily bendable to conform to any width sill plate. As for the dug out area near the daylight wall… it is dug out deeper at the jump so when you backfill you still have 42” of frost protection on your 3’6” wall. Hope that makes sense. Enjoy your new project!

    Yep the cement is normal, use it as back fill. Also the 2x4 vs 2x6 wall studs isn't an issue as well, there will be a bottom plate put down that will be 2x6 and they will drill the holes to match up to those studs sticking up. From my understanding they put them like that so there will be more pressure towards the outside of the house to help stop any water that might try to get in,or at least that is what I was told many many years ago when my house was built.

    Your new home is going to be AMAZING!! 😁😁😁💗💗💗 You asked about the weather. I live in central Mississippi, and we had 96F today, with probably 95% humidity. Summer is definitely here. 🥵 Not a month ago, it was in the mid-70s for highs. 😂

    @@This1LifeWeLive You should come visit around Thanksgiving. The weather is typically incredible... in the 60s, with lots of sunshine and blue skies. The period from early November to late April is my favorite time of the year as the temperatures and humidity are reasonable. I would love to see Northern Michigan though; it's such a beautiful countryside. Sadly the only time I have been in Michigan is to change planes in Detroit.

    Great vide Suzanne!!! Plus the concert mess your talking about isn’t a big deal, if you can use it as back fill not against the house but like in the area where you were talking about the board and 9’ tall wall. That way you guys don’t have to have it hauled away

  • @bay9876
    @bay98762 ай бұрын

    I like the idea of a safe room since the build in a tornado zone. As long as the foundation is up tp PSI specks and is placed well, the extra concrete will be covered over on the back fill. Don't forget waste holes for the waste, water and power. Some people have sheets of channeled insulation added to the outside of foundation for the water dispertion around the building perimeter, depending on the area building codes.

  • @This1LifeWeLive

    @This1LifeWeLive

    So in our area they have to run drain tile and a collection tank on the outside alongwith gravel before they backfill, and the walkout basement wall has to have 2ft of 2" foamboard on the inside, presumably to prevent frost coming through? That one might be a newer code as neither the building supply company knew about it, nor the excavators, but the concrete guys told us :)

It's graduation weekend here and all the seniors are done with school 🏫 we've had plenty of rain, my field has some water in it, my riding mower broke down the belt slipped off the spindle, now I have to get that fixed, always something, have a good monorail weekend 🚜🇺🇲🇺🇲

    Wow, great progress on the home. Dumping excess concrete is normal. They can’t keep it in the truck because it will harden and ruin the truck. However, they really should’ve asked you where to dump it.

    You have so much going on this year for videos. I really enjoyed this. I don't know about your walls. I thought they set threaded rod in the pour to secure treated boards laying flat on it. You lay your floor trusses across it. The pheasant may be on the roof to avoid the dogs.

    *If ever in doubt.... and also going on your 'gut feeling', then call up the company ASAP. But just always be polite to them.... and get the answers that are on your plans. If someone in the company stuffed up... then they have to come out straight away to get it all sorted & fixed. As to dumping off unused concrete... they could have asked you ahead of time, should there be any left over... do you have an area that you would like it placed... so then ahead of time you could have got it prepared for any leftovers. ie: a concrete pad for a small shed... or even for your cabin to go onto. But I would be thinking that they must clear it up at their own cost 🙂nz*

    Been a while since I have commented, its the dirty old man from alaska. Going from trailer trash to a beautiful home is that step that just warms the heart. Those trailer homes for the most part never lasted near as long as you have spent in it. I think in the future maybe make some small forms for making sidewalk steps or something useful. I know that many companies take the mud home/place of business and make them into giant road barriers to keep traffic from crossing lanes or used for other purposes. But then they are so busy that making a ton of them is redundant for them. So before it sets up, you might just muck it into a place where it might help serve some kind of purpose. You are still as cute as a bugs ear... I too have never seen bugs ears but its a saying that is supposed to make a girl giggle. Looks like the daughter won't be in college before house is built. Remember tho, if your not having fun, then your doing it wrong.... sounds good from here/LOL

  • @This1LifeWeLive

    Sadly no . . . the township would not give us any hints on anything other than they assess the footprint of the house in the winter and base the taxes on that until it's completed. So it will go up instantly. They DID also say if we added a gift shop for our christmas tree farm it would go up too. So we tried to go as minimal as possible with just two bedrooms.
