Victron Battery Monitor Install and Review

Фильм және анимация

Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to your RV batteries. When I'm boondocking for more than a single day, I'm never really sure if my batteries need charging. I do have solar, but on rainy days it doesn't produce enough power to keep the batteries charged. Solution is to add this Victron Battery Monitor which accurately keeps track of the batteries State of Charge (SOC). With this, you always know how they are doing and when you need to fire up the Genny. It also will let you know when they are fully charged rather than guessing. Cost is around $225

I have an earlier version of this monitor. It was critical in understanding my actual power use. I realized under our normal usage, ice maker, computers, monitors, satellite receivers, TVs, etc., we use too much power to expect solar to keep up! If I cut out the ice maker and turn off the inverter at night, we can live off solar only, but really, without a monitor like this you’re shooting in the dark and probably using more of your battery capacity than you think, even to the point of shortening their life. A very worthy investment! Thanks for the vid.

Jumping Off The Cliff I don’t have an ice maker, but do use a coffee maker and microwave each morning. Overnight I got down to 69% of battery capacity. Solar is now starting to charge. 8:45 am.

Hi Ron, Great video, thank you! I saw your reply to Chuck Hudock below. I'm also curious about whether the shunt needs protection. We will be installing 2 LiFePO4 batteries soon, along with a DC-DC charger to protect the alternator (each lithium battery can pull 100A when charging). The charger will be in the battery box so the box must remain open (stock configuration) for cooling. I know the interior of the battery box does not get drenched, but it does get dusty and damp. I called a Victron dealer earlier today -- PKYS in Annapolis, MD -- and spoke with the owner (Peter, the "P" in the name). I described the situation and he recommended against it. He said about half of the failures they see are due to corrosion -- both the jack contacts and the PC board traces. Needless to say, he has a motivation to sell the Victron equipment but he did not try to sell me anything. He basically said, "Don't do it". He mentioned that Victron sells a waterproof box for installations similar to ours, but it is for their 'high voltage' model. He said some customers have made their own boxes from Pelican boxes (there's a photo of one on his website) but I am not interested in doing that myself. The only idea I had -- and I am not necessarily recommending this -- is to coat the shunt with "CorrosionX". It is used to protect electronics, but there may be some reason why it should not be used on shunts.

Good one Ron! I installed this same battery monitor on my 19 View and it works well. We can't make it to Q this year but hoping to get out there next year. Have fun.

Ron, I have enjoyed watching your videos, it has helped me greatly to understand my newly purchased 2017 Navion 24V. I am going to install the Victron Battery Monitor and I am wondering what is the best way to run the control wire to the area above the refrigerator? In your video you switched off your solar, did you add that solar switch as I can not find a switch on my RV. Thanks and keep up the good work

Tim Sneider yes I added the solar disconnect. Before that I put cardboard over the panels to turn it off. I’m planing on wiring the Victron display up near the one place but haven’t had time. Just got a “fish tape” to help run the wire thru the wall by the fridge and up to the one place. Will see how it works out.

Hi Ron! I really enjoy your channel and the great info in your videos. I’m just finishing up an install to my own rig including that Victron shunt. But..I didn’t get one with the monitor. Does that mean I can’t connect to my phone via Bluetooth on the Victron Connect app? Keep the videos coming my friend and please…do an up date on the alternator charging video will ya?

It is the monitor or the display that does the bluetooth. Will have a new video on my cross country trip in a few weeks. Alternator did great on the trip.

I was looking at the same monitor. I have the same rv. Added few hundred watts of solar to the roof. Plus replaced the house batteries with 2 100 ah batteries. But I was. If gonna do it. Might as well do 3. So I customize it for a third. Se how it goes

I have a 2017 View 24v and will be adding this monitor myself. A couple of things to work out. Mostly the shunt has a small PCB board and I assume will need to be protected from water. The battery well is open below. Any thoughts on ways to protest the electronics?

I put mine in the battery compartment. Should stay pretty dry there and not worried about a little moisture.

Have you given any thought to going to lithium batteries? It's the way I wanna go when we get our RV. We have a full lithium battery from a crashed Nissan leaf car running our cottage and it works great.

How does this monitor work with your 2 6 volt batteries? Are you monitoring both batteries, or seeing the average of both? What happens if one of the batteries goes bad would the monitor indicate that?

David Abraham the batteries are in series so the current is the same in both. And yes if either battery has a dead cell, the voltage will be lower.

Hi Ron I have a question about my 2018 Navion. For some odd reason when I am plugged into shore power it does not charge the batteries it only charges the batteries from the solar panel but when Its raining out I am out of luck and it drains the batteries. I would appreciate your input on where to start to find the problem. Thanks so Much

When you are plugged in, the converter takes the AC and converts it to around 14volts DC to charge the batteries. I would look there and check to see if it has a breaker.
