Victory Trailer Hitch

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I picked up a custom trailer hitch from "BigD Custom Motorcycle Racks" to install on my 2014 Victory Cross Country Tour.
I used a converter/isolator to keep the trailer lights separate from the bike lights.
Here are the color codes that I used on my bike:
Isolator wire Bike wire
Green/Right turn Dark Blue/Thin Pink stripe
Yellow/Left Turn Dark Blue
Brown/Running Dark Green/Pink stripe
Red/Brake White/Pink stripe
White/Ground Grounding point at tank
Large Red Fused power
Thank you for watching.

Great job Paul! I love that hitch, what a great design. Really neat how it is under the fender, someone was thinking when they designed that. Not sure that I would get a trailer but if I did it would easily be this set up.

Hey Mike, yeah I don't think I will be towing a trailer either. I think I will use it with a luggage rack to carry a cooler for when I take the wife out on a date/picnic. Thanks for watching. Ride safe.

Got my hitch today; it is a quality hitch. Now I have to decide on a pull behind trailer.

Wow, I like that setup ! Might throw a thin piece of custom cut truck mat in between that bracket and the bike crossbar to act as a mudflap. I did that to mine and it cut way down on the abuse to my inner fender. What kind of tire do you use ?

Hey Paul, nice job. Wondering what accessory fuse block you used. There are so many crappy ones on Amazon. I'd like to add a good one on my Vision.

It is a cheap one that I bought at Princess Auto (Harbor Freight in the US). I don't need anything more than that. There are some nice ones out there. Just make sure you use the proper size wiring for the current that you need, including the grounding wires.

Excellent diy video again Paul. Seems very simple with your explanations (even though I hate wiring stuff!). What are you going to tow on your XCT? You mentioned a 50lb towball weight limit, is there a max GVM for the trailer you can haul? What width of trailer are you allowed in Canada - can it be wider than the bike??

These are excellent questions and I don't have an answer for any of them. I really don't think I will ever tow a trailer although it is nice to know that I can if I need to. I originally wanted a hitch like this so I can attach various items to it like a luggage rack so I can pack a cooler on it for when I take the wife out on a romantic picnic/date somewhere. I am actually thinking of attaching my bicycle rack to it as well, now that would be something different to see going down the road. I probably don't need the wiring for what I am going to do with it, but I figured my viewers would want it and it's now there if I need it. Thanks for watching.

Paul Pomerleau Thanks for the quick reply. You just did it because! Haha, gotta love that! I like the romantic date bit - as you know I have the same color/year as you - I just use the rhs pannier as the ‘bar’ (filled with ice) when we go for a day trip. I was thinking it might be a safer way of taking my clubs to golf - I have been just strapping them sideways on the passenger seat but that means the wife can’t caddie!! Haha, am I evil?

Came across your video while trying to make a decision about what bike to use as a tow vehicle for my motorcycle camper that I inherited and you made my decision for me. The CCT has the simplest install I’ve seen for a hitch. Will be contacting the maker on FB soon. Do you have any idea what the tow rating is of the hitch? Stay safe!!!!

I have only towed lightweight cargo trailers for tent camping and such, or connected a metal rack onto it for a cooler. The seller of the hitch would probably be able to give you better numbers. Thanks for watching and be safe.

Hi Dean, no I don't have a trailer. I was actually thinking of making a rack to attach to it so I can bring a cooler & extra gear when the wife joins me on a picnic/date. I just have to make one. That will be another video :)

Hi Brux, no I don't have a trailer, I am planning on building a luggage rack to fit onto the hitch so when the wife and I go out on dates we can throw a picnic cooler back there. Thanks for watching.

There are a few options for tapping into the electrical wires. I saw a different version of the t-tap connectors somewhere else. What is the best way to tap into electrical wires. Apologize, I’m a newbie when it comes to electrical. Also. What is the wire gage?

There are many different types of splices for 12 volt wires. The ones I show in my video are probably the cheapest ones but I have lots of them and they work well for me. They are color coded for different wire gauges (AWG). Red=22-16AWG, Blue=16-14AWG and Yellow=12-10AWG.

Thanks Paul. I’ve been looking for plug-and-play options but it seems the more I look, the more troublesome it becomes. Any issues with the wire taps that you used this far? It’s been a while so if they held up until now, then they’re pretty trustworthy I think.

No issues with these wire taps. They are still working fine on the bike. I use them on cars as well and never a problem. Some people don't like them but they have always worked for me.

I bought a powered converter which has an isolator built in. I got mine off Amazon but they also sell it at any auto part store. BigD should have the same thing. I just bought one for my car, it is a "Curt Powered Taillight Converter #56146" but any equivalent one will work.

OMG I've had this thing for many years installed in various cars. I most likely bought it at Canadian Tire. I'm sure today they are smaller and better. The label on mine says "Hopkins Litemate". Any automotive store would carry things like this. Thanks for watching.

Hi, today I went to the dark side, the guy at the shop who installed the tire he did not balance it, he said it’s not that important and most likely will not need to be balanced, what do you think? It’s cross roads bike. Thank you

  • @PaulPomerleau

    @PaulPomerleau

I have heard many people who say they never balanced a motorcycle tire and never had any problems. When I used to do mine the old fashioned way very little weight was needed so it probably wasn't that important. However I now have the centramatic balancers always installed so they do it for me, also you could use dyna-beads inside your tires and never worry about it. Everyone is different but for me I liked them balanced.

Paul Pomerleau thank you for the information, my wife and I just got back from 120 miles ride, in the beginning of the ride it was a little bit intimidating when I turn but later felt fine, on the freeway I went 80 MPH smooth ride, I’m happy with it I’m hoping to get lots of miles, we pull behind trailer and that was eating the rear tire fast 4000-5000 at the most, I’m glad I went to the dark side but I got to get used to leaning without fear. Thank you
