The reason why colors were saturated and contrasting with another color that we wouldn't in our modern sensibilities would put together is that the lighting was by lamp light, candles, or gas light, which has a softer glow, therefore colors needed to stand out. Also in this era, dark haired women were considered the beauties to emulate, to stand out under the soft lighting, whereas today it is blonds. Today's colors are so very soft in relation to our brilliantly lit homes and businesses with LED and incandescent lighting.

Oh yes, please do more of these! I am obsessed with the idea of having some netted mitts, for some reason. I'm just intimidated by netting!

I wish theses companies would offer reprints of their magazines and books. I would love to look through them.

I'd venture to guess that most of them are long out of business. If they are pre-1923, they are public domain. Anyone can re-print them or what would be more likely scan and distribute them.

I agree about the buttonhook, Clovercat. It was an everyday item for well over a century because those buttons were a b*tch. lol

As to the buttons on the walking coat. It occurs to me that a lady that would have worn it would have had a maid to help her dress.

I would love to grab a cup of tea or my cross stitch I was working on but my cat is currently stretched out fast asleep on my legs while I’m sitting on the kitchen floor. Yes! It's great to see what was popular in the past. The first crocheted bedspread I made was in star stitch and fit a queen size bed. It was a gift for my mother. I was 16. When she passed away it was given to me.

That sounds like a bedspread my grandmother made for me when I was a child! It was for my trouseau, for when I got married. I still have it, it only comes out on special occasions lol.

Thank you for showing those magazines, it's so interesting! I never understand written direcctions for crochetting and knitting, could you, please, show how to do this beautiful crochetting pattern? When I was a kid in Argentina, my mom used to get a hand crafts weekly magazine. At the end of the year they would send cover for the book, so you could bind it. I still have several of those books.

I color code the stitches when reading a written pattern and for every comma I make a thick vertical black line and for repeats I draw bold brackets around the repeat sequence. I underline each abbreviation with a certain color. For example: sc = green, dc = blue, for 2sc = two green underlines, for a bobble/puff/popcorn I make a circle around the abbreviation, a box around a decrease stitch, etc. I hope this makes sense. Color coding has helped me tackle more complex patterns :)

I loved how you showed a close-up of all the illustrations, and then colored them in. That made the visualisation much easier!

For the star crochet stitch, I turn the work and come back the row with half double crochet (one on the center of the star stitch and one on the top) then I chain three and start the star stitch again. If you want to give it a more interesting look you can make the star stitches on the back loop only or if you want a even more interesting look you can use the back of the half double crochet

Yes please do more episodes like this. I'd love some books like that. Did you find them on eBay or where you live? I have 2 small bags made with that stitch. They are old and I'm wondering if they're from that era or newer. Thank you 😊❤️❤️

I've done netting! It's a real joy, and goes quickly. I have used old plastic gift cards for gauges and shuttles. You can cut those easily enough to suit your needs. As I became more proficient, I ordered a set of really nice copper gauges and shuttle from an Etsy seller. I'm like you in that I have a flair for all things arts and crafts, so I can literally dabble in all and have mastered quite a few disciplines in handicrafts. Have fun!

I very much enjoyed your delightful afternoon tea with entertainment a beautiful lap-pup and bringing to life - like magic - a craft from an over hundred year old magazine😊 I've been lead to believe one of the reasons we nowadays think of subtle colours being the norm for historic fashion is because the examples we still have from the times have faded after over a hundred or hundreds of years. Our ancestors weren't minimalist, I do not think - more always seems to have been more for much of history.

I recently crocheted a scarf for my sister using the modern star stitch so its interesting to see the difference of how were done then and how they are done now.

When they were talking about the economic change from 20 years ago, it was for most people. War had a devastating effect in the South because of the Confederacy printing money like it was candy and the supply chain disruptions for in the north. Immigrants staying in cities had what we look at as a hard life, and was, but from what they came from they weren't relying on a government to feed them or one that taxed them into starvation. Those who moved west at the time opening farm land (yes, taken from Amerindians) allowed for immigrants to own property and farm. So anyone looking at economic times in 1880s and comparing them to the 1860s it was a new world.
