Victor Davis Hanson On The State of the Union . . . and a Biden-Trump Rematch | GoodFellows
Following Super Tuesday’s results, with the US presidential election still the better part of eight months away, a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump is all but certain. Victor Davis Hanson, the Hoover Institution’s Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow and author of the soon-to-be-released book The End of Everything: How Wars Descend into Annihilation, joins Hoover senior fellows John Cochrane and H.R. McMaster to discuss where Biden and Trump stand on “shrinkflation” and the US economy, America’s involvement in overseas conflicts, plus the likelihood of Democrats replacing a struggling Biden at their August national convention and Trump running a disciplined campaign despite his legal travails.
ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

A fantastic dialogue. H.R. isn’t wrong about the global community hedging, and Hanson is right about Americans being sick of endless war and deflection from domestic issues. The American taxpayer is sick and tired of being squeezed both ways.
When I saw that Hanson and McMaster were on and that they were going to include Ukraine as an issue, I knew immediately that sparks were going to fly - and I wasn't disappointed! A Neocon Vs a Magacon! It was still cordial (after all, their paychecks are written by the same institution). Since their offices are next to each other at the Hoover Institution, I can only imagine how their conversations go (about Ukraine) in private!
I'll Always give a Thumbs Up for Any Podcast that has Victor David Hanson speaking 👍
I don't think Trump will give the Ukane more aid. I also find China more of a threat than Russia.
Professor Hanson is one of the greatest minds of his generation. I greatly enjoy his well informed commentary here and look forward to listening to his podcasts. Keep up the great work!
Outstanding. !!! A civilized discussion....... taking a look at the facts. Disagreements without the vomiting of emotions and hysteria. Hallelujah Jesus!!! 😇 Maybe there is hope for our country. First time visiting the Hoover Institution. Love Victor Davis Hanson....watch him on various on-line videos and podcasts. Have his book "The Dying Citizen." Gave copies to a couple of co-workers also. Going to get the next one. Looking forward to it.
Very nice to see friendly debate between Victor and H.R. I can see they are on different sides of the issue, but both sides put their case forward very well - lots of food for thought. Hoover and GoodFellows should have more guests over who disagree for quality debate like this.
What a great history lesson. I used to think history was boring. Must of been my teachers, huh.

I have thought the same. Also, maybe now that we are older we see the correlation and relevancy.?
I love you VDH may God continue to fill your head with His Wisdom

VDH for VP?😅
The quality of this conversation is leagues above anything I’ve watched/heard/read, in years. Victor Davis Hanson is brilliant and he’s in good company at the Hoover Institution. Bravo!

Hanson's geopolitical views are repulsive.
every word from Victor Davis Hanson's lips are rubys and pearls to me.......I am impressed!
More Victor Davis Hanson !
I have loved Mr. Hanson for years! Classics and History are my bread and butter. Also really like the Brando intro. "I could've been somebody!"😂👏
Thank-you Victor you have so much common sence and I follow your opinions and will by your new book---again thank-you guys.
We should’ve voted for Ross Perot over 20 years ago. People should quit voting for career politicians. These are the people that are the problem. They are out of touch.

I did vote for Ross Perot, he was a great man.
Victor Davis Hanson is a national treasure!
Excellent work. But, "people are not dumb"? It's time we address the elephant. Our public schools are performing as designed.
Great debate…you will not find this quality of discussion anywhere on the internet. Thank you.
Really enjoyed VDH on this episode.
Without a doubt, this is my favorite show, regardless of the media. I always learn something worth learning.
Also, on the Ukraine, I do not believe Putin wants to be under China’s thumb. They are not two countries that have anything in common if left just to each other. If we pull Putin in our orbit he would be much more agreeable to negotiate. We also need to be PAID, in someway for our military support. We cannot do this for free anymore
It´s refreshing seeing the Hoover Inst having FINALLY a debate on the Ukrainian question.
The best show, important to listen, very refreshing and informative and kind of optimistic!! Thanks a lot!!
Thank you VDH! You made much more sense to me than all of the others.
Thanks for allowing Dr Hansen to push back against these “therapeutic” thinkers with his “Tragic” thought. I almost gave up on this show because it never had its most distinguished Military Historian on to balance the panel. Good job!
Great discussion.👏
Awesome show!!!! Loved every minute!!! Loved the back and forth of these distinguished people!!!
Yay! Another Goodfellas, and VDH to boot. It’s a good night.
"...feign sober and judicious conduct..." LOL!!!! Great One, Dr. Hanson! 45 will definitely smile when he hears that...
A nicely contentious episode! This one was fun, gentlemen. Thank you!
My fav podcast is back. Will definitely watch. Big fan from South Africa.
No wonder the US loses every war the past 3 decades, we have generals like McMaster.
Nice to see someone effectively pushback on the optimistic position on Ukraine.
On The Waterfront!! One of the best films ever made.
I have listened to McMasters for over a year now and I can't get out of my head that he must be blindly committed to the American Military Industrial Complex. Never once does he condemn or criticize the use of the military. And, Oh boy, is it Sacred to him. I believe he worships at the alter of the AMIC.
Victor Davis Hanson has such a mild mannered force of both personality and knowledge. He is measured and balanced with historical and current application to present an unbiased opinion. Congratulations to the panel you are all enlightened minds and gentlemen... Good Fellows says it All.
I think we have an excellent opportunity as advisors to fast and pray that God would provide direction for all parties involved Amen (May it be so)

Yeah VDH is the wisdom this country needs.
Fantastic show. Thanks.
Good one! Thank you!
Please bring on Stephen Kotkin to talk about Navalny and the upcoming Russian election!
Victor, please...Your statement that the Russian limited operation [which it was in the beginning] was an act of aggression [when the Minsk agreements to end the war in the Donbas were ignored] the invasion of Ukraine was really an act of survival and mercy for the Russian citizens of the Donbas. And then to hear how we have to keep arming Ukraine with more weapons to "win" when we are not capable of that mission or we would have already accomplished that.

Oh yeah, like the "mercy" shown to Navalny? Putin isn't in the business of protecting Russians, he's in the business of oppressing them. He doesn't have the legitimacy to rule the Russian federation let alone parts of other countries.
Excellent discussion. Thank you.
It's great to hear an excellent debate. I wish we had more of this. Thanks!
Thank you guys, Information = knowledge
One of the best!
What an awesome discussion. Thank you gentlemen! God Bless.
The rematch is not between those two individuals. Is between the people , the intellectuality and the youth against the class in power.

The battle is between isolationism and traditional, strong foreign policy. Informed folks support the latter. Ignorant folks are isolationists.
What a wonderful experience it has been to listen to these intelligent gentlemen. When they disagree they can explain their positions with civility. Thank you, Hoover Institution.
I love watching VDH. Such a knowledgeable person.
Great Show!
Well at least they didn't hold back.
VDH and McMasters need their own show.
Always good to hear a polite debate among gentlemen. Thank you all.
VDH won this discussion in a bloodbath.
Great show
Thank you!!!!
What was the point of having John Cochrane on this program, if you weren't going to allow him to get a word in edgeways?
Here are my examples, 1980s Spain, 1960s France, 1910s Canada, 1990s South Africa, 1950s Japan. And 1980s Brazil. Of divided lands that sustained stable democracies. Plus 1950s , west Germany, Luxembourg, and Belgium. And maybe 1970s Italy.
Excellent
thx guys!
McMasters needs to slow down on filling out TDY vouchers and spends some time in the US looking at the American decline in recruiting and capabilities - the fact is we have none. Moreover, the saki has gotten to him if he actually thinks Ukraine can be capable of fighting as a modern combined force within the next ten years, even with free equipment.
Good show!!!
"I never understood the logic of a country that has 30 million people vs 144million trying to do a Guderian or Patton breakthrough of that Maginot line of minefields..." The look on HR's and Cochrans face when Hanson said this is absolutely priceless. Finally someone on the show to challenge them on the mere *facts* of the reality of this war. Great respect for all of these gentlemen, but I have always found the optimism surrounding Ukraine's chances in this war baseless and counterproductive for Ukraine's cause. They wasted a lot of equipment and men on that Summer offensive that could be used for defense today.
Great stuff
Ended on a mother beautiful note.

These people are still living in the early 90’s 😒
This was great
"Hope is a charlatan that never ceases to deceive. For me, I was never happier than after I had lost it." Nicolas Chamfort: The Great Fellows do not revive my own lost hopes, but it is comforting to know that such people endure: Many, many thanks men. 🥰Mick the Hick.
Top flight job by reasonable, knowledgeable, thoughtful individuals all. Always highly impressed by the vast knowledge, wisdom, and articulate capabilities by VDH. A true American treasure. Should be Trump's Chief of Staff, or some other highly impactful position in the leadership. Thanks to each of you for an excellent discussion and expression of different views in a discussion rather than an attack on one expressing a different view.
Russia can sustain this effort. This is a war of attrition and NATO is losing. VDH is terrific.
Alas, inflation is more than monetary stimulus. It is also wage / price spirals and if you dont think we are currently caught in an inflationary loop you probably argued inflation was transitory depsite year 3+ of core inflation being twice the target rate. Keep telling yourself it is solved by a target rate and real rates that are barely positive

Whatever you do, don't look at employment cost index growth, don't look at labour unit productivity, don't look at cost pass through and certainly don't use math for your forecasts. Go with your gut, it is sure to work.
How about this for more descriptive accuracy, American First and the DEMOCIDE Party!!!

The last comments about the self-loathing of our professors is true. I hope their students can see their way clear.
I wish VDH was on all the time. I really like how he isn't afraid to push back on the ideas of others. It makes the conversation much more dynamic and keeps things from being just head nods between everyone. I'm oversimplifying of course, there are minor disagreements, but the questions that VDH asks as far as Ukraine are really important to consider, especially if you support the military aid to the Ukrainians.
Excellent discussion gentleman. And also, you're welcome title guy :P
Paul Scofield in Man for All Seasons
Not another cent for Ukraine. In fact, not another cent for NATO.
Come to Europe THOUSANDS OF UKRAIAN MEN LUVING HERE!! Seriously thousands of them Europe has taken in tooo many and the amazing loss of life? Is the rest of the world missing smthg Kiev on tv last week place is hoping the program was showing a beautiful new book shop opening? I can’t believe what I’m listening to hear
Could you imagine what it would be like if either side of the aisle politely said “ I have to disagree with you on that and here is why.”. And then politely and civilly talked it out until Both sides came to a sensible conclusion .Wouldn’t that be something? Would a world it would be .
Now I know why VDH isn't invited on the program more often......🙄 He makes EVERYBODY look bad.
I can't survive...and the country is lost. It's too late. I am hopeless
With all due respect, at 24:25, it is purported that Putin broke the Minsk Agreement. Merkel admitted, as was confirmed by Neftali Bennet, that this agreement was but a means to allow Ukraine more time to prepare for what was on the part of Nuland and her cohort, an anticipated and sought after military conflict. .
Ultimately without convincing THE VOTERS arguing among the experts is irrelevant.
Excellent post. thanks.
It's the Ukes that have suffered the mass casualties: as many as 500,000 dead. T'here are no Ukrainians left to fight. The average age of the Uke on the front line is over 40 years old.
Wonderful show, fellas!

I get a little adrenaline dump every time I see a new Goodfellas episode in my feed. I'm not sure what that says about me, but "wonky nerd" is probably part of it. 😅
What about Kennedy?
I appreciated the debate, but I simply can't agree that any and all future positive geopolitical outcomes in the ME are dependent on the US having an open-ended blank-check policy on Ukraine. Exactly how much money would it cost us to "win" this war? Is it even winnable in the conventional sense?
Love listening to VDH, but his predilection for Patton as a great general is a concern...
@26:10...so more, better weapons will lead to...........LESS death?
Great show and movie
Incredible discussion, I just wish the main stream media had the intellectual bandwidth to understand the content of this discussion and convey it to our general population. Unfortunately, the mean intellects charged with being the third leg of democracy aren’t up to the task, and worse in many cases saboteurs. God help this country.
How healthy is it for the political spectrum of fellows at a major academic institution to run from X to Z?
Idiocy: "The MURDER of Navalny!"
I absolutely love reading VDH. However, listening to him speak extemporaneously can be downright painful. We seem to have lost the ability to disagree vehemently while remaining civil. I applaud the panelists and their respectful debate.
I love it when I watch this one month after the fact 🤑🤑🤑🤑 How is ALL that bloodshed working out for us 😜🎭
