Just stumbled on to your videos. Been to this area quite a bit over the years. I am originally from Kentucky. Just up the Ohio a bit in Henderson. My dad was from Marion KY just a stone's throw from Old Shawneetown. Seeing this town brings up stories from my dad. He use to go across the river to play music at one of the local honky tonks. On one of his trips over after he got done playing he was walking down the street waiting for his ride, the local Sheriff stopped him and arrested him for various charges. One of the charges was him only being 17 (1952) at the time. He looked older because he was 6'5 and 200 lbs. He said the Sheriff stole his guitars from him while he was sitting at the police station. My dad thinks one of his brothers told on him to keep him from going across the river to play music. His mom worried he would get in trouble. Well, he did. Lol He ended up getting on a train to go to California to be with his dad. They divorced 10 years earlier. Watching these videos brought back a lot of old memories with my pops. He passed 14 years ago. I now live in Utah, where moved to in 1979 the fifth and final time we moved between KY and Utah. I am doing my darndest to make my way back home. I miss that part of the country very much. I'm hoping I can make it back in the spring. Thanks for the video, brought back a lot of great memories. Take care

Bittersweet...I can tell. I lived in a town like that 40 years ago. I have such wonderful memories, when it seemed people were more decent, and recovery from1970s recession gave us hope, jobs. I know my parents struggled but stuck together through the hard parts. Ironically it was actually success and optimism that split them up. God bless.

Honestly with the money you would spend on a home in a larger metropolitan area, you would be able to own a really nice home. I live right outside the city limits, in a small rural area. Nice 5 acres of beautiful land. Two bedroom and a huge garage you can park a semi in. (yes the garage is larger than my home😂) but we can always expand.

I had a buddy who lived in Southern Illinois so I spent quite a few weekends down that way back in the early 2000's. The one thing I noticed about that whole region is how everyone of these little towns look the same, each are also dying at the same rate but still find ways to hold on despite the grim reality. It's strange how you can be driving along and suddenly there are a few random side streets off the side of the road indicating there was once a town there, especially when there aren't even enough houses to justify how many streets are left in place in some of the areas.

If they don’t do that they should give Government a timeline to fix stuff and if they don’t fix it in a certain time period they should be fined a certain amount of money and it should go to the places where it’s actually needed.

Was in this area staying at a very pretty state camp ground about 2 years ago. People were nice there but the poverty is overwhelming. The video's comment about denial is misplaced. Illinois citizens have ended the careers of many state reps, and one governor, over even suggesting modest raises in taxes. The state is filled with citizens that deny taxes are needed to make lives better -- and the majority are from down state not up state. Chicagoans and suburbanites know that students don't teach themselves, roads don't heal themselves, and businesses look for places with a good infrastructure, and allow for tax revenues that support that. A place with good schools, and services are where people try to live and what businesses seek. People leave towns with bad service and businesses don't even look at places that don't have this. The cycle of bad services happen when a place is deprived of enough revenue to provide those services -- not the other way around.

I was born in Harrisburg and grew up in Rosiclare and Golconda. Harrisburg and Paducah were about equal distance and were considered "TOWN". We played Equality and Shawneetown in basketball. Old Shawneetown was considered to be a "Rough" town, someplace you went if you were looking for trouble, a place to drunk, gamble, whore and fight. Harrisburg and Womble Mountain and Williams Mountain (Named after my ancestors) are where the hills of Shawnee National Forest end and the corn and beanfields begin. If you're lucky enough to be born into a family in which your father was a state or federal employee, or worked for a mine and/or was in a union you could probably get a job, that or you had to buy your way in via a "Campaign Contribution", other than that you had to either go work on the tow boats or join the military. I worked for the IDOC and then joined the military. IL is as corrupt as it gets! Federal, State and Local municipal politics are as corrupt as it gets! Not only do you need to be a legacy, you better be a good democrat if you want a job.
