If you look at her filmography, Lee Grant was able to keep working throughout the 50s through early 60s when it fell out of effect. Not many notable roles but she was able to keep working.

The New York Television blacklist wasn't enforced in the strict way that the Hollywood blacklist was in the first few years. But over the course of 12 years, and right after a huge breakout and Oscar nomination for Detective Story, Lee Grant only did a few independent films (therefore they were exempt from the blacklist) a short-lived stint on a recurring series, and a handful of live television plays, all filmed in New York. With the recurring series, she was fired in 1953 because an owner of a company that advertised their product on the tv channel it played on complained that a blacklisted actor was on the show and got her removed. With regards to the live television plays, those were put together by brave independent producers, and the few channels that aired those live plays were just brave enough to air television content that had people from the blacklist involved.

I saw Robert Taylor stand up as a friendly witness and tell the committee that he saw and heard certain Hollywood personalities act or say things that seemed unpatriotic ( I think those were his words). It seemed as though he wasn't adversely affected by that professionally; but I myself think I would have shunned him for the remainder of his life in film.

Larry Parks, an Academy Award nominee for Best Actor for The Jolson Story, was destroyed in terms of his Hollywood career, and John Garfield, a highly regarded star of numerous films, was negatively impacted and died before the age of 40. Lee Grant ultimately returned to Hollywood in the TV series Peyton Place and won an Oscar for Shampoo. Some actors returned to prominence, including Zero Mostel and Jack Gilford. Elia Kazan, the Oscar winning director, continued his career after naming names.

Exactly as I describe it in my book Jesse James Soul Liberty, Behind the Family Wall of Stigma & Silence in my chapter on Jesse's cousin Daniel Lewis James who was blacklisted as a Communist with Norma Barzman in this film short and her husband Ben. Dan's daughter Barbara James gives a riveting firsthand account in my book of Hollywood under government siege when two men in dark suits and snap-brim hats showed up unexpectedly at the James home in Hollywood on a sunny morning. Dan's screenwriting career and success as co-screenwriter of The Great Dictator expired in slow motion. He went underground writing B-movies like Gorgo. It should not be forgotten that serving among HUAC persecutors was Richard M. Nixon.

If only they all stuck together and boycotted the studios etc, that would have put some fear into them and they would have relented, I'm sure about that. Question is, could it happen again in this era? I suppose anything is possible, but I doubt it very much. Let's hope so anyway.
