I think that the terrible photoshopped pictures might be intentional. A test for the victim's gullibility. If the scammer sends such blatant fake pictures, and the victim sees nothing wrong with them, the scammer knows he's got a prey there.

And the appalling English. It almost acts as a gullibility test, anyone who doesn't spot glaring errors and blatant photoshop isn't going to question ludicrous stories. I do feel sorry for the victims because they've been deliberately targeted, manipulated and exploited. But some of the stories....I know sunk cost fallacy n all that but it's still amazing that these insane and ever-increasing situations don't trigger any alarm. Scary really.

That’s also why they intentionally use poor grammar and bad spelling on ‘official documents’. If someone can look past that, they’re more likely to fall for the scam.

This analogy doesn't sit quite tight. This woman was expecting something in return, Love, attachment and romance. It is a fact people are yearning for ronantic love. The photos used as bait are for a stereotypically handsome man. How many of such men has this woman come across and talked to? Attention-bomb this woman and she was ready to run to the bank, take a loan and send money.

This scammer’s story is one of the most ridiculous I ever heard. Barrels are blowing up on an oil rig, actually killing people, and the only person who can save the day is a sixty-something woman whom he has only met online! When that scammer said “I’ve always wanted to meet someone like you” he wasn’t lying; gullibility at this level is priceless.

And my impression is that many, if not most, of the people victimized by these scammers are profoundly naive and made incredibly vulnerable by loneliness and isolation. I grew up knowing many people who had never left their home state or even home county in their entire lives! Luckily, the internet is a thing that practically *anyone* can use nowadays! I work for a bank and we are continuously trained on detecting romance scams with our customers. We have gotten to the point where we will refuse to process a wire or fund transfer if the red flags are there on the banks end. It is so sad and you would be surprised at how common this is! Once that money is sent, it's gone - never to be recovered.

Years ago, my grandfather's neighbor scammed him out of his life savings. The guy was apparently going to the bank with my grandfather to withdraw money when an employee recognized him from church, pulled him to the side and asked if he was ok. My grandfather apparently said, "this man is taking all my money." We got involved, social services got involved. They evaluated my grandfather and determined he was of sound mind and that nobody could intervene! That guy ended up getting at least $250k, all spent on dr_gs and gambling. He also was "borrowing" my grandfather's new car and drove it into the ground. We also found out my grandfather had been paying out of pocket for my grandmother's nursing home care when he had a lifelong pension and medical coverage. I'll never know how TF that happened but that's all down the drain too. My dad has 5 living siblings and nobody wanted to help. They didn't care until after he passed away and it was time to sell the house. If they knew just how much money there could have been to fight over, they'd sh1t bricks.

Maybe I'm odd but I'm happy to be spending my retirement as a single woman doing what I want, when I want, without having to worry about a man, and I sure as hell don't want one I have to pay for!

Why would you take out 6 loans for somebody you met online, and have never met? What makes her think they would even get on, or be attracted to each other in person? Anybody who have used dating apps know, the majority of people (who are actually REAL) are not suited to you; they may be nice people, but it usually ends up with the person not being your type or suited to you in some way. She put ALL her trust and faith in a guy who she has never met, does not know is real, but more importantly - ladies - do you want a guy who is so helpless they cannot manage their money, and need you (a complete stranger) to sort out their life? It would be a no thanks for me. P:S : The hilarious thing is the scammer goes from having 'No money' (and needing her to send him some), to him sending a package containing 2 million!
