In March 2014 VICE went to Uruguay to interview the country's president, José "Pepe" Mujica. He's known as the world's poorest president. Mujica donates 90 percent of his income to charity, and lives at his modest farm rather than at the lavish official presidential palace. And in December 2013, he led the effort to make Uruguay the first entire country to fully legalize marijuana.

Pepe is a humble gentleman, I live in a small city in Uruguay and I have seen him walking around on the streets like every other person.

Ali Alshakhs I know where he lives, but I highly doubt he'll receive a stranger without prior notice. Though you may actually get to see him if you visit the school he founded in front of his home in Rincón del Cerro.

Jose Mujica is a rare find now a days. You never see people this genuine and awesome as him these days
Mujica seems incredibly kind and wise. It's such a shame that the interviewer was so terrible and immature.

+picklesnorf101 This "chat" was organised to talk about cannabis. You can have those part in the documentary about legalization in Uruguay in the description of the video. This is the "bonus" uncut interview. Of course they will talk a lot about cannabis because this is why they went to Uruguay first. This is exactly like the interview in the documentary but with extras question which are not about cannabis.

"We recognize reality, and we try to organize reality as best as possible". You should read this quote over 1-1000 times until it really sinks in. Maybe the best thing that was said in this entire interview.
I adore this man! Absolute legend, I visited Uruguay last year it's a beautiful country also....... mucho amor de inglaterra!

The American government is a corporate syndicate, so that is an impossibility, for now. A great place to live, but it could be a lot better.
You can just tell that man has a good heart, and is a lot smarter than most people.
I learned about Pepe today, and what I've read about him makes me wish that more world leaders were like him. Viva Uruguay !
Nice idea to have the interviewer and the interviewee dressed the same. Great look pairing.

What a cool dude. He's been through things and came out the wiser.
What a decent human being. There are many decent human being on this earth, but are many of them heads of state? I think not. Uruguay, you are very lucky indeed!
I am currently in Uruguay for a month. I think Pepe is the world's greatest leader ever. His wisdom comes from a deep understanding of our consciousness that was developed from years in confinement. He is individually free and his wisdom is most profound. I can come back to this video and listen to him speak again and again. If at an individual level we all believe in his realizations about freedom, we'd be a much better human race.
his definition of freedom. oh my that answer was so good and so unexpected.. he is the epitome of the older you get the wiser you are..
This man is the epitome of wisdom. I wish we could have that in a young body. Think of the way someone who knows so much could revolutionize the world.
I just love this soul, he spoke from within his inner most cognitive conscience, his simplicity is what matters, he is the Mahatma of Uruguay, the Mandela of his people and the friends of all humanity, he is of the ancient vedic seers of Uruguay.

Rx 12 years of night is a movie about this man and his friends, a must watch, please watch and tell me what you think.
This guy speaks the truth. Very wise.
This man awesome!
That guy is just a wonderful human being...
This guy is amazing donating to charity . Possibly the first president to understand more than one view like the rest
Wisdom and sensibility in each subject. Love this man.
I just watched 12 years of night, I will always respect this man and those who suffered with him, ppl watch this movie, it's sad but uplifting.
his definition of freedom is really good!!
incredibly enlightening and hopeful
Vice, I like your podcasts, but seriously why did you send this guy to talk to Pepe. The worst weed related questions for 40 minutes. OK we get it in the first few minutes what the idea is. It is a missed chance to use these 40 minutes, which could be a nice historical note from a great man (considering he is 79 and he will be out of his duty soon).
spot on with everything he says. very good, open, honest interview. I want to move to Uruguay now.
There are very few times in life we can listen to truly wise individuals, this is something that needs to be in classrooms.
What a great man and wise person... its amazing i never though this would be possible in the world...
I wish he was my grandfather :3
Note how he stops for a moment before he speaks,it is a sign of great wisdom. He thinks about what he is about to say, similar to Richard Feynman .
"a former revolutionary (some might call him a terrorist) who was shot six times, imprisoned for 14 years, tortured, and kept in solitary confinement for upward of three years, only to be released, renounce violence, enter politics, win election to the nation’s highest office" You know who else matches a similar description? Nelson Mandela
This guy reminds me of my grandpa so much he always tells me to slow down and think step by step
above and beyond my favorite video on YT
An extremely enlightened man, I hope that more powerful people begin to think the same way. -Peace
New fan from Australia.May God bless you
I've listen the whole 40 minutes of the video. He has some good message, I like his way of thinking.
I m from Panama,,for me, this guy, is one of the most greatest presidents of all times!
Great human being right there.
Very inspirational video. Thank you, Vice.
thanks for upload the full interview. Montevideo! Allá voy!

mokov 12 years of night is a movie based on what this man and friends went through, very sad but a must watch
The most inspiring man ive ever listened to. Wow!
Cannabis argument aside, Jose Mujica just has the right perspective on how to run a country. Some of his plainspoken charm may have been lost in translation but his points remain profound. We need more men like him in the world.
A lot lot respect for him in India. All leaders should be learn lesson for him
Disappointing interview Vice. Half the time was spending discussing the peripheral issue of drug legalization while this man could have offered much more about what motivates his life and politics.

I understand your point, but I believe the reason for the interview was because of the legalization of weed in urugay. Hence the heavy question regarding weed.
@rasaecnai
3 жыл бұрын
if at the time of the interview Uruguay just became the first country to fully legalize weed then the focus on weed is understandable, because from the context their country is in focus internationally because of that move. Pepe is actually able to eloquently explain the state's position on the matter. It was practical, direct and seems well thought out. They consider weed addiction on the same level of alcohol.
That guy is wise as fuck
What an incredibly likable man.
This man gives me hope for a better world. I got chills listening to him speak. I am a marijuana user but I have to say there were an excessive amount of questions about it.
I think the 3 legged dog, along with his beliefs and actions, just made this guy a saint. lol Adopt me!
Great video!
An old man that really deserves to be heard. Very nice interview
Such a soothing voice too
Grande PEPE sudamerica te admira!
he seem very humble and peacefully I like the guy.
RESPECT! from Singapore.
An absolute legend! This man is not only a good president, he is an enlightened being who sees the reality around him by seeking for the truth within himself. He should be the president of the WORLD and not only Uruguay. Full of love and compassion.
He is a very wise man who understands whats going on in this world.
This is fascinating.
Very kewl man,, great video
Veo que han cortado algunas partes cuando habla Pepe por ejemplo sobre: las multinacionales, la farmaceotica mundial Merck, el mayo francés, etc. ATENCIÓN!
This man is brilliant and compassionate, but also utterly practical.
such a beautiful soul, could you imagine if all our world leaders had this kind of wisdom
Excellent. Wise man. Very Personable. This has influenced me to support Uruguay in the World cup. Luis Suarez!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Respect to you from my heart sir
First time i see this WOW i got allot of respect for this big man luv him:)
I love the point he made about the people bitching about the registry in one sentence he took out twitter Facebook and the point about tattoos and piercings this guy is a genius
best best very good man
QUE ORGULLOSO ME SIENTO DE HABERLO VOTADO
i would love to listen to this as a podcast but because of it being subtitled only ill have to watch it later...
Great man.
_"my neurons are still fresh"_, That's an understatement Mister Mujica, you are more alert and more lucid than most of us. You have answered every question with an amazing clarity and details. May God grant you a very long life. The gentleman who conducted this amazing interview, you have done a good work, I just wish you didn't keep coming back to marijuana thing, one or two questions about that stuff would have sufficed.
This president is so cool and chill, he gives 90% of his money to charity and doeasn't live in a lavish home, more like a quiet old countryside home. I wish I had a president like him.
BEAUTIFUL VIDEO ... Big THANKS ... 8)
Fantastic leader. Great insights. Genuine sentiments. Impressive intellect.
a lot of wisdom in that man, very inspiring
Found myself in agreement with all of that. Master politician or simply speaking common sense? Not sure, but happy to have watched.
That's it i'm moving to Uruguay to chill !!
"Happiness is not wanting what you have but having what you want". José Mujica has everything!
Si soy dependiente no soy libre y sin libertad no puedo ser feliz Por eso es que la felicidad esta en la mente del ser humano porque sin este pensamiento es muy difícil ser feliz
I like this guy
damn hes got alot on his mind and deep stuff at that wish all presidents and other were like this world would be so much better :)
This guy is an amazing person.
a humble and wise man
Very smart and good man.
What a GREAT man!
This man is as wise as he is courteous. I aspire to be more like him.
world leaders can take a lesson from this man.
Great man
Everything that comes out of this man's mouth is rational and makes me have hope in humanity.
QUE GRANDE QUE GRANDE!!!!
*The presenter should ask more original questions. Only marijuana is on his mind. Pepe, we need more humble people like you in this world. I love your idea of freedom and your scepticism against and bewildered idea on materialism. I love you.*
There is a big mistake with the subtitles. When Mujica talks about the French may, towards the end of the 60s, you translate it as the Paris Commune, which was such a different thing, in such a different time.
Que Grande Pepe todo un filosofo, un pensador tremendo procer! Excelente entrevista..!
I love this man!
