    Got to slow it right down, remove all tension. Play on harmonics at first as they will allow to keep your hand and arm more relaxed. Just start very very slow and very regular and the instant you feel any tension, stop and reset. Discipline and patience and you will get there

    how come the cello also moves when I try to do vibrato? What am I doing wrong?

  • @MacPhantom

    @MacPhantom

    9 жыл бұрын

    When applying vibrato, move your left hand in the same direction as the string (that is, up and down), not from left to right. The best way to practice this is to position your thumb exactly below the finger you would like to make vibrato with. Therefore, vibrato is usually the easiest with the index finger (and the hardest with the pinky). Just one note: even if you do it correctly, the cello *might* still move, depending on the position of your left hand. If this is the case, try holding it more firmly between your legs.

    Emily Wong Vibrato is indeed more complicated than it looks. I still find myself struggling with it from time to time, and I've been playing the cello for 19 years now… Just keep practicing, and, very importantly: don't forget using vibrato! This might sound funny, but sometimes I am too concentrated on getting the left hand and the bow right that I forget about vibrato, particularly during short tones.

  • @Tykenolm

    +Emily Wong I realize this is probably REALLY late, but you're moving side to side instead of up and down the strings. I did this same thing until my teacher corrected it.

    I previously played the violin and my vibrato is in violin autopilot. I need to vibrato on a much larger scale. My cello has such a beautiful tone that I automatically start using vibrato without realizing it. I was gifted a beautiful cello and am finally playing music after floundering around for 2 months. Learning to tune my cello and practicing bowing helped me to finally play music. Now I am on my way !

    Well you can learn it but I'm afraid you wont do nothing with it. I'm playing cello for 3 years and I just learned how to do it, but my teacher teaches really slowly so maybe that can be the "problem". Short answer: In my opinion you can learn it whenever you want but you should ask your teacher about if you could use it unless you want to learn it but do nothing with it

    I need help with replacing cello strings. I am a life long clarinet player who had to give it up and started cello a year ago and I love it way more than I could have imagined. But the time came to replace my strings or so I thought. I ended up choosing D'Addario Helicore set and I don't like them not even a little and don't have enough experience to know why I don't like them or what I might like. I don't know why because I have only been playing for about a year. I loved what was on the cello when I bought it but I don't know what they were so I can't replace those same ones. The Helicore are hard to play, they don't respond well for me without force, the sound lags, it sounds dull and flat and I can't keep them in tune. The previous strings I rarely had to tune them and when I did they were tuned right on. With these I can't get a perfect tune, all the strings dance on the tuner and never stay green. I am wondering if these are for me experienced players? You can email me the answer peggy

    I prefer Jarger strings. I have the Jarger fortes on my first cello. They are a bit thicker than helicores but it brings out the lower tones quite nicely. I also use a rosin with gold flakes in it for the Jarger. The gold flakes help grab the string a bit more and gives it a richer tone. I actually just got a new cello that currently has helicores on it but I'm about to switch this one to Jarger as well.

    Irene Lee Perhaps more difficult in technique, but keep in mind that cello strings are much thicker and are painful to do vibrato on--or even push down for that matter. That is more strain on the fingertips.

    @@jaeyounglee5410 Unlike the violin, it required me to build more calluses on my fingers to play cello, because it really hurt my fingers in the beginning. My teacher's advice to fix the pain, "Suck it up." They are different instruments, but I found it easier to shift on a violin. 🤔

    I'm sooo tired of people telling that their instrument is the hardest and trying to show themselves as the most awesome musicians because 'they play an instrument which is so much harder than the others'... 😂😅😄 It's ridiculous... Instruments are different! There are things that are easier/harder.. but it's so annoying when someone finds a technique which might be harder on her/his instrument, so he/she tells it just to feel more superior... 👑😄😃
