Figaro is 30. Marcellina is his mother. So I expect her to be around late 40s to early 50s.

@AmericanEvita You need to think in the century that the libretto was written. In the 18th century, a 30 year-old woman was an old woman. The life expectancy was very short... So, according with that time, Susana must be 16, 18 years-old, Contessa 20, 25, and Marcellina 30, 35. Your vision of a "fat old pompous woman" is just that, your vision. Marcellina was Bartolo's maid, so she mustn't be that pompous or fat (only the richest were fat).

It's not really true that 18th century life expectancy was quite so short. On average, people probably did die at 30, but that takes into account a whole lotta infant mortality. Once people had reached age 10 or so, they were well set to reach 60 unless war or childbirth took them. (And of course war is mentioned in this opera. Childbirth was probably too ewwww to make the cut.) Marcellina is probably in her 50s.

true - at least in high social circles we know people lived long - Salieri Haydn Constanze Mozart - all of them lived well over 60 - just not Mozart himself!

I don't understand how they can sing in those dresses. they look so stiff and i know i wouldn't be able to sing that well in them.
