I remember in the early 90's (my teen years) I used to clean and repair audio cassette tapes. I made a tape cleaning, decrinkler and test player jig from an old tape player. It almost looked like a crude Reel to Reel player with extra parts, lol. It worked a treat.

Here's a good tip: If you don't wanna use a screwdriver to stick in the middle of the VHS tape to manually wind it, a toothpick works wonders! Learned that trick when I was young!😉👌

Maybe you could try putting the reels in a cassette shell you know for certain is good and then on the bottom of the tape reels, fill it in with pencil because the graphite will give it more slip and some light lubrication, just to rule out the possibility that there's too much friction in that particular shell, because tapes with issues have a lot less tolerance for friction in the shell

Hey mate! Love your videos. I’m in Australia and going to get a pro over here to clean my tapes. Just. A quick question. Since I see everyone online going on about how dangerous it is dealing with mould and having all the protective gear etc and notice that it appears it doesn’t worry you. I have pulled a cardboard box full of old tapes from my basement and most of them are full of mould. The ones that aren’t full of mould or have little mould I’ve successfully transferred them over with a throwaway vcr. So my question is do I need asap to get the box and tapes out of my house even if they are just sitting there in terms of the mould spreading or being hazardous? Thank you and love your videos

Hey mate! Yeah I am very careful now w the mould in terms of wearing protective gear. As for your stuff, I’d probably get on it asap and clean outside the house and wack a mask on and eye gear and stand up wind when you’re doing it. As for keeping in the basement, as long as it’s sealed up box wise or ziplocks then no harm but I’m no health inspector so that’s to your discretion. All the best mate!

Ever see tapes behave like that when not moldy? I have one that struggles to show unless fast forwarding or rewinding. Wondering if it was recorded on a super out of track VCR or if maybe a cleaning of the actual tape might help it. Will give it a go and see I guess. Use it as a learning experience on how to clean tapes.

Could be a dirty head or misaligned head?! I’d try in a few other VCR’s.

Hey mate, I'm wondering where to get that same tape cleaner and stuff. A lot of sites just say generic "electronic tape cleaner" and I've looked on ebay, but none of the stuff matches what I think would fit. But what do I know. I'm just hoping to find an affordable machine because I have a couple hundred or so VHS tapes (movies and TV shows) that I've had over 25 years since I was a child, and they're all incredibly moldy due to excessive humidity (one issue was we had no heating in our house for a few years, so humidity was bad during winter, but I'd rather not explain) and an embarrassing living situation for some years. Despite the tapes being stored in an entertainment center for a long time, tapes still got moldy, even ones in clamshell cases. I could do it without a cleaner, I've seen tutorials, but I don't trust myself not to mess things up. And an electronic cleaner like what you all have could help. Plus sending all those tapes in to get professionally cleaned would cost a fortune. I just can't bear the thought of parting with these tapes, I've had them all my life. 😭 I'm sorry for the long comment. It's just devastating when stuff you love is in bad shape, and you guys look like you know what you're doing.

Depends on the situation. Each tape is different. Isopropyl, contact cleaner or nothing, a cloth, all depends.

VHS Tapes was not the best Tapes of the World! It had several bugs. So Betamax Tapes and later (Betacam SP and so on) was better....Here we can see when it was clean, it is to old!
