I REALLY don't think that was an interpreter. It looks to me like the footage used was from some other interview. I think what happened was that they asked some questions by email, got answers back by email, and then got someone to read out the answers over a video of the director talking about something else.

@@cpt_nordbart In some contexts, there is no difference between the two, but in other contexts, there can be differences. Where I would see the main difference might be that a translation seeks to preserve the meaning most literally between X language and Y language, but an interpretation seeks to bring clarity/explanation to an unclear message (not necessarily between different languages).

Godzilla is a great series to look at for visual effects, because it represents almost a different lineage of effects philosophy from what we're used to in American films. it's 70 years of filmmakers using every trick in the book to make something small look huge with relatively limited resources, and I think there's a lot to learn from that.

Whoever was translating from Japanese, that's REALLY GOOD. They understand the candidness when it's there and localize that to an american way of speaking. Japanese people can be very VERY formal when talking to a camera on an interviewer, so when you translate that, it can sound very stiff. And sometimes people do not dare to translate even less formal speech to properly non formal English. Good job!
And they pulled it off with a $15 million dollar budget…. How??? This is a passion project by the team and it definitely shows! Absolute masterpiece of a movie and favorite Godzilla movie

Someone asked why the miniatures in the later Godzilla's didn't look as good as some of the early stuff and it was explained that when the early movies were done the buildings in Japan were were ten or 15 stores as Godzilla went on and and Japan under went such rapid growth and development that you were dealing with builds that were up to 100 plus stories so for Godzilla not to be dwarfed he had to get bigger which meant the scale of the miniatures got smaller and at a point you start loosing detail

It's definitely a guilty pleasure film especially if you're a fan of VFX and or movie scores. Godzilla '98 excelled in those two fields despite it's fumble with the script.

@@DanielWhitmer Well due to how the film did poorly in the box office with barely breaking even, it wuld make sense to still get a use out of the license. So using leftover ideas for the originally planned trilogy into the animated series. I'm still amused by the fact when Emmerich handed the Godzilla design to Toho exec's and they were flabbergasted into silence for a good few mins; And had to begrudgingly accept since there wasn't enough time to do a complete redesign. lol

gave birth to one of the best animated series imo, hope he is given another chance.
Oscar winning now. Much deserved. ❤️
I thought I had a fringe opinion but I'm glad so many people point out the Japanese to English interpreter. I've seen quite a few Japanese video game developers and directors give presentations with interpreters, and this one is on another level!
The 1998 Godzilla was one of my favorite movies growing up. I've watched it so many times. I'm glad it got shown here.
I'd love to see a Doctor Who special comparing the effects from Classic Who, 2005 Who and 2023 Who (Beep the Meep was awesome!)

Doctor Who is a treasure trove for this channel, they seriously need to cover it. From Beep the Meep to the Slitheen to wonky compositing in the Classic series how can you not talk about it.

@@WHNorthcoteBeep the Meep was definitely a combination of a puppet and costume for most of the episode, and then definitely 100 percent CGI after the twist. They didn't seem to have an evil version of the puppet. Looked fantastic because they had the puppet for reference, but the difference is striking.

Oh it's cool to see that there were more people mentioning exactly Doctor Who before I did (bigger the odds of the. doing it XD) I think the DVD releases of Classic Who that had CGI alterations would be gold for them to react and analyze (and dunk on, for most cases).
You guys should do a Godzilla Part 2 now that Minus One won an Oscar.
comeback here after minus one won an oscar. 15 mill budget . box office success 100 million . damn
Glad to see some respect for the 1998 Godzilla movie. I'm a big Godzilla fan and I was 8 when the 1998 movie came out and I enjoyed it and still enjoy it to this day. When I do marathons of Godzilla I do not leave it out. The effects are really great for the time and even though it's not the best adaptation of Godzilla at the end of the day it's still a great Giant Monster movie. This was peak Roland Emmerich. Also enjoyed Independence Day and Day after Tomorrow from him.
This was long over due, have been a Godzilla fan all my life and I love the dedication that the suit actors put into their performances, suits on fire, keeps acting, I am literally drowning, keeps on acting, cannot see and confronts another actor in a suit covered with real pyro technics and explosions keeps on acting. Long live the king of the monsters Godzilla ❤🙏
Great interview with the director here! Hope you take a deeper dive into the Godzilla Minus One vfx in another video. They were very impressive, especially considering the budget they had to work with
Definitely more Godzilla movie reactions are needed even the stunt work involved
I will always hold a special place in my heart for Godzilla '98. Glad to see it finally getting some love. (Pluto TV airs it all the time) 🤓
They need to do another one of these, there’s so many more movies that deserve to be analyzed
Godzilla Minus One was an incredible movie. I loved it so much. Great Godzilla design, Great story cant wait to see it again
Godzilla Minus One is definitely in my top 5 movies for Godzilla. The looks, the sound, the story, and the destruction were all just so well done. Legendary take notes please
Guys, I saw Godzilla Minus Zero last night. It is AMAZING and I do not exaggerate when I say it's not a typical monster movie - it's a truly great FILM, with great CHARACTERS and the movie is really a human story about people you CARE about - it's about Japan in the wake of WWII, loss, grief, pain, regret, and Godzilla is the representative of all of that. He's the lead's white whale to his Ahab. This is the ONLY Godzilla film where I actually cared what happened to the cast and was worried for the characters. And Godzilla is TERRIFYING in this one. It's nothing like the others, it's a good movie even if you didn't have him in it at all, and WITH him it's just amazing. It's the best Godzilla film EVER - no joke - and one of the best films I have seen in the last DECADE. Go see it. Really. In theaters, NOW, while it's still out.

The effects and how they were used make Godzilla minus one to be the best monster movie I have seen. it feels so real and the shoots are sometimes spectacular. So happy this movie exists.
For the peeps who don’t know who the two kaijus were in the beginning “Ultraman” was jet jaguar “Giant cricket” is megalon.
And then they won an Oscar
Holy shit HOLY SHIT! As a long time Godzilla fan, and having just come off the back of seeing the new movie in theaters; I can not describe how stoked I am too see this finally!
I live it when you guys look at all the old effects. It's truly humbling to see how far film making has come.
Showing the evolution of the effects of the movies over the years was awesome. Really puts into perspective how much work went into these films regardless of the era.
This is one of my fav episodes now, super fun to watch, love u guys
"Is that...Godzilla?" 8:20 "No sweetheart, it's just a frog with a thyroid problem."
The "CHARGE " Blender short would be awesome for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second Chronicles of Narnia movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight
Amazing how Godzilla: Minus One just won the Oscar for this.
2:26 Fun Fact: In 1954, Godzilla's eyes looked in different directions on purpose because you could only see one side of him at a time. There's only one or two shots where you look at him head on. One shot is on Odo Island at the beginning when he's coming over the hill and the other is during the destruction of Tokyo. Goji looks down at the camera right before using his atomic breath and you can clearly see his eyes are pointing down in different directions. Makes him look a little derpy.
The collab with the director was so cool! Hopefully you get more chances to do stuff like that in the future!
The cab-crushing looks so real because they did it for "real". They dropped several tons of steel plating on the cab. So you get the splashes and also something for the camera man and the rest of the VFX team to react to
Great movie. Glad they did it. Brings back memories of watching the older movies.
I love Godzilla from (1998) , love the story & can't wait to see Godzilla Minus One.
I really do appreciate when you guys don't just dunk on older effects but give them credit for what they were able to do with what they had at the time. It makes me want to see your reaction to some classic MMPR tv clips. Seeing the newest Godzilla design. I love it and feel like it is a return to a more classic design. Were it my call though, I would want to see the back fins just like 5-10% smaller.
It's pretty cool that you guys are now so known for the _Reacts_ videos that directors reach out to you, so you guys can speak with them 😂
So cool that you got to talk to the director of Godzilla -1.0! Gotta be one of my favorite movies!
Lots of fun! Thanks for doing this!
I am sooooo glad that you looked a little deeper into Emmerichs godzilla. It truly is amazing vfx work in that film, altho I have to say that to me the best looking shot is the one right after the military starts to shoot at godzilla after feeding her. Her turning around to see wtf and then bending down is absolutely flawless.
3:45 Peter. Top tier actor. Future Oscar winner 🥰
i saw it last week BEST GODZILLA MOVIE i have ever seen and vfx props to them that team was very small i read
You guys should react to the Japanese Gozilla movie, "Shin Godzilla". I was surprised of how good the CG looked in it.
I saw Godzilla Minus One 4 days ago, and I was floored. I did not ever expect a Godzilla movie to move me to tears. KotM got me a lil bit, but this one was like, *emotional* .
you know, watching godzilla vs megalon was a blast as a kid, something i still remember doing with my dad in a drafthouse theatre...absolutely a ridiculous film, nostalgia elevates it way up in my book.

It would honestly be the best thing, especially if they find out all the fun history with that shot, like how the DVD release has that scene listed as "Pretender to the Throne".
I thought it was cool the director genuinely wanted to talk shop with corridor crew you can tell he respected them and probably felt quite at home with them
I'm pretty sure those closeups at 11:30 are both highspeed puppet elements of the mechanical head by Patrick Tatopoulos.
