I know this isnt possible, but what if some sort of safety feature wasnt engaged and the steam catapult flung the airplane forward? Bad day for everyone

why did they do this? couldn't they have checked it before it had the engines and everything turned on?

They do check it before, then when the engines are turned on ready to take off they do a last check to make sure it's safe.
