The 'Brothers in Arms' album by Dire Straits is an absolute classic and was supermassive when it was released back in May 1985. It was number #1 in the US for several weeks, number #1 in Australia for a massive 34 weeks, went x14 times platinum in the UK, it was number the #1 album in some 14 countries at the time. It's one of the best selling albums of all time - raking up 30 million albums sold. In Australia alone, it went x17 times platinum. The Australian tour in 1986 ended at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Australia on 26 April 1986, where Dire Straits still holds the record for consecutive appearances at 21 nights.

My first thought when I saw this link was "I hope she has her tissues handy". I've known and loved this song from the day it was released, and although it was in regards to a specific conflict (the Falklands War), it applies to any an all conflicts the world over, and to all that serve! (and thanks for all that do!) It's a beautiful piece - Mark & co. brought all the emotion that the 'hell' of war can bring. Lest we forget. Peace & love.

Hi KSO, I have a little story I want to share. The first time I got the opportunity to visit an American military cemetery overseas was in the Philippines. I hailed down a taxi cab in front of my hotel and told him where to take me. I noticed he had a nice sounding stereo, so I asked if he could turn it up. He happened to be playing a CD by Dire Straits. The next track was "Brothers in Arms." That mournful guitar faded out just as we arrived at the memorial. I walked through the gates and immediately started walking among the crosses. Many of the graves are marked "Here Rests in Honored Glory a Comrade in Arms Known But to God." It turns out there are more than three thousand, seven hundred of the these unknowns. Even if their family or friends wanted to visit, they wouldn't have known which grave was which because the soldiers couldn't be identified. With that song playing in my head, it was one of the most sombering experiences of my life to visit such a place

All my life i was asking my father about the ww11.He never said a thing.Such an open man,a wonderful jolly man who loved chats and telling jokes, never wanted to talk about the war.He was a Gunnery Sergeant for the RAF.Flew on Lancaster Bombers. He came to me one day many years after, sat me down and told me everything about his time in the RAF,during ww11.I felt he was like confessing to me.He told me of a girlfriend,in Germany, friends that were killed the utter brutality and savageness of it all and of course the comradeship.First time a saw him cry and that made me cry.We talked about every detail from 11am till 02 am,the following day with only a break for something to eat.Three weeks after that he passed away.He knew he was dying and felt he had to tell me.Every time i hear a song about war, especially this one,i remember him.RIP Dad and thank you for all you did for me.You were a great man.

This is such a moving song. It was written during The Falklands War but is about all wars. It is written, according to Mark, from the point of view of a soldier lying dying on the battlefield. The first two verses are about his unit, his "brothers in arms" but in the third verse the soldier realises that everyone is his "brothers in arms", including the "enemy" combatants and he begins to understand the futility of war. It pays tribute to all veterans but it is strongly anti-war in sentiment.

Doubting you ever served for any cause that wasn't turned inward. This is the most distrspectful rant I've ever heard . You'd serve your fellows best if you just shut up. Those are 2 words I never let my kids say or have I ever said to them....or anyone. But they're needed now. Just shut up. You've no shame and saddest is you've no clue you should. As if you could. @@seelenwinter6662 This song isn't honouring war or the killing of people. Actually, it literally says in the song "We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms." It is honouring your fellow soldier as well as the 'enemy' soldier, and the unshackable bond that happens between these people when put in these unimaginably horrible situations. Whether you believe the war you fight is justified or not, is irrelevant to this song.

Imagine to be brothers in arms on the oceans where there is no escape from enemy fires, no shelter, no cover and the best that you can hope for is to be rescued from drowning or becoming sharkfood by the winning force.... That´s the fate of the navy members all over the world....So when ever you stand on a shore, please remember that the oceans are the largest graveyard of the unknown soldiers and say a little prayer. I do this every day. .....Thank you for sharing your emotions and please stay safe and healthy.......God bless you...

My Most Compassionate K.S.O., This song got to me. I was serving in the U.S. Navy when this song was released. I appreciate your thanks to your country's veterans. If you don't mind, I also dedicate this to all my brothers and sisters in arms. I've told you about my 2X great uncles, two who served as CBs (Construction Battalion) in the Pacific and another who took part in the Normandy invasion, D-Day. I also had a grandfather and great grandfather who served in WWI. My Great Grandpa Roy was actually gassed (Mustard Gas) in France. He suffered from ulcers due to the agent for the rest of his life. I don't know about Grandpa Charlie. He was a Wagoneer during the war. Whoever said "War Is Hell" was spot on. I pray for all in the military that they remain safe and for God to bless them with the knowledge that is needed during these troubled times. As long as there is hate, greed, and intolerance, war will continue to be a way of life for many. I agree with you stating that all soldiers in the world are "Brothers In Arms." In the NCIS episode "Call Of Silence," Charles Durning plays Ernie Yost, a retired Marine. In the episode, the character is a Medal of Honor recipient during his time on Iwo Jima. He is also racked with guilt over the death of his best friend. He blames himself for the death. In the end, it is found out that Ernie's friend had stepped on a land mine. The blast took both of his legs and was in severe pain. There was also a Japanese patrol walking close by. Since it was nighttime, his patrol was concealed by the darkness. Ernie's fellow soldiers convinced him to keep his friend quiet. Out of desparation, Ernie hit his friend with the butt of his pistol only to knock him out. Unfortunately, he hit him a little too hard and killed his friend. All this was revealed by Gibbs in an reenactment of the events by striking matches and using an elderly Japanese man. At the end, Gibbs and Ernie are at a sushi bar drinking Saki and talking. It also just so happens that the elderly Japanese man is a chef at the sushi bar. Ernie realizes the ruse perpetrated by Gibbs in order for getting the truth out. Ernie turns to the Japanese man and realizes that the man never took part in the defense of Iwo Jima. The gentleman confers with Ernie's statement, but then informs Ernie that he was also at Guadal Canal during the same time Ernie was there. The ending shows both Ernie and the elderly Japanese man toasting each as a sign of respect. This episode always gets to me, especially the ending. Two former enemies honoring each other. To all my brothers and sisters of the military. May God keep watch over you and I pray for a safe trip home. To you my Spiritual Sister. May the Lord also keep watch over you and your family. PS: Charles Durning did serve during WWII. He took part in D-Day landing on Omaha Beach during the first wave. He also was at the Battle of the Bulge. His medals include the Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts, meaning he was wounded in action three times.

As a 3rd generation British military vet, this means so much to so many of us, my grandfather was in North Africa during WW2, my father saw action during the Suez crisis, in Aden and Cyprus I went to Bosnia, the middle east, the Gulf 1 in 90/91, this has been played at my grandfather and fathers funeral , and when time comes I have left instructions for the same. This is the most haunting piece of guitar to cause a river to flow from my eyes every time I hear it, no matter where I am or what I'm doing.

Mark Knopfler was a true genius. Poetic lyrics like no other. He may not have had the Ed Sheeran type voice, but his guitar could sing better than anyone. He wasn't one of those whammy bar/ string scraper/ shredders who play a million notes per second, but his guitar work while technically brilliant was him singing through his fingers. Listen to Private Investigations.

My Dad served in WWII, landed on D-Day, was later wounded in action, was put in for the Purple Heart, but never claimed or received it. I used to pick his brain. When I was younger, he didn't tell much, restricted it to funny things he had seen. Later when he and I were older he related more and towards the end of his life, at 91 years of age, he related some of his deeper thoughts and emotions. I played this song for him once and watched him go quiet. At the end he wiped a small tear out of the corner of his eye, and just nodded. He inspired me to write many songs and poems. One of his and my favorite, poems goes something like this: APART Whose blasts they were we never knew that sent us to that fated spot while round about us loudly flew the terror of the shot. I came running first in fear, to flee the thundering din. He came running, too, to hide and quickly tumbled in. With mouths agape and eyes held wide We smiled a smile to show... our enemy we never know From different soils, by brotherly fear We crouched together yet alone. The shelling stopped, he nodded a grin, and jumped outside the war carved hole in which we hid. Someday, perhaps, we'll meet again across these rifle sites. No one knows how it all will end but in that night of thundering din we'd hidden there as friends. (c) 1984 WDW

This song receives no radio airplay. Even around Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Such a shame. This might be the most underrated song of the 1980's.

The thing that some forget that this is not a one sided song. It's an anti war song sharing their pain and suffering and that these things should be handled in another way instead of war.

One of the great songs of the 1980s from one of the great albums of the 1980s. I think you'd like "Ride Across The River", "The Man's Too Strong", "Your Latest Trick" and "Why Worry" from the same album, all sprinkled with similar fine guitar work.

I think I've teared up to this twice, now (before even KSO went),and when it was the closing theme to the UK programme 'Civvies' about a group of ex Paras (Parachute Regiment) trying to adapt to civilian life (and failing).

For full affect this song should be watched with the falklands war video its even more touching considering the song was written as a result of that war it occurred between Britain and Argentina when the Argentines invaded the falklands Islands I suggest you react to it again with that video it puts an even bigger perspective on this song

There was this documentary about the Battle of the Atlantic. And how those crews of destroyers who'd chase and sink German Submarines would would at first go "Yes, we GOT them!" but directly afterwards would shed a tear for the sailors who just died "Those poor guys!" There's no winners in a war, everybody loses.

For me the “Brothers In Arms” and “Love Over Gold” are Dire Straits two best albums period. Not only because of the musicianship of Mark Knopler but his best as a vocalist.

It's a very touching song and for me the best one of DS. Unfortunately it will never lose its actuality. How can people hate others peoples children. I will never understand or see the sense of war. We are all born on the same planet. We share this world. Our world. We have to be united. We are all from Earth.

I am 53 yo a music lover and i like to believe that i know some things about modern music. I am following 2 reactors here for some time now ( around one year i think) Over this amount of time i have requested/asked for a number of songs. I understand that my fav reactors are getting thousands of requests every day and its impossible to satisfy all of their fans. Thing is that personally i am not asking for a song to satisfy my ego or to listen to that particular song. I know the songs i have heard them a million times b4. I am asking for those songs because i know the reactors will like them and its a great opportunity for them to discover some new songs and with them all of you great people who love music like i do. With that being said and since we just listened to a song that will last for ever, i will make one more try and kindly ask for a reaction to the same song, this time from Mark's live performance at the Music For Montserrat, a benefit concert held on 15 September 1997 at the Royal Albert Hall to raise funds for the Caribbean island of Montserrat after a major volcanic eruption. The link is kzread.info/dash/bejne/hG2ZyqxylqXLabQ.html. TYVM and sorry if i bothered anyone.
