26:21 The thing that gets me the most about this episode is that he credits Shift Powers entirely. Doesn't even mention that he put his life on the line running out there as bait so Shifty could make that shot. And right at the end where Speirs tells him he's been the leader of Easy company; it just demonstrates that Lipton was just doing what he thought was his job. He had no intention of being some kind of hero or chasing after promotions. He was just doing what needed to be done. It speaks volumes for his character, it really does.
Winters always thought that Spiers placed himself to be the one to relieve Dyke. He wasn't where he was supposed to be. Spiers' run in real life was much farther than depicted. Genuine bad ass.
Also, that scene where Lipton called out Dike to Winters was superb. Winters had known Lipton for a long, long time, and knew Lipton’s character and integrity extremely well. He KNOWS how huge it is for Lipton to say those things about his CO, and he weighs it accordingly. The actors played those subtexts superbly.
Taco!! pumped you're back. Hope all is well and your health is good!

Not sure if somebody already wrote this but - that insane run that Speirs did through the German lines was even crazier in real life. It was something like twice as long (actually, I think it was even longer it's just been a while since I last read up on it) and under immense enemy fire. In fact, there was an even carzier movie moment in real life: Speirs connected with I company, giving them orders on where to go and warning them that he's coming round the other way (he's quoted to have said something like "don't fucking shoot my guys") and started to run back. Seconds later - the man Speirs spoke to got hit, just after conveying that order to his second. After some deliberation, the producers of the show decided to make this scene much shorter and less intense because they figured "nobody would believe it if we did it the way it actually went down".

Episode 7 is one of my favorites because all through 1-6 I loved Wahlberg's character. He is such an amazing leader, so unassuming but somehow still able to command the highest respect. One little thing about all of his interactions w/subordinates: he is never questioned, never given attitude, it's always "yeah you're right, sir, thanks" or something similar. He never gives a bad order, or even annoying superfluous ones. He is hands down one of the most dependable, rock-solid characters in all the stories I've read/watched/etc.
Awesome behind the scenes morsel: the actors were so immersed in their roles that off set one of the actors had a fish bone caught in his throat and instead of going to the real doctor at camp, he went to the actor playing the medic! The "medic" didn't hesitate and saved his life!
I can't say enough how great it is to know that you're okay; welcome back!

So good to see you back. You’re not done with BoB until to see and react to the accompanying HBO documentary “We Stand Alone Together,” with toms more interviews with way more of the men than were show at the end of Episode 10. The documentary gives lots more context, from the men themselves about the events of the miniseries. Their views on D-Day, looting, etc. plus tons of archival footage and pics and some of what they did postwar and their ongoing friendship during their later years. Re: the events of this episode including Toye and Guarnere losing their legs the documentary has Lipton, Malarkey, Babe and Guarnere himself taking at length about it. Highly recommend!
Welcome back. Another great reaction. Yeah. This one hits hard.

“Should we see if anyone is hit” “Yeah Malark that’s what they want, Krauts’ll try to draw us out in the open” *Joe Toye starts yelling in Pain* “I think that’s Joe!” And then when Guarnere is dragging Joe back to the Fox holes. Joe goes, “I need my HELMET! I need my Helmet!” “Forget it Joe!” And then the iconic/ heartbreaking scene where Lt. Buck drops his helmet after getting so shellshocked by seeing Toye and Guarnere with their legs blown off by artillery. BoB and the Pacific are so high quality mini series fuckjng love them so much

Apart from Winters (let’s face it, EVERYONE loves Winters, and for good reason), everyone seems to have a favorite…I don’t want to say “character,” but you know what I mean. For me, it’s Lipton. I wish I’d been half the NCO he was, during my career. He’s just the epitome of an excellent NCO.

Welcome back! You make some of the best and most insightful responses I have seen for Band of Brothers. One thought on Dike is that he was a guy with a good record (combat medals) but was going through some serious PTSD like Compton. The difference is that the men of Easy Company knew Compton and had sympathy for him. With Dike they didn’t have that knowledge so held him in much more contempt.

So wonderful to see you healthy and back! You're the best.
The window the sniper was in was not only smaller but a lot further away when Shifty made that shot using ONLY the iron sights of his M1! The distance Speirs had to run to meet up with the other company was also much further.

Speirs was a beast. About his charge. If you remember Speirs told Albert Blithe that he had to consider himself already dead. So for Speirs it wasn't I may die. It was simply this must be done. Yes he shot the POWs and he shot a drunk Sargent when he decided to point his locked and loaded weapon at Speirs in anger. It was ruled self defense.

The Breaking Point...Well, it's not just a clever name. When Winters tries going in against orders, then sends LT. Speirs to relieve Dike, he more than put his money where his mouth is what he said to Blithe. "Easily" one of my favorite moments of the series. That scene is stunning, every, single, time. Then when Buck's helmet hits the ground, it's as Earth shattering as the German artillery... Currahee ♠

i was in E/506th Reenacted back in the early 90's into the early 2000's spent alot of time with the real Easy Vets - So there is a BIG debate about LT. Dike and the attack on Foy and him being wounded many go with the Clancy story who said that he noticed Dike being wounded but there is no mention of him being hit during the attack. so per the old CO E/506th living history unit who has copies of all the E co & 506th reports and spent alot of time with all the vets - "they hated him (Dike). The only thing they didn't like in the series is that it didn't show the absolutely massive foxhole he had the Co HQ guys dig for him. "It was as big as a hotel". (heard Wild Bill talking about that) so Dike wasn't hit during the assault on Foy. A lot of people think he was due to the miniseries and some comments Clancy Lyall made (even though he never saw Dike during the assault). There’s absolutely no record of him being hit or mention in the morning report copies." Also for Speirs run through Foy to make contact with Item Co. which was down too about 22 troopers and they were shooting into Easy's positions in town so he want to tell them to stop shooting.
I am sorry to hear about your eye, I hope that it is all good now, I do not know what happened, but from what I can see, both your eyes look good.

I've given the full explanation so many times, it's nuts so I'll give the short version. Dike wasn't a coward or a bad officer. He'd been decorated multiple times for bravery and competence before taking over Easy. He just wasn't the right officer to lead the company, especially after Winters. He also didn't have a breakdown or freeze up during the attack on Foy. He'd actually been shot (possibly twice) and was going into shock. The show does him dirty because the show is based on a book which is in turn based on recollections of the men and the men didn't have a high opinion of Dike because he replaced a beloved officer, not because he was a coward or a bad officer. Speirs is also the GOAT. Served in WW2, Korea, and did extracurricular shit in 'Nam. No one else, save for maybe Winters, I'd want leading me into Hell. And yes, he did shoot one of his own men in self defense. And yes, he did kill those POWs in Normandy. He's admitted it himself. Many of the paratroopers did because they just couldn't take POWs due to the situation. Never officially order but it's what happened.

There seems to be a lot of different and contradictory takes on Dike, some supported by official record, others not. He clearly wasn't the total waste of space shown in the series if you just go by his record. That said, the idea that the dislike of him was based on him replacing Winters isn't realistic. Dike would have been Easy's commander for some time by Foy, and there had been a large turnover since the Winters days. He would have led the company through Bastogne. Any resentment of him replacing Winters would have long since vanished if he'd been perceived as doing a good job, especially since Winters had been promoted rather than 'done dirty' and was battalion XO. I personally suspect that just started him off on the wrong foot, and he didn't do much to improve many people's opinions.
@oboogie2
2 ай бұрын
Trying to take all accounts into perspective, I suspect Dike may have been a case where he was likely a good platoon leader (particularly given his medals and prior record), but maybe just wasn't up to the task of leading a company, particularly under the conditions of Bastogne. That doesn't mean he was a bad guy or a poor soldier, just that maybe leading Easy was beyond his scope at the time.
@cenotemirror
2 ай бұрын
@@oboogie2 That's certainly possible. It also could be the case that, like Buck Compton, he simply started to burn out under the trauma and stress and was no longer quite the soldier he'd been before.

I was in E/506th Reenacted and spent time with the real veterans of Easy including Maj Winters ,the unit has copies of all the paperwork including company AAR's/ the 506th regimental Journal ect... NONE of the paperwork mentions LT. being wounded. only Clancy Lyall said that he noticed Dike was bleeding , BUT he was nowhere near Dike during the attack. yes he had done good in other operations but at FOY he failed. Yes many of the troopers in Easy hated Dike. And with Speirs run through the town to meet up with I company which was down to about only 22 troopers , it was to tell them to shift there fire as they were shooting into Easy co. area of advance on the town.
@catherinelw9365

Dike was not a good combat leader. That is why Winters had him transferred and he was assigned a desk job and never served in combat again. Dike DID abandon his men during the heavy shelling. That is unforgivable.

Speirs to Blythe ep 3 " you have to accept the fact that you're already dead...."
Def should read the book man. It offers a lot of more accurate info that further answers reasons for things unfolding as they did. i.e. why Dike was they way he was and why he was placed with Easy to begin with.
@pedrovazquez5732
2 ай бұрын
23:08 I really do believe that this goes to show why Winters was such an effective leader at both tactical strategy and technical employment of doctrines and forces. As a leader you cant make decisions based on subjective thoughts or ideas. Hence why there's nobody to replace Dike. 101st has no other officers to spare and moving an office to another company or platoon simply because subjectively your troops don't think he can accomplish a task while it may be good reasoning its not enough to remove him and then place that burden elsewhere. This is why Winters went through with the decision, he allowed Dike the opportunity to accomplish his task. But once he starts to fail then Winters has an objective reason as to why Dike needs to be removed effective immediately. Its tough but Winters always does well at keeping his personal emotions at bay and makes decisions based on objective evidence and reasoning.
Let's Go0o0o00o!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU'RE BACK??? HOPE YOU'RE WELL HOMIE!
I would say that I appreciate how hard this must be for vets to watch but, I don't. I never needed to know this in my life because those that came before me did

There's a plethora of reasons in my opinion..given it's just an opinion I'm not an actual doctor...a femoral bleed ti the untrained eye may not seem as severe as an amputation so sometimes ppl don't even take it too serious..but you literally have a few mins to stop thst bleeding or the person is going to go into shock..with an amputation depending on the location tib fib or lower than mid thigh..ppl immediately go to a tourniquet..which when applies right..will stop most bleeding for an extended amount of time or at least until you can each a higher echelon of care ..there's more details then that..but I don't wanna get into the thick of it..there are jsut alot of variables at play honestly
