To those wondering why the owners don't intervene/help out: lots of vets prefer the owners stay back if the pet was highly stressed/aggressive because 1) vets are professionals who know how to handle any animal, and 2) vets would rather the pet direct its aggression towards them than towards their owners. My dad had a parrot that adored him for years (he got it as a hatchling, long before he even married my mom) until one day he brought it to a vet to get its wings clipped (parrot used to free roam in our backyard) and as my dad was holding the parrot the vet accidentally clipped some skin, drawing blood. From then on the parrot HATED my dad because it associated him with pain and trauma. Broke my dad's heart because he loved that bird but it would always shy away from him. Parrot still loved my mum, my sister and I, so it lived on happily with us. My dad just had to give it a wide birth and toss it treats from a distance.

never heard such a bs. vets at least on this side of the great ocean do the opposite. but talking about health care is nontheless a point of big divergence, regardless of for humans, or animals as it seems :D just replace the pet by a small child, ripped away from their parents. no one would say its OK to traumatize a child in this way, if the alternative is just to have their parents being near or holding a hand... animals are no different to small children, frightened, helpless, forced in an unknown environment with unfamiliar people who wanna do seemingly threatening stuff, and both (depending on age) lacking the capacity to comprehend or process/come to terms with whats going on .... so treating them differently is just again the human hybris to think animals as lesser instead of treating them the same way.

It was all about how to safely restrain a pet and letting the Vet get to various parts of an uncooperative patient, without getting maimed. How to move an angry animal, and humane use of restraints. • @Mayo-hd4wi

Medical neglect is 100% more abusive than restraints to get a check up. Many pets don’t get regular vet visits. And they should. They’re important for vaccines and check ups to hopefully help your pet live a comfortable life. There are necessary times when animals need to be stressed for their own well being. Same with children. Same with adults. Some discomfort to prevent a lot of discomfort is the way to go. Imagine if this cat had some kind heart problem. But they couldn’t take him to a vet because he was too agressive? What if that lead to him having a heart attack? Or suffering because we couldn’t let him be stressed for a bit. I’m assuming you’re young, because I don’t really think your brain is all there yet (not until 25!). Or at least I’m hoping your young. Because it scares me to think people are ignorant about these things. And believe me I’m ignorant about a lot too (don’t know what you don’t know!) I hope my comment hasn’t been too rude. I’m just very passionate about medical science, extending towards animals as well

Maybe for cats this frightened, they could somehow sanitize the room of scents from other animals? Also, maybe the day before, the vet could give the owner the towels and gloves for him to rub/embed his scent onto, then the vet & vet tech could use the towels & gloves the next day in the checkup? Also, what about some catnip after the exam, so the cat can associate something good with going to the vet?

On the other hand I once brought in a farm cat, semi- tame. All was good until trying to put in a cage, then it went crazy until I got to vet. I warned her how wild he was, had the big gloves and all ready, opened the cage and he calmly walked out and right up to the vet and purred. She looks at me “ya that’s some vicious animal you have there” 😂

My cat used to be like that when we went to the vet. He was a very strong and independent male who lived half his life on the street. Very affectionate and social cat but at the vet he turned into a dangerous monster. I remember the doctor and I carefully planning ahead each time in order to prevent the cat from hurting us while handling him. Lost him to kidney failure about a year ago and I miss him every day.

She is such a strong and independent female who started her owns business and was doing fine but after a while she couldn't pay taxes anymore and everything went south for her. She became homeless so we adopted her now she's doing alot better and she works a part time job at Wall Mart. She is very friendly, very social. Currently she's saving up for a car and it's going great.

But that might be because the times I've rushed her to the vet she's been attacked by other cats so she might of been in shock. She's sleeping next to me right now and she's not even flinching at the car meows so maybe she's better than I thought. Also I'm so sorry about your cat. I know how the loss of a pet can hurt you.

When a cats paws are sweating it’s usually an indication that they are under intense stress. In this case, this cats aggression is directly related to the level of fear he is experiencing. If his stress heightens much more, it can lead to self-soothing fear induced behaviors such as elimination or as he is already doing, physically attacking. Cats can die of a heart attack due to stress and it’s really not good for their kidneys or heart to be this stressed out. Consider asking a veterinarian for recommendations for calming the cat before his next visit. I’d hate to see him or any animal afraid for their life due to a routine veterinary visit.

Becca L.M. Head shaking is actually a distraction technique for cats that is taught in veterinary technology school. It helps distract the cat from whatever the doctor is doing by giving them something else to focus on. Why not give them a toy or treat? Those aren't strong enough distractions for aggressive cats, and we don't want to reward unwanted behavior.

Just because you can sedate doesn't mean you always should. That's how I know you're not a vet tech. A cat is temperamental whether or not you choose to sedate, the cat will be stressed while you're trying to inject it. From someone who has owned 6 kitties at once, & all manner of kitties since childhood (rescued ferals / adopted etc), had a good handful of these in my time, & let me just say this to those saying to give them pre-meds… the act of giving them those pre-meds is often far more distressing, than 5-10 minutes in the vets office, not to mention the aftermath of worrying about them being out of it, jumping & not landing properly (which, unless you’re carrying them like a baby, you can’t stop - especially with numerous cats to care for, difficult to keep them calm in an environment like that). My vet preferred to do house visits for those this distressed so they weren’t so uptight, & preferred listening to their heart when it was beating faster, easier to detect murmurs or issues. The vet nurses are AMAZING & are trained to deal with distressed animals. Try not to be embarrassed or upset with your furrbabies, they’re outside their comfort zone & just like us humans they get anxious too! I bet by the next day or even by the evening, this beautiful ginger boy forgave (& forgot !) everything after a hearty meal & lots of love! Well done to this vet practice, you did an amazing job xx

Don't feel bad. I worked at a vet for a year and I was a bather and kennel assistant. I had a cat literally jump out of the tub and bite my finger THROUGH the leather cat gloves and then run under the kennels to hide. It took at least three people to herd it out and catch it. Another cat bit my elbow during a bath. I got peed on and spit at. Those ladies were sooo chill haha obviously they had to be nice around you but back in treatment we'd be cussing and rolling our eyes and even sometimes running away from the pointy end 😂😂 You're not alone. @@jinxed402 I have a feeling you don't understand a dam thing about cats or working in a veterinary clinic. First of all, the cat was likely in there getting vaccinations or something, possibly worming or flea treatments as well, which is essential to make sure they're healthy, so he HAD to be in there. Second of all if a cat is pissed off in a clinic you're NEVER going to get it to calm down. Seriously, you can't talk down a cat, you can't just stroke them gently, once they're pissed off, they're pissed off. Thirdly this means that if you do have this case, the best option is to restrain it regardless of whether the cat likes it or not in order to get the whole ordeal with over as quickly as possible, what do you expect them to do? Break down into tears because it pissed itself? Seriously? Remaining calm is absolutely the best way to stay in control and proceed. Fourthly they have to take care of themselves, a single bite or scratch could lead to infection and complications for health, especially if say for example he has come in for treatment because he has some sort of disease, it's essential that vets are firm regardless of what the animal feels about it for their own safety as well. He's dam right that the veterinary nurses did a good job, the cat was clearly extremely stressed out and could well have been dangerous if handled incorrectly, but they remained calm, did the best they could to restrain and get the painful parts over with, and dealt with all its hissy fits in a well organised fashion. So, in respond to your ignorant rudeness, as you said. Fuck. Off.

This poor cat is terrified out of his mind. He’s not angry or aggressive, he’s in full on survival mode. Only way to deal with cats like this is to keep vet visits short and sweet - get in there, do what you need to do as quickly and as calmly as you can and then get him back home again ASAP. By doing so you might be able to reduce stress levels associated with the vets over time whereas this experience will just have reinforced for him that it’s a horrible place.

I firmly restrain my cat while the vet gets on with what he needs to do quickly, calmly and quietly. I specifically go to that particular vets practice because they’re so good with my cats.
