    280 meters up in the air..dang, just saw a Vestas picture of the Nacelle of this fellow mindbogling big. but Vestas also been in the game for very long time and just had 120 years anniversary, so back to 1898 that this danish company Vestas have its roots.. back then its was a blacksmith & hydralic company started by the "Hansen" family.. the Vestas name came later and where constructed from "VEstjysk STaalteknik A/S" This constructing company-names from parts of other, is quite normal.. same with another old danish company "LEGO".. that also seems to be a naming from the danish aspect of "Play well" = LEg GOdt. Looking forward to see the V236 in fulll

    What is the energy return on this massive beauty of offshore technology? I know in 2015, Siemens studied their wind turbines and calculated they returned all embodied energy with electricity in 4.5 to 5.5 months for onshore turbines and 9.5 to 10.5 months for their offshore wind turbines. I would love to build these gentle giants of peace for all our coastal cities around the world!

    Think China is already manufacturing 16MW wind turbines at Fujian province. China in 2021 generated 655 TWh from wind while Denmark did 1.75TWh or whole of Europe 187 TWh. Thus China needs bigger and more large wind turbines.

    Specs, please! How fast does the rotor turn? Does this use a transmission, or is it direct drive? Is the alternator grid tied, or does it use a frequency inverter?

  • @dang8249

    @dang8249

    3 жыл бұрын

    A typical geared wind turbine speeds up the rotation of the rotor with a gearbox to turn the generator. Then the AC produced is converted to DC, converted back to cleaned AC and into a transformer where the power is stepped up and sent to the grid. I would think this turbine will be the same as previous designs, only bigger.

  • @vincentrobinette1507

    @vincentrobinette1507

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@dang8249 If they use an inverter, the frequency coming from the alternator doesn't matter. They can maintain optimum pitch angle on the blades, and maintain optimum blade tip speed to wind speed ratio. That keeps them quiet, and yields maximum power from wind speed.

    @@vincentrobinette1507 yes that is correct. The generator is the standard 690 volts, that goes into a converter and right into a transformer. This transformer is in EU usually transforming to 20 kV to 35 kV depending on the country.

    Wind power is already not expected to be constantly producing. The largest part of the problem in Texas came from Fossil fuel and nuclear sources going offline. Maybe preparing for potential cold weather is a good idea. I suspect that turbines without gear boxes would be better at handling differences in temperatures though, but I don't know for sure.

I'm more familiar with port cranes and there customers is asking different lifetimes for cranes. The default lifespan is 25 years. Sometimes it's not sense to get longer lifespan for motors, gearboxes and bearings because steel structure rusts and gets cracked.
