Vespa LX 50 2t cleaning the carb and rejetting

Someone in the comments asked if I could do a video on cleaning the carb, so here it is. I also rejetted from 55 to 54 as the bike was four stroking a bit when it started. Sorry for the sound in the second bit.

Thank you so much! This is most comprehensive tutorial on carb disassembly. I didn't find idle jet diffuser as well so I think this is the design feature. Main jet diffuser sprang out of the place and I spent an hour finding it in the garden! I checked autochoke with multi tester for chain continuity and I suppose it works.

First, I think that plate restricts the flow of air to mean emission standards or something like that. Just another one of moped restrictions. No 100% sure. But I am sure that you should clean the idle jet because it is much more narrow than the main jet and is the reason for clogged carburettor 90% of the time.

The brass plate is indeed a restrictor. But for stock engine you can leave it in. Once you start fiddling with aftermarket exhaust or cylinder kit, you have to remove it and also the inlett knee of the airbox wich acts as restrictor, too

Hi I was wondering if you could tell me, the pipe with the air flow to allow suction for the fuel to flow through, what does it mean if it doesn't work (doesnt allow enough suction for fuel to flow)? Thanks

Hi. Sorry for the late reply. It probably means the petcock is done. They’re not too expensive though and very easy to replace. Just a jubilee clip really. Although it’s messy if you can’t drain the tank first.

  • @AlexanderVelkov1

Hi There, thanks for this - very good clip and very helpful. The plate you were wondering about at 2:35 seconds is actually the restrictor - it limits how much air can go inside the engine and therefore how much power it makes - necessary for people on learner licences. Piaggio usually combine this with a ring that limits how much the variator can close to achieve the 30mph limit effect. One question - is it normal for the scooter to smoke more after the clean? It took a while to start, so I'm guessing there is just a bit too much oil for some reason?

Hi Alexander, I've heard that about the brass plate before, but other people say that it directs air through the various vents in the carb. Jury's out for me. I've tried taking it out and I ended up with flat spots in the acceleration. I'm not sure it's normal for it to smoke more before a clean. Unless there's more fuel getting through, so it's running a bit rich.

Milos Lazarevic hi. Sometimes it takes a while for the float bowl to refill. You could try sucking on the vacuum hose (gently) and that will allow fuel to run into the float bowl. Make sure you’ve tightened everything up properly and all hoses and clamps are in place. If any air is getting in anywhere it could make the bike too lean and it will have trouble starting. When you’ve done that, as you’re starting the bike pump the throttle a bit. If all that fails, then give it another clean. As weird as it sounds, some dirt may have got in there. Good luck.

Please help..🙏My scoot is 2004 Derbi - piaggio 50cc et2 engine, yasuni r, malossi 2000 multivar, polini clutch with green springs, original big clutch spring, I have the white one also that came with the variator kit...17.5 naraku carb...still trying jets at 84 now, pilot is 34. I couldn’t get it over 49 miles an hour. Still with original airbox, even I have the polini open air. Tried rollers from 5g to 7.2. The only difference pretty much is the acceleration, heavier rollers drop mile or two in top speed. Malossi kevlar belt...

I believe the petrol tap which releases fuel down the petrol line is vacuum operated. So fuel should come out unless suction is being generated by the engine. Have you got the vacuum hose attached? Sometimes you have to turn it over quite a lot to fill up the float bowl again before it will start.

You should be able to see oil in that line. Had someone run it dry do you know? Was there oil in there when you got it. There’s a little pump which should force the oil through. If that’s not working then just run it on pre mix.

Hello!! At the beginning of the disassembly you remove two electrical connectors, one is from the automatic starter that goes to the part with the carburettor cap, the other could you tell me what it is for? Is it from the temperature probe or what is its function? When trying to disassemble my motorcycle I have seen that I do not have the quick connector of that cable and that it was loose, specifically I am missing the part of the connector that goes to the motorcycle wiring, this cable has two different colors and I do not know in which position to connect it to the cable that comes from the carb since it has two cables of the same color ... could you help me?

  • @willoliphant2617

One is for the autochoke and the other is for a heater which goes to the carb. I assume this is to warm the fuel/air before it goes into the cylinder, but to be honest I was never convinced that it was working. You could always add in some quick connectors. It would probably help you out. I bought a pack of ten once from ebay, but it was a long time ago.
