This WAS Canada's only full size electric railroad. Thank you for sharing this.

This was also Canada’s only electrified freight railway

CN's Montreal commuter line was electric.
Wow- what awesome footage and thanks for sharing! My cousin got to wire up these juicers during his tenure at GMD in the early '80s and was his favorite loco outright. Always wanted to make the trek up there to do some railfanning but always thought they'd be around forever. . . . So sad when the wires came down and the units later "deconstructed",save for 6001. My cousin even remarked that they weren't even broken in when they were scrapped and were meant to last 40+ years before a thorough shopping. It's sad either way. It's too bad the units could've found a second life with the GE's over at Black Mesa & Lake Powell since they run 50kV overhead. Kinda wondered about that. . . .
Great Video! I wished BC kept these electric locomotives running and expanded their use throughout the province! It would be nice to have a 'European' style train system here! 😁👍

Lack of foresight is synonymous with BC’s government. See for instance the ripped up arbutus line, now imagine commuter rail to UBC…exactly

@@VanIsleNuckFan Very true and let us not forget the stupidity of the federal gov with the Avro Arrow project 🤦♂️
Thank you for these videos, my absolute favorite locomotives and stretch of Canadian railroad by far. I was alive when these were operating still, what id give to have this experience. I used to imagine the wildlife these engineers probably saw every day they went to work, so that brief clip of the bear + cubs was perfect. Also, who else noticed the caboose with insulators & pantograph on that work train? Monitoring line voltage? Beyond cool. Still waiting for the day I can get 3 or 4 of these in HO scale. Maybe one day...
Nice video of a system that only lasted 17 years, and gave BCRail a massive debt they could never overcome. I looked at this as Canada’s Milwaukee Road version of the “Great Mistake.” Still fun to watch though!

good comparison
Awesome footage, thanks for posting
Electric from coast to coast! Alas, we first need to expand beyond the Northeast Corridor before oil goes back through the roof.
Incredible.
Amazing 🔥🔥🔥great trains and video 👍🏼
Wow! Awesome!
Awesome video! Is there a part 2 to this?
GFC6s are probably my favorite locomotive i wish is could have seen them run :(

I ran them lots they were junk.
There were actually 7 GF6C units built, not 6. The 6-count is a strangely prevalent bit of misinformation on the history of these locos, which I've seen perpetuated in more than a few places.
There's one GMD GF6C that hasn't been scrapped. It's 6001. It's around at the railway and forestry museum in Prince George British Columbia

They were all in Tacoma WA for a time awaiting the scrappers torch. Thankfully one got saved.
Very Cool
The Tumbler Ridge rail operation was all first class components. Do to politics it finally was stopped. Economics did enter into the picture. There is still a treasure trove of coal at that site. It has now started up again using conventional diesel locomotives on that stretch of rail.

Due to politics the entire operation was created. The BC Govt funded the entire RR branch and town of Tumbler Ridge. It was world economics that curtailed operations here, not politics.
It looks a lot different now.
Do you still have this video? I remember watching it as a kid just once and then it got stolen when my house got broken into.
RIP the electric BC Rail line
The highest and lowest numbers are shown, at 6:22 and 6:46.
Bring back the legendary railroad known as BC Rail
50kv overhead!

Only 7 of these ever existed. Only one exists today. And they worked in an area that was hard to get to. Very hard to find footage of these running.
Sadly, no.
Wonder how many bigfoot were watching this train go by..
BC Rail locomotives are owned by Canadian National :(
