People keep saying he ripped this guy off or that guy off, it's not his own material, etc. But the thing is, this is ventriloquism. There is a standard set of tricks that you perform to verify your talent and skill. So throwing your voice into a suitcase/box/offstage or making it seem like your mic is out of sync or drinking water while talking or arguing with your puppet very briskly back and forth are all things that all ventriloquists do. It is not easy to come up with an original display of skill in this profession.

I love how this comment doesnt acknowledge any of the big, more recognizable things that this guy stole from Dunham and Conti, and just lists off all the generic stuff that any ventriloquist would do. Smh...

Lee Marion Just because Jeff Dunham came to promience 1st in the USA doesn't mean Paul Zerdin ripped him off just means he got noticed publicy before him and btw I love Jeff but it's ventriloquism of course some material is gonna be borrowed by others and because we aren't them we have no idea who thought of it first so enjoy it for what it is fun

+LaftyTafty17 He literally copied the same gags from at least two other ventriloquists. It wasn't just a similar type of humor common to ventriloquism. He actually used the exact same set up and punch-lines as two other well known ventriloquists. You shouldn't make excuses for dishonest entertainers.

There is something I don't understand. Paul Zerdin is far to be a beginner. He has performed on many stages, he has played in different TV shows, and also won a few contests. As I guess (but maybe I'm wrong) that there aren't thousands of professional ventriloquists, and if really he has copied his jokes, his acts, and his puppets of some of them, how does it happen that none hasn't protested before he becomes the big winner of America's got talent in 2015?

  • @MsJubjubbird

I think ventriloquism just has those staple jokes that everyone uses. Comedy is much more restricted when you have a puppet because you can't do the "life stories" stuff that most stand-ups do.

It's common for comedians to steal material from other comedians. That's been going on since the beginning of comedy. So while a lot of you are complaining about Paul stealing from Jeff...Jeff stole stuff from Ronn. Ronn's Row, Row, Row your boat is a long time exercise from ventriloquists. Nina has a mostly original act because of her gift in ad libbing. Terry Fator is an impressionist Ventriloquist, so his also becomes an original, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to find another that did the same thing.

I understand ventriloquism is a very hard thing to do, but this man does the same acts over and over and occasionally adds in a joke that is CLEARLY someone else's *Cough cough* Peanut's signature moves and tones that Jeff created to give his puppet a real character... Not to mention all his characters sound extremely similar.. the more i see him perform the more i think he wasn't exactly the best choice to win America's got talent... It's a shame because he's a good ventriloquist.

Paul Zerdin, although a capable ventriloquist has no original material... The first half was blatantly Jeff Dunham with the hair zoom thing and the Second Half was blatantly Nina Conti with the forcing an audience member to dance with the mask. Sure he was funny, but it wasn't him being funny. Those kinds of people are the worst, people who steal jokes to form their act.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, same sounds & same mannerisms, who knows maybe they got their ideas from an early puppet, but one needs to use something else cuz it's too weird
