Vertical Vs. Horizontal Studio Monitors (Can They Be Flipped?) | ADAM Audio
Can I flip my speakers on their sides? We get that question a lot... ADAM Audio Product Manger, Stephan Mauer describes in detail the differences between vertically-oriented studio monitors & horizontally-oriented studio monitors... and whether or not the two are interchangeable in a studio setting. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your monitors, please leave them in the comments below 👇
The ADAM Audio T Series: www.adam-audio.com/en/t-series/
The ADAM Audio AX Series: www.adam-audio.com/en/ax-series/
The ADAM Audio S Series: www.adam-audio.com/en/s-series/
ADAM Audio was founded in March 1999 in Berlin. Since then the company has been developing, manufacturing and distributing loudspeakers in the field of Professional Audio.
The development of the X-ART (eXtended Accelerating Ribbon Technology) tweeter based on the 1960’s invention of the Air Motion Transformer by Oskar Heil was largely responsible for the company’s founding. Producing sound not with a piston-like diaphragm as is done in most of the loudspeakers that are on the market, but using a pleated diaphragm that is capable of moving the air 4 times faster than the folds themselves are moving was the appealing idea behind it all. The achieved results were intriguing and gave ample reason for moving forward.

While i've known this forever, it amazes me how many pro engineers still do not understand this simple concept of monitor setup. This is a Great video that illustrates the issue very well. I own the ADAM S3H's and really love them!! I initially had them mounted a bit high, and had to point them downward to get proper Mid/Tweet alignment while seated at my desk, but I finally reconfigured some things so that they were lower, and could sit level with good alignment.

At the moment I choose to use the adam audio sp-5 headphones and i cannot say enough how serious these headphones are . Hands down they are the top of the top shelf headphones I ever heard doing extremely intensive comparisons. Delivering clarity at its best , diving way down into the low frequency audio range ,and for hours of non stop listen i am still able to make the very best accurate eq decisions with no ear fatigue at all. and the best part is i don't need to position them to get that sweetspot. dead on every time. Good explanation, about the A77X having the woofers aside the tweeter, I also have asked myself the same question. A possible explanation I can think of is the A77X are indeed mid-field monitors and so they are designed to be further away than smaller A5X or so, and at bigger distances the comb filter effect derived from the drivers not being in the same vertical plane can perhaps be smaller. We have had three monitors in the studio with the same driver structure (woofer aside the tweeter), the A77X , the Focal Twins and the two way PMC Twotwo 6, of which the manufacturer says literally in their web: "...their ability to operate in either the vertical or horizontal orientations without compromising stereo imaging or tonal accuracy." By the way, I have sometimes worked with both the A77Xs and Focal Twins put vertically on their side and have been really happy with their sound, at least in the sweet spot.

Agree with everything he says including that ultimately it comes down to the user. I've used my A7x pair in standing position for 10 years. Recently my right speaker developed rattle and it wasn't loose screws or a blown speaker. When I placed it on its side the noise went away. Now both my monitors are on their side and strangely I like the stereo spread better for my treated space. I also use my setup for production and not mixing so this new setup doesn't affect me there. As long as it doesn't hurt the speaker, I'm happy to keep this new orientation.

Such wasted potential. A7xs have been professionally engineered for the best quality sound but you aren't going to hear their full potential unless they are placed vertically as the engineers intended. ... Rather just repair the rattle then place them vertically as the engineer intended

@Damian Chiliński Hi Damian typically it is better than having them sideways, we would just suggest a way to angle them down towards you still, since 2-way monitors use the woofer to cover much of the mid-range detail as well which isn't as directional as the tweeter, but you don't want that too much over your head either. Good question and we hope this helps! Also hope you're enjoying the A77Xs 👊

@ADAM Audio hi there, I see sooo many hip-hop/trap producers and engineers putting their monitors horizontal, even though they are designed to be upright. Specifically the Yamaha HS series, is where I see this the most. All the science points to that being wrong.... but there must be a reason so many people do it? I can't find a conclusive answer anywhere, and was wondering if you had an opinion or any info on this. thanks for your time

  • @ADAMAudioBerlin

Hi Alkalyne Beats, it really depends on the setup you're using. We at ADAM Audio also developed special speakers like the A77X that are designed to be placed horizontally. We guess that some producers just like the looks of placing their speakers horizontally, even though there might be a loss of playback quality.

A useful, though probably sort of difficult, topic to cover would be odd shaped spaces. For instance, many of us are in a bedroom sized room, but we can close it off or we can leave the doors open, making the actual space for the pressure waves to propagate through the whole house or apartment. In my case, I'm in a bedroom that opens into the apartment on the rear left. And, the middle of the back wall opens into a bathroom which in turn opens into a large closet. So, there's the option of having a significant chunk of the rear wall that is three times more distant. On either side of that are slightly less than door width walls. Some people may have doors on both side walls at the back, which means not really any rear corners, and what amounts to 'adjustable angle deflectors' instead. And there's no way to put in a corner trap there when there's no corner. Are there are any sort of general guidelines on those types of scenarios. Is it better to allow the pressure out into the overall space? Or does that just complicate things even worse? It would seem naively that it would allow for much greater dispersion of low frequency pressure, even if the space outside of the studio room is much more resonant. I'll be measuring mine as I add treatments of course, and that's the final arbiter, but I was just interested if there's any thoughts on this kind of thing.

It works fabulously well, i own the a77x as well. You gotta keep the tweeters at rear level also dont forget to keep the respective monitors at their correct place with the mid range drivers( the outer woofers) placed at the bottom and the bass woofers ( the inner ones) placed at the top. Speaker B should be on the left side while Speaker A on the right. I was so lost since i wanted to do this a year back when i bought them but there was no information about them regarding mounting vertically on the internet present the only 2 people i came across was on twitter who had posted picture with vertical mounting so i just copied them and started using the monitors like that for almost 3 months( only god helped me ) but later on when i bought a room correcting software i realised the placement was off since the correction software wasnt working properly with that placement thats when i got in touch with adam personally wrote a mail to them and explained what i wanted to do and then they provided me the correct monitor placement and the info and thats when i realised i had them placed wrong all along. God help those people working in the studios with the wrong placements lol

Hi Selle! You are right. The speaker is not built to be a center speaker. For LCR setups we recommend using the S-Series instead. Our S3H studio monitor can be used as a LCR-speaker for instance.

Despite what Adam Audio says, I would say you will be just fine using the A77Xs also this way. Don't even bother whether it say LEFT or RIGHT on the box, just get 5 of the same A77Xs -- all five "LEFT" or all five "RIGHT." Or else go with these passive ones: www.svsound.com/products/ultra-center#

I bought some used A8X speakers recently... I heard them in a work environment for an entire summer and was thoroughly impressed by the fact that at any volume, the mixes held up... They sounded better than any other speaker that I have ever heard... I assumed that the "X" meant that they could be placed either horizontal or vertical without any serious degradation at either orientation... Is that not the case?

I am a bit confused now. I am no sound engineer so I just read manuals and apply them. The A7X manual says you can use the speakers either vertically or horizontally and they have diagrams that show the correct positioning of the loudspeakers in each case. The video suggests that a horizontal setup can be problematic. Is a7x special or should I ignore the manual and stick with vertical setup ?

  • @ADAMAudioBerlin

    @ADAMAudioBerlin

    2 жыл бұрын

Hi Baher! We recommend using vertical speakers vertically, due to the waveguide. It is built to widen the sweet spot and avoid reflections from the desk and the ceiling. You can of course use it horizontally, but with more reflections and a smaller sweet spot. In that case, there is a certain way to do it, which you can see in the manual. I hope that helped. All the best, Daniel.

Hi Matt, technically yes that would be fine if you needed to do that, however since 2-way woofers extend up to the midrange frequencies, you would be also missing some directional midrange information as well if the woofer was above your head, unless you have them angled down towards you.

We don't suggest using the A77X vertically due to the points made in this video. The sweet-spot would shrink significantly since that model doesn't not allow for tweeter rotation. However, if you do end up flipping them, make sure that, since the A77X is a 2.5 way, the mid-range woofer isn't above your head.

This is not entirely correct. If you have speakers with conventional round tweeters on a shelf, and especially a bookshelf, and they are not angled inwards as they normally are when placed on stands but facing you flat on and the tweeter is on axis with your ear, mounting them horizontally will not change the distance from any of the drivers to your ears at all. They are simply revolving 90 degrees around the tweeter axis on the same plane and the distance from the drivers to your ears remains constant. In practice, however, unless you only have one speaker and are listening in mono, it is impossible for both tweeters to be exactly on axis with your ears. More important than speaker orientation and its effect on phase is that the sound you hear is determined mostly by the acoustics of the room, where you listen in it and where the speakers are placed in it. Moving around and away from the normal sweet spot position even by tiny amounts can result in quite noticeable changes in the sound balance throughout the frequency spectrum. I am convinced that phase effects caused by orientation are insignificant and it is other factors that are more important. I even used to have a set of bookshelf speakers ( B&W DM5s) which had their tweeters connected out of phase with the bass unit. Mounting speakers horizontally can definitely work but as a general rule the tweeters should be towards the inside rather than the outside because of the greater directionality of high frequency sound. You need the tweeters to be firing as directly as possible towards your ears. Changing their orientation so that the woofers are nearer to room boundaries or corners can also boost the bass, which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you want. It is not a good idea to mount speakers horizontally if they have a waveguide designed to spread the high frequencies sideways, or have ribbon or heil effect drivers which have a horizontal dispersion pattern unless, of course, you can remount the tweeters 90 degrees, which with some models is possible. You can also mount speakers upside down if that helps position the tweeter more on axis with your ears.
