The DJI R Vertical Camera mount for their RS2, RS3, & RS3 Pro gimbals is a game changer for filming high definition vertical video. It allows you to use all of the DJI gimbals features (unlike flashlight mode), while keeping from overworking your Ronin motors due to bad vertical balancing using an L-Bracket or Camera Cage.

Many thanks for the video Calin that’s exactly what I was looking for. Currently all my video work is for social media and all my clients want everything vertical. Until now I have been using a Zhiyun Weebill with an L bracket and the stabilization gave a lot of problems. I wanted to upgrade to a gimbal that would allow me to record vertically in the same way as I would horizontally. I just ordered a Ronin R3S and this adapter that you have presented to us. I'm already excited to try it 🎥😉🤙🏻

Thanks, very helpful. But I've got just one question: why buy a vertical mount instead of using a cage? Hope to get an answer ♥
@robsmolinski649
2 ай бұрын
May I ask how do you use a cage for vertical ? A cage is typically landscape. Or do you put the hand grip thing on top of the cage? And the top handle in the battery side ?
I wonder if this will solve my issue with the eye piece hitting the SC2 gimbal. I have a huge tamron 15-30 2.8 and I have to slide the camera all the way back to balace regularly. I cant double tap mode and get to vertical mode because the roll up hits the eye piece. Tried a bunch of counter weights etc. nothing works.

I don’t believe that it works on the SC2 from what it lists on the website. Your best bet might be looking into the RS3 Mini
I have a problem in balancing A7 iv with Sigma 35mm 1.4 on DJI RS 3 gimbal. Would this vertical mount fix the balancing issue as the lens is heavy.

normally rs3 can take upto 3kg setup .. what about in vertical mode how much could it take ?
@calincharles
Жыл бұрын
unfortunately it doesn't look like DJI has anything on their website answering that. Also, I don't have a camera heavy enough to max out my RS3 Pro weight capacity. Definitely would be something to explore in a future video though.
What about using a cage on the camera, and screwing it on the side? Is this better solution and worth it?
@calincharles
Жыл бұрын
A cage has the same issue as an L-Bracket. Your balance will be naturally off. IMO I think this will strain your gimbal motors more. You can definitely feel the difference balancing with a cage/L-Bracket vs this R vertical mount. I’d go with the Mount personally or buy the DJI RS3 Mini which has a built in vertical setup you can switch to.

Bro there is option called vertical mode in gimbal I’m pretty sure you know that what is the different? Coz I always mount the camera same horizontally and switch to vertical mode but I can’t shoot steady and stabilize my footage?
@calincharles
Жыл бұрын
Yeah I demonstrated flashlight mode (vertical mode) in the video if you watched. The downside is you can’t control the camera to the same degree. Like you have no control of the joystick. But it’s a totally great option if you don’t want to buy the vertical Mount or buy the RS3 mini that just dropped which has a way to do what this Mount does. Just depends on how much you shoot vertical. I do a ton, which makes this Mount worth it for me. But maybe not for everyone

Will the DJI ronin R vertical mount work on the ronin rsc2?
@calincharles

I don’t believe so. It’s not listed as a comparable option. If you do end up upgrading, I’d look at the RS3 Mini as it has vertical mode built in without the need of the Mount
What’s the difference between using the vertical mount VS using the portrait mood with the gimbal
@calincharles
5 ай бұрын
honestly it just gives you more control. when you're in portrait mode, you don't have control of the joystick, you have to hold it in a kind of awkward way, etc... Using the vertical mount you basically get the full experience of using it normally, except in vertical video.
If you have a cage for your camera, then you don’t need an additional accessory. Simply turn the cage vertically and continue working without extra investments.
@calincharles

This is literally the same thing as an L-bracket, which I talk about how bad the center of balance is. As someone who shot a TON of short-form videos for clients last year, this will make your life more difficult than using the vertical mount.
@dlcworld
5 ай бұрын
@@calincharles you are absolutely right. In my case I used Dji RS2 + Nikon Z6 in the cage. As for me balance was ideal. The main advantage of this scheme that I’m talking about is that it allows you to very quickly change the setup from horizontal to vertical and back. We're talking about speed here. If you shoot in vertical format all the time, it is better to use a Dji product.

Just did some searching through forums, and from what I’ve gathered there doesn’t seem to be a way to attach raven-eye when using the vertical mount unless you attach it to a hotshoe, but I haven’t heard if this is tested. It appears you can use raveneye in portrait mode, so I would assume if there’s a way to Mount it, it would also work with the vertical mount

@@calincharles Yeah true! I've seen some videoes that the Rs3 mini collapse when doing a little bit to wide movement with it.
Easier solution for all gimbals…Put your camera in a cage and connect the quick release plate to the cage. Done.
@calincharles
Жыл бұрын
That is a solution and I used it for years. The balance isn’t as good, I can guarantee that. I’ve done it both ways now and I’m confident the R Mount will put less strain on the motors, even with “excellent” balance readings. But at the end of the day, everyone should do what they’d like. I recommend this option.
@broadwayphotovideo
Жыл бұрын
@@calincharles there’s no such thing as “balance isn’t as good”. Either it is balanced or it isn’t. It’s a heavier payload but if it’s nowhere near the gimbal’s max payload like with my ronin-s, it doesn’t matter. I didn’t want to mess with using workarounds for vertical video, so I bought a dji rs3 mini which has a vertical mount system.
@calincharles
Жыл бұрын
@@broadwayphotovideo I'd disagree personally just because of weight distribution of the object you're balancing depending on how you're balancing it. But a valid point and you may be right, it's just what my tactile experience tells me while going through the process of balancing in different ways. Good choice with the RS3 Mini. I want to check it out sometime to see what the difference is.
If your camera is mounted on cage, you can just mount cage in vertical mode. EZ PZ no need to buy the mount.
@calincharles
5 ай бұрын
Same issue as the L-Bracket. It’s an awkward point of balance on the camera body. It works, I’ve done it. But if you do a lot of vertical video, I wouldn’t recommend it as it will work the motors harder
Why wouldn't you just shoot normal landscape in 4k which has a vertical resolution of 2160px? You only need 1920 vertical for social phone media.
@calincharles
Жыл бұрын
Well think of it this way, if you’re shooting landscape and moving around a lot, you a) need to be far enough back so when you crop in you’re not too close to your subject, and b) need to mentally try and figure out your composition has most cameras don’t have markers you can project to see where the 1080x1920 section would be that you’d be using. Filming vertical allows you to compose in body, be close to your subject, and honestly just create much better vertical work. I’ve seen people use cropped in 4k landscape footage repurposed for phone and 99% of the time it looks awful and 100% of the time, you can tell they ripped it from landscape. For still videos like this one for instance, I 100% would say shooting landscape and cropping is acceptable and you’re not needing to compose, have dynamic moving shots, etc…
