I'm just at the beginning watching the video and I already can see what a fantastic video you made, very informative and very well explained, thanks for sharing
Yet another fantastic video! Thanks Derek!
Best tutorial I have seen for these petzl descenders. Thank you

Always get a lot of great information form your videos.
Thanks for the video. Great info.
Great - really clear and well explained
Top quality video, fantastic advice about not using a maillon to connect to the stop, I literally just put a big thick maillon on mine thinking yeah thatl be great, then tried what you said about it popping the front plate off and wow it is soooo easy to pop that thing with a maillon, stuck a dmm ultra O on there instead 😅

Glad the video helped. Petzl instructs to not use a maillon as a connector in their manual, but they just communicate this with pictures, and presume everyone will read it. There was a high profile fatality in 2003 that is attributed to using a maillon on a Petzl Simple bobbin. Definitely something to be avoided.
I don't know if other cavers do this, but I like doing a quick lock-off by putting a counter-clockwise twist in the bight of rope before putting it over top of the bobbin. It seems far more secure and only slightly slower then the standard quick lock-off method. It makes it to where the rope weight below you actually helps secure the lock off. I also use this lock-off method with racks that have hyperbars (with racks I put the rope going down the pit on the inside of the twist via a clockwise twist).
Great video!

Derek Bristol You're doing great job with your videos. They are very interesting, professional and helpful. Keep it up! And greetings from Polish cavers!
Awesome video Derek! Simple and packed with great info. When changing the Bobbins and reattaching the nuts, will a Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242 be sufficient?
Hey. Great channel, great movies. I have one question, I noticed that you do not use any security for SIMPLE, is it a standard technique in the US? In Poland, we use PETZL Shunt to protect against uncontrolled descent. Lately, this technique has been discussed in the environment as not entirely safe. How does it look like to rewind a roll through a point? Do you also apply the "two points" principle? I apologize for my not very good English I hope that what I wrote is quite understandable.

For recreational single rope technique a backup device such as a Shunt above the rappel device, or an auto block below the device is rarely used. For ascending we always maintain two points of contact with the rope or rigging, but not when it comes to the descender. Redundancy has its merits in some situations, but can also add weight and complexity. It's a balance, but we generally rely on one rope, one master connection point, one harness, one locking carabiner and one descender - though each of these critical devices is very robust.
I always put the freno the other way around such that the rope is further away from my body. The friction is the same in my opinion

I know a few other people that do likewise. The Petzl instructions have it oriented towards the caver, but I would agree that orienting it away from you probably works about the same. There are some pros and cons regarding what that friction spur can clip itself to accidentally.
amazing video.....but i do wana know your thoughts on new stop desigen....ofc when/if you get yourself one....

Orka DRLJAČA What new device are you talking about? Maybe provide a link. SRTE seem to be out of production and I haven’t tried the Kong Indy Evo Plus or Pirata, but may check them out.

@@DerekBristol Search for "Petzl Stop" on FB and see the photos from the ISPO China trade show that look more like a Petzl ID. All news so far has only been from this one source.

I see now that Petzl has shown a prototype, but not yet announced a release date. I will be sure to get one once they're available and conduct a review. It appears to have a stainless steel upper bobbin, which would be an improvement. I can't tell from the photos how well the new handle functions. A mini rack is good, easy and safe.
Hey David, What mount did you use to get that shot where your going down (2:33) Is it just a simple selfie stick attached or is it more complex then that. Thanks Kynan
I'm still not 100% sure how to use the hole. I guess to rappel free hand by pulling on the stopping handle with a "breaking" biner. The guy at 2:30 doesnt have that and he's not holding the handle. Only on a stupid wet 9mm rope I was sliding that fast. BTW I occasionally put the rope in the other way and it still provides enough friction to lets say slow down a log falling down the tree. It goes out through a weak spot on the top tho. A biner should do the trick. I've never used a breaking biner and I use the thing for ten years. 😀 You learn something every now and then
Hello, I'm new to climbing and I'm about to buy some new gear. Will a bobbin Descender slide up the rope when I'm climbing upwards?
@DerekBristol
3 жыл бұрын
Definitely not. There are a variety of devices used for self-belay including the GriGri, CT RollNLock, etc., but not bobbins. Most of these devices are not designed for self-belay though so there are risks and I'd seek advice from someone with experience.

@@DerekBristol ok thanks!
Can these be used for sport climbing rappels? instead of the ATC? taking into account you will only be rappelling of one strand instead of two.
@DerekBristol
Жыл бұрын
Could be used for climbing but not the best option. They are bigger, heavier, and less versatile than something like an ATC.
great info but the speed of talk requires constant replay.

Cut your fluoride intake and get some iodine 😀
Simple has no handle; use a THICK control biner
Stop is overpriced
