Max Verstappen explained the obscene gesture directed at a Ferrari fan during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Emilia Romagna, an incident that quickly went viral. The Dutch Red Bull driver, known for his competitive nature, was involved in a curious exchange with a tifosi who initially insulted him, but later publicly apologized.
The incident occurred while Verstappen was celebrating taking pole position at Imola. In the midst of the euphoria, he noticed someone in the stands making obscene gestures at him. Without a second thought, Verstappen responded in kind, showing his middle finger to the fan.
"It's great; everyone here goes with Ferrari, and of course I have a funny story with one of these tifosi," Verstappen commented with a smile. "A lot of people clap when you go into the pits, but there was one guy who was making gestures at me and stuff, so I took my finger out. Then he was already clapping for me - he learned his lesson!".
Verstappen reflected on the incident, highlighting the passion of the Italian fans: "It's easy not to be nice to drivers, but I can play that too; maybe he noticed. Here generally the fans are very passionate." The fan in question, identified as Walrico, later appeared on social media to offer a public apology to Verstappen.
