The origin of the toponym derives from the Latin adjective *verna*, which can be translated as "indigenous" or "of the place".
Thanks to the reduced Saracen threat after the battle of the year 1016, a first settlement at the marine port of Vernazza was populated during the 11th century, due to the arrival of inhabitants of the settlements on the heights around the sanctuary of Our Lady of Reggio.
The first documented news of Vernazza, as the first castrum of the Cinque Terre, dates back to an act of 1080, in which the castrum Vernatio is mentioned as a maritime base of the Obertenghi, a powerful dynasty of Frankish origin...;
...the Obertenghi were also lords of Vernazza in the 11th and 12th centuries and most likely used its natural landing place as a naval base both to protect the Levante coast from the raids of the Saracens and to support the commercial exchanges of the territory.
It was the marquises themselves who built a first sighting and defense post in 1056.
With the increase in commercial traffic and the development of the navy, Vernazza was within the expansive interests of the Republic of Genoa, which intended to make it one of its coastal bases for the commercial, political and above all territorial conquest of the Ligurian Levant.
The 13th century saw the settlement of new feudal lords of the village, first the Da Passano and then, from 1211, the Fieschi. In 1254 Nicolò Fieschi tried to....................................
The Pixar 2021 computer-animated film Luca took inspiration from one of these Cinque Terre towns!

    Thank you so much Dear Lawsonartzy! Out of all the Cinque Terre towns, I think I liked Vernazza the most... I don't know why, perhaps because of its large avenues and the port, compared to others, and the atmosphere there was super cosy and full of tourists at the end of August. Lovely lovely period and lovely town for sure. A shame I couldn't film anything as that area is Drone-Forbidden for everyeone ... and it's completely illegal to fly there :/ But stunning place

There were three times the population of the town on the streets and beaches from tourists. The panoramic view at the castle of Vernazza was awesome. The "Brief intro" and music are beautiful as usual.Thanks for this magnificent tour of Vernazza.

He stopped and seemed to be looking ahead -- either dreading the distance he still had to go, or watching enviously the young man climbing so effortlessly ahead of him -- or both. 55:17 - 58:00 now that's some serious exploring! In early seventies I really wandered through so many villages in Italy,France since I had no money. I'd take naps on harbour low walls sleep in the sun and a couple hours LA free er people would put change on my chest just enough for a peroni or two. I did that for about eight months till I got to London got a job a flat hung out on the road again till the money was gone found myself in Tunesia hanging out with the locals. Great two year vagabond.

    Thank you for sharing this memory here Jeff... incredible to think of all that and how you were able to travel for... 2 years (!) like this. For many living such an adventure would be something they can only dream about, some others could write a book about such an experience.. I, for myself, would have liked to live such an experience though, I lived something very very similiar in my 20s when I was living in Russia in the same mostly conditions... those are the memories that will always stick with us and never leave us... in a way, shaping who we are in the years to come. @@StillWanderer In those days a vagabonding man which I surely was the people made it possible. Some small villages took me under they're wings to feed fill with they're local wines and beers even making me honorary mayor for the night full of festivties and prancing they'er daughters to me and when they announced to neighboring villages I was American and I heard all the liberation stories. It was why I went to see and feel, museums I cared not for. I slept on more park benches than any man alive not to mention cemetaries, they were the quitist,lol. I found a nice niche by saving American girls who were in two's, three's and four's being harassed by energetic young ones boys who only saw American girls in movies. I was able since I wasn't a student to help bridge the language barriers between them showing young girls that they are a energetic bunch of harmless guys which many times in the end we would all party together. Oh no, I'm italian but lived in Russia, as a student, but as a penniless student for some time at university) I can't imagine what you experience though... living like that, even in cemeteries. Incredible, you should write some notes or diary about it all or some notes about the memories you still have of that adventure. I don't know and I cannot say if the country today would be the same as it was with you years ago, Many many things changed, mentality as well I suppose... I cannot say if it was better before or not, people are still people everywhere, good and bad. But hospitality is a cultural thing so... it changes with time and with eras I suppose. Fazliddin it's very difficult to reach by car..and inside it's impossible to drive. I strongly suggest to take train from La Spezia and there are many parking spaces yherr

    My friend Avery, nice to see you as always. I don't know personally but of course there must be many I guess. Especially in bigger cities. I was looking on Facebook and there are actually quite a few

    @@StillWanderer I always visit during off-season. Swimming is never part of my itinerary. Exploring off the beaten path is more my style. I would appreciate more videos of the same places when the focus is not on summer fun. Inc. Amalfi Coast videos. When I was in Positano it poured for 10 days. The kids playing in Spiagge Grande and Furore weren't helpful. Hikes around Montepertuso, places to explore when the weather isn't perfect are idea.

    @@RuthAllison Oh Ruth, I also love off-season, as you can see the majority of the videos are of towns off-season and many people don't like them... But here I was during summer to show a bit of a "crowdied" town, from time to time. But 80% of the videos are off-season as I like them more as well. I shall try again on Amalfi coast in this way, thanks for the tip
