Vermicomposting With The Worm Factory 360

A short video showing our new vermi-composting setup, the Worm factory 360. This video covers setup of the system and installation of the red wiggler composting worms. We should be able to dispose of up to a pound of scraps per day and harvest a full tray of worm castings on about a monthly basis with this!

These are great worm bins, mine are 10 years old and I'm happy with them. Over the years, I learned that more bedding to food gets the best results. I use a mixture of Peat, Cardboard, Egg Crates and Dolomite Lime in addition to coffee and green waste. The pumice and mineral dust is grit for the worm's gizzard, sometimes I add a little azomite for the same purpose. The coir is good stuff but hard to find where I live, peat is everywhere but remains wet and favors pot worms. Printer paper mats down into a mess of yuck, Ii try to avoid using very much paper. Sometimes I grow extra lettuce to feed my worms LOL

thank you for the advice, mine gets very wet and heavy, I use shredded junk mail, I will try more egg cartons and cardboard and perhaps i need to change the food/bedding mix, (more brown bedding). I also have a old electric spice grinder that I use for dried egg shells. Coir, I found in the pet store, its used for bedding for hamsters and mice I think. I started with 2000 worms, probably have 3- 4000 now, the problem is, I have run out of names for them, I am just calling the small ones Junior.

Fruit flies? = 100% too much food, and probably not buried. Springtails are normal and good, some kinds of mites are normal and good, both could be introduced from leaf litter and those are the good ones usually. Worms crawling out? = probably too much food and it’s heating up; too much moisture and worms can’t breathe; not enough moisture and worms can’t breathe; ph is off; something is not right in the environment. Big grub looking maggots are black soldier fly larvae and tho not necessarily bad(especially if you own chickens) they can take over and are definitely an indication of too much food. Proper bedding environment is probably the most important part of the equation, I have the best luck with shredded cardboard mixed with goat manure/straw. I only feed my worms when I have something to feed them, but I do give them treats of single ingredient amendments like kelp meal, crab meal, bat guano, fish bone meal, etc, whatever I have on hand at the time I think of it. Otherwise they get the manure. Any “worm food” that get put in needs to be broken down by bacteria 1st, so surface area is very important, shred or chop the foods. Don’t feed “food” again until everything is gone. Let the “food” pile up in another bin, let it get all moldy and nasty, that’s what you are waiting for anyways. Oh, and if you add a handful of “food”, then add 2 or even 3 handfuls of bedding, that’s one point that is never made on a lot of worm videos. You must keep adding bedding.

Tidwell hey, I think that if you freeze your food before giving it to your worms, it might help with the fruit fly problem. I’m not actually completely sure why freezing it helps, but I used to do worms and I’m going to start next month and whenever I froze my food I didn’t get many fruit flies. Hope this could help a little :)

@@user-ei7xy3gm6t Freezing breaks down the nutrients, making it more digestible. It also helps to combat any smells. Always thoroughly defrost before feeding to your worms, at room temperature. Worms have no teeth! Always remember to finely dice food, or roughly chop up in a food processor or blender before bagging and freezing. Add pure coffee grounds and tea leaves for nitrogen.

Cool demonstration. If You plan on ordering worms or setting up a new bin in the future. It is best to start your worm bin. 1 week before the worms arrive. A piece of fruit or half a banana peel should be added at this time. The microbiology will establish it self within 1 weeks time. Its just better for the worms to adjust quickly. Also a hand full of your own cold compost or a hand full of top soil spread out is great form of grit to help the worms digestive system.

Anybody who can’t effectively use the worm factory 360 is probably feeding too much, or maybe a moisture issue(too much/lack of). These contraptions make vermicomposting so easy. I’ve had 2 going for several years. It’s a small system so it needs to be balanced as far as amount of food and moisture level. As was said in another comment- more bedding than food. Then you can increase feeding as the population grows. FYI, worms can survive on just the bedding so don’t feel like you are starving them. You also can’t expect to give 3 lbs of food to 1lb of worms every week, they CAN eat UP TO half their body weight a day, doesn’t mean they always do, they need time to process the food. Also, They don’t physically eat the food we give them, bacteria’s break it down and the worms eat the bacteria’s. Once you have a good understanding of how a worm bin actually works, you will find the 360 is a really good and convenient one.

Not sure if it was the worms I bought off of Amazon (Nature's Good Guys 2100 worms) but I split them up in 2 different Worm Factory 360s and I did like the instruction say and how you demonstrated but I got a ton of fruit flies and mites as well as spring tails. So I basically added dried cardboard, paper and leaves to cover bedding to keep the fruit flies out and I was afraid of opening the lid too often because of the fruit flies but today I took both bins outside to let out all the fruit flies and stirred up the bedding and I didn't find 1 worm. Maybe 20-30 escaped the first 2 days I added them and never saw any escapees after the dry layer of stuff I added to discourage fruit flies. Did the mites kill my worms? Where did the mites come from I kept both bins in a spare bathroom since I live in Florida and I read 90 degrees will kill them so I kept it inside to avoid killing the worms and now they are dead or they vanished mysteriously. I doubt I had 2100 worms as they claimed but still even if there were a few hundred I was surprised I couldn't find 1 live worm or even hardened dead worms.
