Venus Williams - 7 Grand Slam Championship Points

Venus Williams is generally regarded as one of the all-time greats of women's tennis along with younger sister Serena Williams. Her seven Grand Slam singles titles are tied for 12th on the all-time list, and 8th on the Open Era list, more than any other active female player except Serena.

The people you are discussing is her sister, I mean the one who knows her better than anyone. And perhaps you have to consider that Venus might have won Wimbledon 2003 final as the match went three set even though she was injured. And AO 2003 final could have gone either way too.

I wouldn't say CutterHistorical is exaggerating. If you count Grand Slam finals alone, Venus has been in 16 to date (which is nuts in and of itself). She's won 7 and lost 9. Of those 9 finals lost, SEVEN were at the hands of Serena - the greatest player to ever live (fight me on that if you want). She lost her first appearance to Martina Hingis ('97 US Open) and her last appearance to Garbiñe Muguruza ('17 Wimbledon) which is rather poetic. If you gave her the same conversion percentage of ~71% against ANY other player for the 7 finals in which she did NOT face Serena and applied it to the 7 finals in which she lost to Serena, you could project 5 more wins. I see her having won 13 slams, if Serena hadn't been dominant for so long. The logic is taken with a grain of salt, however. You could apply a "Serena Factor" to a few top players from the past 15 years. I just think it's silly to think Venus wouldn't have won more than 3 additional slams, when 5 of those losses (finals from '02-'03) were when she was clearly the next-most dominant player on tour. All I'm saying is it's feasible.

The original point I was arguing for was "if only Serena wasn't so dominant, she would have 12-15 Grand Slams." In that context, my arguments are valid. I'm literally discussing what the possibilities could be, and more so would be, had Serena not been dominant. I agree, however. It isn't reality, and it isn't what happened. Facts are facts, and Venus "only" won 7 GS. The original point was hypothetical; therefore, my analysis was hypothetical. I even countered my argument by mentioning a "Serena factor." You've listed alternate analogies, so clearly you understand the point and the argument. You're taking my arguments out of context.

Quote from an article Venus hadn't simply had an excellent tennis season in 2000. She had forced the game to take an evolutionary leap. From that point on, you had to be longer, stronger and faster than ever before to win a major title. Graf wasn't enough of any of those things, not anymore. Seeing the future hurtling at her, she had retired the previous year at age 30. Former World No. 1 Martina Hingis, who had defeated Venus in the U.S. Open semifinals the previous year, was an astonishingly clever player, but that didn't matter anymore. Venus was clever too -- more so than she would ever be given credit for -- and she was also so much more than that. Hingis' days of winning major singles championships were over. She was 19, born the same year as Venus. Venus won everything in sight the next season as well. As a result, the WTA tour would change dramatically over the next couple of years. Never again would a male player dare to describe the women's tour as a bunch of "lazy, fat pigs," as 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek had done.

Apparently yet another nationalistic article by the infamously corrupt US media. In 2001 Venus 1) won only 6 of 12 tournaments played 2) lost 16 16 against Hingis at the AO 3) lost 46 46 against #25 Barbara Schett in the 1st round of the FO 4) ended the year as #3 in the WTA rankings. And to compare Venus, a player with a 75.2 % career match winning record to Golden Slammer Steffi with a 89.3 % record is a travesty. US arrogance in spades. Simply disgusting.

To me Serena dominated in an era populated by non descript and very average Eastern Europeans. Skinny girls who were just blown off court by Serenas muscles. Serena would have been a success in the 80's and 90's but no way would she have gpt 20+ slams. Maybe 10 maximum.

I remember there was a feeling of “oh. fuck.” When Venus won Wimbledon and the US Open in 2000. You can feel the other players were intimidated to play against all that power! Let’s not forget that had it not been Venus on the other side of the net that year, it would’ve been a PHENOMENAL season for Lindsay with winning three of the four slams and defending her Wimbledon title from 1999. Venus and Lindsay, a still-unpolished Serena, and Capriati the following year lay the groundwork for the five to seven year reign of “Big Babe” tennis.

@@carrerau7138 From what I heard and read the Williams sisters were extremely isolated and did not mingle or socialize with the other tennis players on the tour. They were extremely cocky and bitter towards other women on the tour as though they had a chip on their shoulder. And it wasn't just a few women who didn't like them ... it was almost everybody. Of course if you ask the Williams sisters they will just blame everything on racism. Just because your black doesn't mean you can't be a bad person. In my opinion alot of this attitude was inherited from their Dad who was an exploiting asshole.

Raphael Basile because people always compare Venus to Serena but I'm pretty sure if it was Hingis or Sharapova's video he would give more credit to that whereas they have less GS than Venus.

She is extremely one dimensional. She never won the Australian Open or the French Open. She was so reluctant to get help and change for forehand and work on her second serve. She should retire. She is making a fool of herself now.
