Still my favorite game of all time. The ambience in this game made it for me. This one in particular made me feel so isolated. Surrounded by enemies. One false move or sound and I woulda been a dead man.

An underrated part of the atmosphere is the color palette. MGS1 is overwhelmingly icey blue, sickly green, black, and white. You can see what I mean right in the video. I think the colors are meant to remind you of a naval Combat Information Center, and I think it is no coincidence that a submarine CIC is the first interior space we witness in the intro. It is emphasizing the theme of a digital military era.

No game for me will ever have the intense ambiance that this games has.

Looking at PS1 games Im still amazed how they squeezed soo much detail out of PS1. Like they used quite a bit of tricks to make it possible. Like even that vent grid is made out of polygons not a single texture. The ammout of different textures per level and special effects like sparx flying, shattered glass. There really is no other game on Ps1 that has this level of polish.

The gas room and the vent sound effect are spooky as hell. But in general all MGS also has some weird creepy shits to them

Only this game and Tomb Raider had this level of ambiance.

Metal Gear has some of the best music in gaming. You can really feel Kojimas passions for cinema and music come through when you play. Franchise has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid. The sounds and the visuals are burned into my brain.

PLEASE, if you ever get the chance, capture some ambience from the early Splinter Cell games ... They have some very atmospheric locations and very people have attempted to cover them.
