-- High crit rate moves determine their rate by dividing base speed by 64

I love how the game developers designed Venemoth to be the only Pokémon that has more type-changes than Castform. Like, it’s cool how they based Arceus off of this moth

I think Sludge Bomb was heavily underrated here. It's an easy trap to fall into because of the lack of Super-Effective coverage, but Poison does have pretty strong neutral coverage. Thanks to STAB it would have 135 BP before Janine, which beats out even Pink Bow + Return, and it hits everything you were attacking with Return/Swift for neutral damage. Add the 30% poison chance, and it's likely that it would've improved ranges on Pokémon like Umbreon and Arcanine, and probably done more damage than Psychic to Gyarados and Charizard. Great videos man! I've been watching for a fair while, but don't typically comment on stuff much. It has been great to see how much you've improved in terms of gameplay over the year, in ways I never would've even thought about myself. Here's to a wonderful 20231

I agree here. While special attack is higher than normal attack its still a 90 base power stab. It doesn't necessarily have to be used but Scott didn't even pick up the TM here. It could have been kept as an option.

You forget that Venomoth is a Grass/psychic type so there is no STAB from Sludge bomb. You'd be better off with return because of the obvious STAB bonus due to Venomoths Normal/Ghost typing.

Big Veno fan. I was going to write the same comment, so I'll just jump on the bandwagon here. I'll also add that the chance to poison probably won't interfere with Sleep Powder since you out-speed and put to sleep those most dangerous targets like Charizard before spamming damage anyway. Hopefully if/when Scott does a replay without evolution, he uses Sludge Bomb and gives Venomoth a fair shake. I think it'd at least be able to sneak into A tier.

As a matter of fact, you can even calculate easily if Sludge Bomb is better than Psychic. It is 1.5x stronger (the STAB-multiplier exactly), so if Venomoths SpAtk is less than 1.5x the Atk stat, Sludge Bomb is stronger. Only the opponents defensive stats have to be estimated then.

Random thought: sludge bomb is neutrally effective against most pokemon you use return against. It will also do more damage. After STAB, it's 135 base power compared to 102 for return with perfect happiness. This might turn some 4 hits into 3 hits.

Really great video! I actually really love Venonat and Venomoth a lot. I really started liking Venonat during a run of Soulsilver where I only used Pokemon that I got off of the Pokewalker, and since then it always was incredibly cute to me. Not to mention Venomoth starts getting extremely fun to use from Gen IV onward. Tinted Lens is awesome, Quiver Dance is awesome, Roost is awesome etc. So many amazing pick-ups. Since I'm also a Yugioh fan, I tend to like naming my Venomoth's PUV for "Perfectly Ultimate Venomoth". It not only sounds awesome but also is just a cool iconic old Yugioh card. One minor optimization thing that I'm honestly not really sure how much time it saves, but with Psychic and HP Ice, Sludge Bomb actually hits everything you want to hit with Return harder. It's not really that important and I think mostly it might make the 2HKO on Umbreon guaranteed with Poison Barb (or even PRZCUREBERRY) and maaaybe 3 hits the Snorlax? Honestly though its not a big deal but I thought I would mention it. You still did great. Thanks for the year of awesome and amazing content!

scott, you might want to start using a damage calculator. neutral sludge bomb is stronger than neutral psychic on a target with equal defenses; even a low-damage-range sludge bomb is stronger than a high-damage-range psychic. even though venomoth's special attack is higher than its attack, same-type attack bonus does a lot, and it's venomoth's strongest move. having it over swift or return would have allowed for better damage ranges.

Cannot wait for Venomoth to tackle Hoenn next and meet its competitor Armaldo! Thoughts: Venomoth is not nearly as great as Gen 1, since it doesn't get Confusion from the start. Relying on Tackle + Swift is pretty slow going early game. I think Sludge Bomb might be more useful than the standard Return for Venomoth. Sludge Bomb has higher base power than Return, even with Whitney's Badge in Johto section. Plus, you can cut the trip for Pink Bow in favor of Poison Barb. Sure, it might not be great for Jasmine and Koga, but I think Sludge Bomb might be useful as soon as you get it. You can brute force your way against Jasmine with Sleep Powder and Koga with Psychic spam, even against Forretress. I don't know if the power difference is noticeable for Umbreon and Arcanine with Poison Barb Sludge Bomb.

Sludge Bomb could have really been the star of the playthrough. Venomoth being a Poison/Poison types means you got that double STAB right off the bat. Then of course there's the programing error which caused all of Venomoth's STAB attacks to do an extra 50% damage which would then become the inspiration for abilities in generation 3 and was pretty much Adaptability before it was even a thing.

Someone needs to make a ROM hack where Venomoth changes types in every battle to reflect its true majesty. If I had any coding abilities I’d make it but I can’t even manage a Hello World, let alone that!

If you had used Disable you could get free Tackles in the early section. Fascinating solo run, not all the way through yet I will edit it once done. Happy New Year Scott. THANKS SHAWN! Also yeah it would seem that advice was taken even before I got to see it myself. Hmm... yeah the work all of the people who helped out with the output is nothing short of impressive. I must say 2023's output of FRLG is going to be interesting considering that some will benefit from having some new moves available and others will suffer not having bubble beam or a Mimic that can copy moves. But yeah as mentioned in a previous comment, Round 2 is impossible for a large number of Pokémon to do solo on the basis you cannot use items. Even at level 100 with rest strats you will get walled or crushed by the sheer power Blue's team has at his disposal. He will always have: Alakazam, Heracross, and Tyranitar the strongest Rock type in gen 3. The only other variable depending on who you replaced, he will have Exeggutor, Gyarados, and or Arcanine which are absent in the starter he chooses. All of which are at the lowest 72 and 75 for the starter. R2 Blue has to date the strongest team composition for any rival you can rematch with what is available to the respective games. It is somewhat a blessing that they aren't holding any items.

Hey Scott, I have been bingeing your channel for about a month now and loving every bit of it. You put so much work and love into your process and you've got a great personality to boot! I just wanted to put a forgotten pokemon in your mind that I really loved as a kid but haven't seen since generation 3. Relicanth, the ancient fish pokemon, that non evolving ancient fish helped me absolutely dismantle pieces of the elite four along side the help of my trusty tropius and super cool shedinja. I imagine a solo challenge for it would be pretty good. If you want a nickname Relican is a classic, because of course it can.

Hey Scott, the content your team produces is amazing! Thank you everyone! The subject of whether to evolve the pokemon naturally or not has been bugging me (no pun intended). I always thought the tier list should be starter pokemon as their time. Ie. Venomoth born, venomoth spot on the list. But if it was a venonat, it should be allowed to evolve. As a viewer, I've never enjoyed the runs where you had less options. While it's good background noise; the runs I'm most engaged in are the ones with many options. I enjoyed seeing how you had to hit an evolution breakpoint to beat Whitney. I just think the final time belongs to venonat, not venomoth. Keep up the good work!

Love the content and how upbeat your videos are. Also, make a Venomoth run that each fight is a different type… lol. I also still have doubts on which type it is. Venomoth, Armaldo, Lugia, Gligar and which other Pokémon have their type doesn’t match their sprite!?

So Sludge Bomb is Venomoth's strongest physical attack, 135 base power because of STAB. Even when Return is boosted by Whitney's badge and Pink Bow Sludge bomb will be stronger against neutral targets. Notably it's better against Red's entire team

Merry New Year Scott, thank you for your vids and all your hard work, love Venomoth, I am sorry you couldn't get more from it, you'll like it in Gen 3, I had fun with it in my solo of Fire Red. I know I sound like a broken record here, but can I suggest HP fire again, ice and ground are good, but you need something to deal with the Steel types when using a special attacker, give it a try please, Beautifly in Emerald maybe I had a theory about Aerodactyl having Rock Slide. Lance is from Kanto and thus RBY where Rock Slide is a TM, when he migrated to Jhoto and thus GSC he brought the TM with him where he may of found a way of teaching it to Aerodactyl. might be because the TM doesn't exist in Gen 2 and thus there is nothing stopping it being taught in Crystal. sounds mad, but its all I got

Happy new year Scott! Nice to see this double-fighting type getting some love. A few people mentioned it already, by Sludge Bomb would really have improved your matchups against at least Karen and Blue, as it's Venomoth's most powerful move and Poison has solid neutral coverage, especially against physically frail mons such as Houndoom and Alakazam. Also, I think using swift against bugsy would have made your fight a lot easier, it does significantly more damage than confusion

Great job, one more time Scott! Congratulations for all your achievements this newly past year! About Venomont, its greatest obstacle is about its move pool, its coverage is not that good really! But I admit I always liked Venomont, but especially in gen 1! Not that much from generation 2 on... So, its results are understandable, given its poor move pool! Hey man, I wish you great successes this brand new year! I already said that but once again, your future is brilliant, you are talented, I'm your fan! Thank you so much for all the fun you have always given us, your fans! Bye!

While the starting in final form rule does mean a lot of old videos need redoing, tbh a lot of those runs could use redoing anyway due to other changes in your rules and updates in your format. Just remember not to burn yourself out.
