In Venice you practically live next to canal, so fire shouldn't be a problem.

They are definitely hot dogs. There is little to no need to drive the way they do. I have over 45 years experience in EMS in the US, from big cities (Southern California) to small cities (metro Minneapolis area). They could drive much slower and still be effective. The medics (don't know what level) working in the back, for all intents, cannot even hope to work with the ambulance flying around as it does. Its a bit of a joke. For someone who loves speed, being an ambulance driver in Venice would be the ultimate rush. For everyone, and everything else, it is a totally unnecessary burden.

I absolutely cannot agree with you on that matter. Time is brain, time is muscle and especially posttraumatically, time is blood. With a severe head trauma, yes, I have to secure his airway on scene, achieve normotension, normokapnia, normothermia, but after eliminating those first killers, the only thing that will save him is a neurosurgeon in a matter of minutes and there is nothing more that I can do in the back of that ambulance. Turning a few knobs on the ventilator or pushing a milliliter of this or that doesn't require a stable platform and if I do indeed have to perform anything more complicated, there is no problem in stopping for a minute and then going on. In case you forgot: Nothing that cannot be done from the seat with a seatbelt on should be done in a moving ambulance. If it requires you to stand up, it requires the driver to stop. Also, you have to remember that water vehicles generally move much slower. He isn't going at 120 km/h (70 mph), he is going at 40 km/h (25 mph) at best. When you are limited to such low speeds, there is every reason to drive this way.

Other than the u.s. medics, those people here will not let on die on the road side if your wallet is empty on scene... and they will give you everything you need now, instead of waiting til somebody arrives who has enough insurance to give you meds...
