Venezuela IS Socialism

Media personalities claim socialism didn't cause Venezuela's collapse, but it did.

“Blaming socialism for Venezuela’s riches to rags story is grossly misleading,” an Al Jazeera reporter claims.
John Oliver claims: “If you follow conservative media at all you might have seen it frequently painted as the inevitable dire consequences of a socialist government."
Oliver blames it instead on "epic mismanagement.”
But John Stossel says: “Mismanagement is what happens under socialist governments. It always happens because no group of central planners is wise enough to manage an entire economy. Even if they have good intentions, the socialists eventually run out of other people’s money.”
In Venezuela, when their socialist government ran out of money, they just printed more. When business owners raised prices to keep up with inflation, the government often took away their businesses.
Yet celebrities praised Hugo Chavez, who started Venezuela's socialism. Model Naomi Campbell visited Chavez calling him “a rebel angel.”
After Chavez's death in 2013, Oliver Stone tweeted, “Hugo Chavez will live forever in history. My friend, rest finally in a peace long earned.” Sean Penn told The Hollywood Reporter that “poor people around the world lost a champion.”
Stossel says the good news is that, unlike American celebrities, "most Venezuelans who escaped their country’s socialism do understand what went wrong.”
In Florida, reporter Gloria Alverez talked to Venezuelan immigrants, and most of them told her socialism doesn’t work. One said, “it's never gonna work.” Another man explained, “it's something that breeds and leads to other misery and destruction.”
Stossel warns that if we don’t realize that socialism is to blame for Venezuela’s destruction, “other tragedies like Venezuela will happen again and again.”

This isn't my first time saying this but I'm doing it anyway. In order for a country to be socialist the economy doesn't have to be centrally planned and run by the government. For example market socialists, as the name implies, want to seize the means of production and give it to the workers (not the government) but continue to use markets. And there are some small examples of where socialism HAS worked these include the Paris Commune where socialists of varying ideologies united to achieve their common goals and Revolutionary Catalonia which operated under anarcho-syndicalist ideas.

John Stossel is a wonderful truth telling reporter. A shining example of what true journalism is all about. My former father-in-law was actually an engineer for a Philadelphia based oil company. I remember he was assigned to build refineries in Venezuela back in the 70's. What a disgusting chain of events has led to the Venezuela of today. Socialism cannot work anywhere for any longer than when other people's money runs out. This has been proven time and time again throughout history. I can't understand why people still buy into socialism. Oh... maybe it has to do with government schooling dumbing down the people through mass indoctrination?

  • @Hedgeflexlfz

Of course socialism ruined Venezuela, they increased social spending, raised taxes, increased government control on businesses, ect. Many other countries experienced oil shortages but Venezuela was the only one that failed so terribly.

Great video agree 99 %. The only issue I have may seem trivial but we are a "Free Market" economy. The term "Capitalist" is a derogatory term used by opposers of the free market. It just doesn't sit right that we would use a negative term to characterize our way of life. I know the term is not being used in a bad way by Mr. Stossel but the other side has us speaking in their terms and that sticks in my draw. lol

I'm from India. 10 years ago when I applied for a passport the first time, the service was run by our federal govt. I had to first download a form which has about 10 pages with innumarable tiny boxes to fill. I then had to turn up at the office on the appt date to submit documents in person.. I got there at 8 AM , stood in a long queue. The officer ( under govt payroll) turns up at 10 AM and the queue barely moved as he kept working at his own pace. Finally I was able to get to the verification desk by 11:30 AM and thank God, I had all the documents right the first time, else I had to repeat the same procedure at a later date. Once done with the verification, I was able to exit the facility by 1 PM. What's worse , I had to take a day off and travel 350 kms to my to get this done as I had to apply at a specific passport office at a specific location, even though I had a passport office just a few kms away from my work location. Finally, I recieved the PP 60 days later. 10 years later, the validity of my PP had expired and I was expecting to go thru the same nightmare again. However, this time the scene was totally different, this time the service was handled by a private service provider. I was able to apply for renewal, right at the local pp office. Also, I was alloted a particular time slot to visit, hence no queue. Also, if I could not get the documents physically, I also had an option to upload them online, when can be downloaded by the officer for verification. I was in and out in no more than 45 mins. As soon as I exited, the company called me up, requesting me to rate their service and asked if there were further scope for improvement. Also, I got regular texts on the progress of my application and received the PP in 5 business days, compared to 60 days the last time.

The reason why so many people pursue the idea of socialism, is because it is easier to understand for most humans. The concept itself is a simplified model of understanding, and can be categorized into a convenient psychological "bucket". Humans feel more comfortable with things that they can categorize into a simple model. The end result of Capitalism, however, is unpredictable and the sky's the limit. That's not an easy pill for the masses to swallow. Not that the driving force of capitalism is unpredictable (money and power), because it is (somewhat). The end-result, though, of Capitalism is unpredictable and thus terrifying to so many. Because it leaves a hole or vacancy in their safety zone of understanding of the future which results in fear or discomfort for those who have not learned to embrace it (Capitalism).

One day America will realize that it's not bad or socialism, we don't strip people of their money or take over peoples businesses in fact Forbes ranked us 3rd in best country to start a business in, and i hope you will understand why no one in Denmark is fighting to change the policies we have, we love them and would never go back to being republican or conservatives i hope you make the right choice in 2020, and do some research on the candidates that interrest you before you vote. - Peace from Denmark and good luck in 2020

There’s one ultimate question to settle whether Venezuela is (by definition) a socialist country or not. In Venezuela, do the workers own the land, labor and capital that can be used to produce their own products? And is the distribution, and exchange of said products regulated by the community as a whole? Well, seeing as Venezuelas economy is largely a command economy, no. If your central government directs the economy regarding the production and distribution of goods, you can not be described as a socialist country. Which socialist principals are you all referring to?

Venezuelans loved the price controls on oil, cheapest fuel on the planet, they wanted more. Price controls on a low cost, abundant commodity takes a long time to distort the market, when they started putting price controls on scarce items , like bread, the market fell apart quickly - bakers are forced to sell bread below the cost of production, they then stop making bread or go broke, then people start to starve or pay black market prices.

America don't need to use 700 billion on military, and they don't need new 20 billion fighter jets just to fly once to bomb a small 3 man tent in syria, US bought 6 drones and they till this day have not been used, federal agencies and departments spent $55 billion on preserving older technology, rather than using newer and more efficient forms of computing, also America is the richest nation, there is absolute no excuses the USD is litterally the global currency, if you removed Medicare and Medicaid you would have 1.2 trillion + a few hundred millions in spare, to make universal healthcare work and make college free so everyone can have the same opportunity to prosper.

The horror of socialism or communism is still fresh in my mind. Growing up in Vietnam during the late 1970s and early 1980s, I witnessed my grand parents' commercial ice making machine got stolen by the communist government agents; their cafe shop was shut down; and my family was forced to move to a collective farm. I also saw many wealthy ethnic Chinese-Vietnameses were forced to "donate" their businesses and mansions to the mafia Communist Vietnamese government prior to paying a huge sum of golds and allowed to leave. Millions of Vietnamese fled by boat or via land route through Laos or Cambodia to Thailand. No matter what Bernie or AOC promised, I and millions of Americans won't vote for them. Whether or not Venezuela's failing economy had help from outside forces, if you have resources you're inevitably going to have outside forces coming at you. Your country needs to be strong enough to deal with it. If you have centralized power, those outside forces can attack your single point of failure, which is usually a corrupt leader.

This is starting to seem like a merely verbal dispute. John Stossel and Bernie Sanders both agree that Venezuelan-style government isn't something to aim for; and they also both agree that Swedish-style government seems pretty successful. Sure, they disagree over labeling the Swedish gov't 'socialist,' but are mainly just quibbling over words. That strikes me as fairly secondary in terms of importance or interest.
