    Britian built trains all throughout africa and india. Basically anywhere the british wanted to trade they would at great expense build railways and train infrastructure. Britian ruled the world back then they had the main debt and banking systems, people had to trade with britian really. Also the royal observatory in england was one of the best in the world at the time.

    The Greenwich Meridian was used by the Royal Navy who mapped most of the world's seas and oceans. The British also dominated the maritime trade, which also used those maps. There is a competing Paris meridian which they still push occasionally.

    Why Greenwich. Because of the Royal Observatory which did a very accurate sky survey. This meant that if you knew where you were then you could tell the time. But much more useful if you knew the time (Accurately) with the aid of comparing what you could see to the Star Tables you could tell where you were. A big help to avoid sailing into rocks or continents, which happened as recently as the 1920s (see the Honda Point Incident)!

    i think when the Uk invented the steam train it might have had a bit to do with it.🤣In 1803, Trevithick invented the first steam railway engine which could run on its own purpose-built tracks. On 27 September 1825, the Locomotion 1 train invented by George Stephenson (1781-1848) transported the first railway passengers from Stockton to Darlington in the northeast of England.

    Amazingly the growing passenger rail network ran without a coordinated time system for a decade. It was the Great Western who in 1840 first standardised on what was termed "Railway Time" for the clocks and timetables across their system. By 1847 Railway Time was used across the nation and pegged on Greenwich Mean Time (which did actually exist back then, but was essentially the name of the solar measurements taken at the observatory and used as the official time for London). Railway Time wasn't an immediate hit in the UK, and it took many years to persuade various towns to actually adopt it. There was something of a NIMBY backlash furious at the idea of these uppity railwaymen dictating to folk what the proper time was!

There simply was no other choice, yet today others can clame those titles all be it too late. Turns out history can still hold truths and remain factual.

    here a little thing about this time line and the date line, its two fold, before maybe before your time. i will explain it the best i can, and you will see how it worked in favour of the biggest event in the world, please read to the end, it might make sense. back in 1985, the world had the biggest concert, Live Aid, with the UK, america and australia, and some smaller countries chipping in it was a 16 to 18 hour live concert it started in the UK lest say 6pm, for america that was midday, for australia its 6 in the morning so england started at 6pm, and when that finished late evening, america had caught up and was now 6pm and australia was now midday, america did their concertt, which on the time line australia had caught up to 6pm, so in effect, every live show started at 6pm there was another bonus with the time line, phil collins played in england siging in the air tonight, after his set, he jumped on a plane, to america, he is now flying against the time zone slowing it down due to his travel, and he played the same song in america during their section of the live show thats why when you fly one way its longer, and when your return the hours are shorter, because of the time zones

    It wasn't just some random thing that Greenwich was chosen. Britain developed the chronometer and the concept of Longitude in navigation which required the chronometer. It surveyed and produced most of the worlds most accurate charts at that time. it would have been totally random and illogical not to choose Greenwich.

  • @ethelmini
    @ethelminiКүн бұрын

    Other reasons: The marine chronometer, an accurate time piece that worked at sea. It gave you a reference for astronomical charts so you could accurately plot your longitude. Because it was invented in Britain it meant the British could produce the most accurate charts & they used Greenwich as the datum. The world's principle insurer was Lloyds of London. Writing insurance policies requires a time when the cover commences & lapses.

    The reason Greenwich was chosen was because it had a very accurate fix telescope pointing exactly south. This meat they could accurately time the passage of stars across the vertical cross hair of the telescope and so time the rotation of the Earth very accurately; and it was the vertical cross hair of this telescope that was defined as Zero Longitude.

    GMT came about in the 17th century by John Flamsteed who was the Royal Astronomer and adopted for naval use by the 18th century. With the coming of the railways in the early 19th century Britain needed a standardized time for timetables and by 1846 the GMT began to be adopted rapidly. This already standardized system across Britain and the empire was a strong contender for the world system by the 1880s when the conference was called as it was well established already.

    Greetings from my yacht. Latitude 50 degrees, 46 minutes, 37 seconds North (of the equator), Longitude 0 degrees, 0 minutes, 10 seconds West (of the Greenwich meridian) = just off the South coast of England, 0.16 miles West of Peacehaven, where the prime meridian crosses the coast. There is a monument on the cliffs marking the meridian. Timezones don't just follow the straight North-South lines of Latitude because of politics. DIfferent countries wanted to keep one zone instead of being split into two (or more). France sulked about being behind Germany, so just added an extra hour, etc.

The International Date line needed to be set somewhere, is it not logical to set it somewhere in the middle of a ocean. No mention that Britain invented the train and so had thd first timetables and ran them off GMT. Or that the British invented the chronometer that finally solved the age old problem of measuring longitude accurately at sea. No, as far as he's concerned an American president should take all the credit. What a toxxpot.
