Velvet Underground - Heroin - Live at Poor Richard's 23 June 1966

Музыка

John Cale provided vocals at Poor Richard's in Chicago without Lou Reed who was recuperating from hepatitis at Beth Israel Hospital. Although NICO was advertised to appear, she was absent as was Warhol.
Poor Richard's was a club inside an poorly ventilated old church in which the temperature rose to 106 degrees during that summer.

God i wish more than anything that every performance was recorded at Poor Richards semi professionally so there would be a lasting sonic record of Angus performing with the Velvets, never the less a tantalising and very tasty morsel.

With Lou being at the hospital, McLise was hired to drum for the EPI shows at Poor Richard's. Moe took up the bass. Sterling and John were on lead vocals. At this stage, Mo's indiosincratyc drumming style was part of the Velvet sound and music, McLise do his best to be as close to it as possible I guess...

Years ago when I uploaded this there was little to none info on these shows. Since Lou's death a few books have been written and more info about the early Velvet's surfaced. I was really dubious about Angus being recalled into the band after all I'd heard and what Lou had said about Angus' professionalism. But anything is possible.

Connie, I have it from Up-tight, The VU story by Malanga and Bockris (1983), a fantastic read for any for any VU fans. For the little story, it is true that McLise had refused previously to commit as a professionnal rock'n roll musician because he feared that the "industry" would have compromised his artistic integrity. After a week with the band, he realized that they were still as uincompromising as when they all were playing together back in 65 and according to Paul Morissey (Warhol'second -in-command), Angus was pretty much willing to get back in the band for good.

I'm guessing the the first disc of Peel Slowly and See was about a year before this show. I'm not positive.
