“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” honestly grapples with adolescent anguish, the numbing pain of a close death, finding yourself amongst pressure to confirm, and the generational toll that sexual abuse within a family takes. But, at its core, it is a story about the power of friendship. The themes the book addresses are dark and heavy, but it doesn’t read that way. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is sweet and poignant. That is high school. That is adolescence. The painful meeting of adulthood, lingering childhood naivety, and teenage feelings. It is not easy to strike that note, right at the crossroads of those three things, but author Stephen Chbosky does again and again. The result is a book that is so specific in its story, its frequent ‘90s cultural references, and its nuanced characters that it feels infinitely universal. This book’s power is in its ability to reach so many. “To me, it’s all about the next kid,” says Chbosky. “It literally is a matter of life and death and to take it that seriously.”

I remember my mother, who went to Catholic schools in the 1940s, talking about books that were banned by the Catholic Church. It only made her want to read those particular books more. She and my father raised me not banning anything. If I was old enough to be interested in a particular book then I was allowed to read it. Reading and literature saved me in so many ways. I raised my children in the same fashion. When my kids wanted to listen to Eminem I didn't tell them no; we listened to his first recordings together and discussed some of the themes. The same with literature. We'd share books. I read all the Harry Potter books with my daughter. We watched many, many films together and we would critique those films together. These experiences brought us closer as a family, and fostered in my children a love of music, literature, and all the fine arts. I think it's a profound mistake to ban books.

Galileo's book _Siderius Nuncius_ was banned because it described his telescopic observations of moons and planets, inadvertently disproving some theories that the Catholic Church had been passing off as divine truth. They feared that people reading the book would lose respect for the Church, which would imperil their influence. It's much the same with modern book bans. "Don't you dare undermine us!"
