Vegetarian Pig's Ears? Finding and Cooking a Lesser-Known Mushroom
Join my family as we go on a quick mushroom hunt and manage to bring home some pig's ears (Gomphus clavatus). Although not terribly well known, pig's ears are great tasting mushrooms, as long as you can get them before the bugs do. We were hunting in mainly Douglas fir at an elevation of about 1500'. Some mushroom safety items:
1. Never eat a mushroom unless you are absolutely certain of its identity. If in doubt, throw it out!
2. Mushroom hunters have a tendency to get lost. It can be easy to get excited about finding mushrooms, get distracted, and suddenly realize you're lost! Keep track of your bearings, and if you're hunting in an area where you get reception bring your cell phone and make sure it's charged.
3. I have come across some sketchy people out in the woods. As always, be aware of your surroundings. At the very least I always carry my knife for self defense.

Thanks Mike!
That coral was beautiful! So many neat things to find in the woods. I'd never heard of pigs ear before. Just butter, salt and pepper? I throw garlic and onion powder on almost everything I saute.. and probably over do it!

You're right, Kyle: Garlic is like bacon, it makes everything better! We ended up making stir fry last night and the mushrooms were a nice addition. Good to hear from you and I hope all is well for you and your family.
Never find pigs ears without bugs, I'm always late. Never have trouble with other mushrooms.

Yep, pig's ears definitely tend to have a lot of bugs when they get older. I am oftentimes too late too and my hopes are dashed when I pick one of these mushrooms only to discover the bugs have beat me to it!
Do you hunt in the lower pacific coast/Puget sound region or high up in the mountains?

Thanks for watching and checking in. I'm in Oregon and typically hunt in the coastal range, around 1500'.
