I'm glad you specify organic bananas. I remember watching blender demonstrations at the State Fair back in the 1970s and the man doing the demonstration said the only fruit or vegetable that you wouldn't want to eat the peel or add the peel to a Smoothie was the banana because it was sprayed so heavily to prevent tarantulas from being transported into the country. I also know that buying organic bananas is not normally necessary in terms of eating the banana itself because the peel protects the banana from pesticides and chemicals. But obviously if you're going to eat the peel itself you want to make sure it is chemical free.

Considering that pesticides and herbicides have adjuvants that poke holes in cells in order to usher the active ingredient into the organism, I would never intentionally eat a non-organic banana.

Organic farming also uses pesticides. Just non-synthetic ones. Which can be more dangerous (copper sulfate for example) and because they're often times less effective, they can even be used in higher amounts.

@@Pyriphlegeton, pesticides used in organic farming are not systemic, they degrade rapidly, and are not toxic to humans by the time the produce gets to market. For example, natural Bt toxin is applied typically to the plant. It does not penetrate I to the leaves or fruits, and it rapidly degrades in contact with sunlight and water. Bt toxin in GMOs is present inside every cell of the plant, and cannot be washed off, and it does not degrade, and is in the active form. Bt toxin is highly toxic to gut bacteria.

@@johnkm77 Please substantiate your claim that all organic pesticides are not systemic, degrade before consumption and lose no health risks to humans. @@Pyriphlegeton copper sulphate can be washed off. As far as substantiating, I used to get into those conversations and wasted hours of my time quoting studies from PubMed just to get more arguments. I'm done with that. If you're really interested, you can do your own research on PubMed.

I’m right there with you re: “likely not going to make this again.” I started making my own soymilk and was left with the pulp (okara). I found out it had some nutritional value in it and so I tried to find recipes to use it up. Then, when I actually saw just how little added nutritional value it had (in comparison to all the work it was causing me), I made peace with not cooking with it. In my world, if it’s not loaded with a bunch of protein and/or not crazy nutrient-dense, I’m leaving it out of my diet. Totally appreciate the novelty, but not congruent with my goals when it comes to food. Thanks Derek!

Derek, try doing this with large oyster mushrooms. Works better than jack fruit. Love the video!

Thanks for this. I've been curious but not daring enough to try. Not sure you sold me though. I was wondering if you've tried carrot hot dogs? Again, curious but not daring enough. I trust yours and Crystal's taste buds!

Wild! I’m so trying this! I’m thinking if the texture was too tough to just use a riper banana 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm not sure, but I think using banana peels this way is popular in Brazil. Great video!! Thank you ❤️

What a great recipe and reaction video. I’ve been tempted to try cooking with peels and have heard of banana peel “bacon”. Might try this instead! “I like big *peasant buns* and I cannot lie”, omg lol 😂

I just tried this and thought it was really good! I like it better than the jackfruit barbecue I’ve made before. Maybe this recipe is just better than what I used then. Any thoughts on freezing the peels and thawing them to make this? Would allow you to collect enough for larger grill out.

I tried making burgers with frozen peels (different recipe obviously). The peels look quite dark and bruised after freezing (not very appetizing) and become much softer. Tasted alright though, so I guess you can make this with frozen if you don't mind the look.

the peels will turn dark as it oxidizes really fast. one way of avoiding it is to wash the peels and soak them for just about a few mins in warm water with salt and lemon juice. That reduces the oxidization. try doing this treatment to a few peels and then immediately put them in a zip lock bag and freeze. with the small amount of salt and lemon juice on it it might be good to use after its thawed out.
