My family is from India. We are Christians, and therefore have no prohibition against the consumption of meat. We had a lot of Hindu friends growing up, many of who were strict vegetarians. Without fail, I noticed growing up that the vegetarian Hindu friends that I had were always pathetic in sports. They demonstrated less endurance and strength than my Christian and Muslim friends who were meat eaters. It could not be explained away by socioeconomic factors, as we lived in the same neighborhoods and went to the same schools. This disparity was purely the result of dietary factors.

If plant based ideology were true, then India should be the plant based community's shining star when it comes to proving their point about the health benefits of living a vegetarian lifestyle. Yes, the vegetarians in India still consume some dairy, but the vast majority of their calories are from plants. They have the highest percentage of vegetarians in the world. So why, when adjusting for socioeconomic factors, do they *not* have the best longevity and lowest rates of diabetes? India is proof positive that the plant based narrative is false.

India has one of the highest rates of diabetes type 2 in the world. A new study published in Lancet estimates that 101 million people in India - 11.4% of the country's population - are living with diabetes. A survey commissioned by the health ministry also found that 136 million people - or 15.3% of the people - could be living with pre-diabetes.

The problem runs deep. Meat is tamasic in Indian belief system, which leads to dullness and decay. Dairy is Sattvic and pure at least so those taking dairy gain much benefit, such as the tremendous pehlwan wrestlers, some of who also eat meat. The dire health of millions of Indian citizens is not helped by state wide bans on cattle slaughter. They would rather abandon the “sacred” cow and force it to wander through dusty streets in search of a scrap to eat. Do you think the cow is partial to chewing on bits of plastic? Hello from Vancouver! Growing up in the Lower Mainland, I notice this too with my East Indian coworkers, friends etc.. I tried some of their desserts once, and it was like eating heavy concentrated syrup. Imagine a Timbit, but dipped fully in heavy sugary syrup then eating 2 or 3 of them. I forgot the name of it… but yeah, very high carbs.

Fascinating…& very thought-provoking. I wonder if the Hindu faith (over milennia) and its sacred Vedic honouring of cattle and other “higher” animals has in a strange way actually contributed to the huge Indian population? The requirement for cereals and crops to substitute meat may well have fed population growth. Also, malnourished humans, toiling to raise crops in their fields, probably needed to create more babies as security…just to help the family survive. And so it continued!

Rather, our culture engenders and emphasizes academic excellence and forgoing immediate gratification in service of achieving long term academic and financial success. Is Switzlerland falling behind? Israel? The UK? Australia? New Zealand? Lot of vegetarians and vegans in Austria and Germany as well. The GDP is not a measure of health or the environment. The economy doesn't work for everyone. Looking at that data set to make determinations about which countries are doing well versus which countries aren't is illogical. Perhaps vegans and vegetarians have other interests besides competing at sports. Maybe it's a personality trait? Human beings didn't make it this far through competition. We did it through collaboration. We've been predominantly gatherer hunters throughout time according to the evidence I've read. Never hunter gatherers. That's a myth by the meat industry like what Arnold says in The Game Changers. Ancestors failed 9 times out of 10 on the hunt. The majority of calories came from plants. This also varies by ancestry and where those ancestors were. Humans have had to adapt to survive. We'll make due. What's best to thrive? I surely don't know. I've gone full carnivore for long stretches. I've gone full vegan for long stretches. If I can choose not to involve the life of animal in my own life, that feels better ethically. Physically I have issues I need surgeries for, so I can't be a judge on this issue. With the Canadian Wildfires raging because that heat dome was the result of record breaking temperatures, again, one should reflect more on the research suggesting animal agriculture is contributing to climate change. We all have anecdotes about our own experience and people we've met in our life following different diets. We can't infer anything based on this. There are many factors in health. Slaughterhouses and factory farms are breeding grounds for disease. If people are going to eat meat, I hope it's done sustainably or at best, be an ethical hunter. You might find meat becomes the supplement to all the plant foods you can gather. Unless you're way up north and it's kill or be killed. I don't think mentality is great for us though. Our culture and society is very much lacking in compassion. Empathy for each other. Empathy for the animals. I'm sure if we were carnivores we wouldn't need any tools whatsoever. I imagine a future of forest gardens everywhere and animal agriculture is no longer a thing. We use our technology and revert to more advanced nomads. Back to gathering and hunting if necessary. If it's unnecessary to take a life, don't. I could be wrong. This could be my ideology based on my experience. I've tried to make up for it by seeking out experiences working on different farms and trying different diets. I've done some fishing. Still haven't gotten to have the experience of going hunting. I don't think I would though. Why do people want to be cavemen? What's so attractive about that. I get the call of the wild and being more connected to nature. Nature's plant kingdom seems more like the food we're designed to eat ideally. That's what the animals eat, and then we eat them. Seems like we could get the middleman out of the way so to speak. Not sure. Apparently our metabolism can adapt to a lot of variation. Maybe it's not even so much we eat, but how we eat it and how much. There are many other factors in health. We aren't simply machines needing to put in the right fuel. Or rather, we are neglecting all the other fuel sources we need to function optimally in pursuit of some perfect diet. Watching all these videos for years about diet has given me an eating disorder. Figures. I have such a bad malocclusion from camouflage orthodontics as a kid, after the summer I'll be wearing titanium plates and screws for the rest of my life just to open my airways. Second surgery in two years for my airways and now these fires and the smoke. It's bending me back towards vegan and not just that. Raw vegan. If I were wondering around outside, that would be the most easy food to catch. Berries, roots and tubers. I'm so confused about life at this point sometimes I wonder if fruits and vegetables were all concocted in a lab. Other times I feel the reverse. I don't know. I have a hard time trusting you. If we can't respect different lifestyles and points of view and debate these matters civilly, that creates a breakdown in communication. Doesn't seem like a good sign of health to be cursing our those you disagree with. I don't know. I've done the same. I don't claim to be in good health though.

Did you even take 10 SECONDS to watch the video, or did you see the title and just want to bash it because it goes against your personal view point? The points made were regarding nutritional content of foods, athletic performance and health status, NOT GDP. You claim you want to debate matters civilly, then actually focus on the points the person opposite you speak about, not turn his point into another which he doesn't even say anything about, then bash that as though you have won the argument. You say "plants are what animals eat, and then we eat them. Seems like we could get the middleman out of the way so to speak. Not sure." Where in the heavens name are your evidence for this to be at all reliable? You speak like an economist trying to be a pseudo biologist. If you aren't sure then why the heck do you preach as though it's the gospel truth. How about spend some time to learn the facts from those who came before you and those who are smarter than you to be "pretty sure"? If you actually learn the hard facts about biology and botany, you wouldn't claim such nonsense. You say you turned to raw vegan, and you "don't claim to be in good health though," that seems to speak volume as to your whole "argument."
