You only to look at brilliantly made, light hearted - yet informative Vauxhall adverts from the 1980's & early 1990's to see why GM Vauxhall started to seriously stuff the main opposition Ford during this period and beyond for the next 15 to 20 years. My Vauxhall, built right at the end of this Vauxhall/Opel golden period is a much loved 2004 Astra G(Mark 4) hatch with nearly 160,000 miles on the clock, which still looks good & runs well.

When you look back at these adverts it's interesting how's some of the cars from the 80s look better than some current models but also how some look pretty awful compared to today's cars, some stand the test of time, others don't.

There used to be a car advert in the 90s for a certain brand ... I can't remember which one ... It had a serious theme ... There was a man driving home, his partner getting ready for bed, his heart rate gets faster and faster (you can hear it thumping in a sound effect), getting louder and louder before his doorstep, where it strangely starts to dim. He walks closer to his car again after his partner opens the door, and then his heartbeat rapidly increases before his partner drags him away ... The advert in question was dark/at night and it was seemingly the exterior of a modern house, I think the car was silver, but I can't for the life of me find the commercial ... I KNOW that I actually found it on the internet somehow, but for some strange reason I forgot to bookmark the page, and I can't find it using keywords in my search history (if, of course, it is still there ...) Can someone help me?

Sounds very much like him. I remember Nimmo voicing a hilarious character in a Dennis The Menace cartoon: Mr Smiley, a green smock wearing child behaviour corrector with unorthodoxly vexatious techniques that, in a dramatic reversal, ultimately united the Dennis-exasperated adults against him, leading to much merriment whence he was bounced out of town on a pogo stick at the animation’s brutal denouement.

It's simple,GM bought the UK-founded Vauxhall brand(founded in 1857) in 1925,and than use it as their subsidiary(Sometimes,it's easier for permote a new product from a old(er) brand, that people already known, than permote a totally new brand) ,and than in 70s,Vauxhall launched two important new models, the Chevette, and the Cavalier, both of them were based on Opel models, and both make Vauxhall's sales began to increase. So,as GM's strategy back in 80s(also the 90s and so on) was all about rebadging and part sharing (I guess ,at least that how it look like) ,and the sucess of both models,it's logical for Vauxhall to keep selling the rebrand Opel models.

Im surprised Vauxhall is still in business. They have to be the most unfashionable cars in Britain. The introduction of PCP finance within the car industry has enabled people to get high end, premium cars for low payments a month. Would you get an Astra if you could get a 1 series BMW for similar money ? The answer is no, and thats the problem. We all know PCP deals are a waste of money in reality, because you never own the car and most people taking out those deals cannot afford the balloon payment at the end, so the dealers make yet more money because you have to trade it in for a new one, and the cycle continues, but for most young drivers, they dont care about that, its all about image, and Vauxhall has zero image. They are not bad cars, its just they are not desirable in the face of competition. Sad but true.

Because of the fleet buyers and subsequently 2nd hand markets. Why buy a BMW when an Astra or Focus does the job just as well half the price. Actually the BMW 1 series is a pretty awful example, it's a terrible handling awful car. To drive the Astra, Focus and Golf are light years ahead, always have been.

IAbsolutely loved Vauxhall using Layla by Derek and the Dominoes for their commercials, did they use La Bamba for the Nova too? Those of u saying about GM, Vauxhall and Opel; It's like the Vauxhall Nova, it was always called the Opel Corsa in Spain and eventually became the Vauxhall corsa in the UK. My uncle bought a brand new turquoise coloured mk1 Astra on a V reg but it was badged as an Opel Kadett (and therefore wasn't a mk1 Kadett as the predecessor, the Chevette was called the Opel Kadett on the continent mainland. My uncle went for the Opel rather than the Vauxhall as apparently they were of higher spec and better build quality even back then. I'm awaiting a new Astra Sports Tourer SRi which is being registered ready for me on march 1st and it's made in Ellesmere Port. I've been told the ones badged as Opel Astra are made there too but I don't know if it's true. In the Republic of Ireland, they have the Opel Versions but idk if they have Vauxhall garages too or just Opel dealerships. Wonder if it makes a difference with them spending Euros now and not punts? Anyone know..?
