The Cresta was mine, sadly it now resides in S Wales. The filming was done at Drayton Manor Theme Park prior to the opening of the summer season. The Top Gear crew consisted of a presenter,Chris Goffey, one camera man, one sound man and a director ! Nowhere near the budget of the Clarkson era !!! The Friary, then owned by Phil Chapman, has also moved home. Both Phil & I took our respective sons on the shoot. At lunchtime the BBC were paying for lunch and asked the two boys what would they like, both aged about 10 at the time, politely declined, but as soon as the director had left they both demanded feeding, causing us to pick up the tab !! The most American looking British car, and also its smaller brother F seies Victor. The Ford Zephyr and Zodiac would be in third place. Still exciting to look at even in sober black, let alone two tone pink and white. Totally different to the staid cars BMC were making at the time like the Morris Oxford and Standard Vanguard.

And the estate 697 AXY is now sitting in my garage and looking a lot nicer than it did in the above show, fantastic cars

I had two of those cars in my youth and thought they were the bees knees, at least they had a comfortable ride unlike most modern cars. I see that one has Butler spot/fog lights, you could change the bulb from the front.

i put the 3,3 in my 62 pa cresta (brown/cream) , stay at indicated 100 mph on any long road south coast to london .i found it better to drive than my mk11 jag and it was faster than my mk11 zephyr.

Never mind get your arm round your girl, the bench seat was pretty handy for getting your leg over too! Always wanted a PA but had to settle for Consul 375 instead.

I owned a Cresta in the early sixties. I was a music techer at a large Grammar school in Birmingham and I had recently been promoted. Pardon the expression but, I really did think I was the dogs b*****s in that car! I really did love it unfortunately, the bad winter we had in 1963 finished it off as it rusted away to nothing

The Salt

Ma had a 58 as her second car. It needed a full respray in 1960. It really needed another by 63, but didn't get it. Rust killed it in 66. Very dependable. You depend on it getting you there OR getting you back. Most of the time it managed both, but not reliably.

Not a bad looking car overall. Its least attractive feature (in my humble opinion) is the grille.

Not at any point did Chris Goffey take anything out of context. He said the PA Cresta was a beautiful car but drove like shit even by early 1990's standards. It's even worse in 2022.. 4+ turns lock to lock, drum brakes with a braking distance close to 3X that of a modern car, crossply tyres, no creature comforts and a top speed of under 90mph even with a 2.2 straight 6 doesn't make for a pleasing driving experience. You have to love the entire experience of owning a classic car because they're invariably really shit to drive by modern standards. People have to be aware of this before they plunge into classic cars. They're not for everyone.

I take issue with some of this. He was right about rust. You didn't slide across the seat but maybe someone polished it up on this car. The road holding was excellent thanks to a sophisticated rear suspension set up, and equal to a Jaguar which was regarded as the best at that time. It was a bit wallowy but that didn't stop it gripping the road. The brakes are alright if you service them regularly, but better still front disc brakes were an optional extra on this model. You have to remember that back then the car in front of you could not pull up any faster because none of them had disc brakes. I believe the PA Cresta was the first British family car to offer discs.

I like the rounder shaped EIP Vauxhalls more.

Styling might have been radical in Britain, where they hardly knew how to style anything less than a Jag, but compare it to an Opel Kapitan of the same era. It's subdued in comparison to the Yank Tanks of 1958. So the handling and brakes were not much. Compare that to most other family cars of the time.
