I like this car-Stylish, Upmarket, Reliable and better looking than a Ford Focus and The VW Golf and i would say better than a 308.

This year I test drove automatic versions of (among other cars) the Astra, the Focus, the Leon. I found all three to be very good cars with not a 'bad' one among them. In brief I would says as follows:* Astra 1.6sri: For ~ most comfortable seating of the three, smooth gear changes, quiet engine, I love the Astra's looks. Against ~ the handbrake far too close to the centre consol so that I hit my knuckles when lowering it (poor design there).* Focus 1.6 Powershift: For ~ very comfortable seating, build quality, quiet engine. Against ~ fuel consumption too thirsty for a modern automatic at least according to the fuel counter.* Leon SE 1.2tsi DSG: For ~ Comfort, quietest engine of the three, exceptionally smooth gear changes (barely audible in fact), stunning looks, fuel consumption (fantastic due to the 7 speed gearbox). Against ~ stop/start can be annoying at first but there is a button to turn it off so small gripe only. Of all the cars I tested the Leon stood out mostly because I had driven a VW Polo for 3 years with the same gearbox and I know how exceptionally fuel efficient that was but also I love the looks of the Leon so I collected one in Alor Blue and its a beautiful car from any angle and I am delighted with it. However, I say all three cars have much going for them and I did not dislike any of them.

If I could afford it it would have to be Golf 1st, Astra 2nd and Focus 3rd. I think the Astra's going to be the best value for money of them.

Speak the Truth How has your experience been with your Astra after 2 years?

If getting one used it’s a no brainer. They’re one of the worst investments you can make first hand buy a couple years on you can’t not get one. Currently driving a 2.0 cdti GTC and fancying a change. The outside doesn’t work for me but the interior and tech of the new Astra as well as the price could sway me. £8k for a 2016 sri, it’s just silly

How is this on fuel?

+Monkeybox Gaming Hi. I've just bought the New Astra 1.4 Turbo Sri Nav model. Apple Car Play has to be via connected USB cable. This is the same cable you get with the iPhone minus the plug. I tried via Bluetooth & with iPhone connected to vehicle 4G hotspot and it doesn't work. However! The armrest that houses the USB port has an easy 'channel' for the USB cable to sit in so you don't have to slam the armrest shut on the phone charge cable to keep it in place. The cupholder is also ideal to put an iPhone 5/6/6s in without it rattling about. Only the New Astra SRI & Elite models have OnStar. Anything below does not have it.

I'm from the UK and we were first introduced to OnStar last year, along with the rest of Europe

Am stuck with one of these now after my lease on a golf 7 ran out and i opted to buy a year old model outright. It feels like its made from tin foil in comparison. The levels in quality are leagues apart from the second you grab the doorhandles It might sound cliched to say it but shut the doors side by side standing outside the car it is safe to say this doesnt sound “just like a golf” 😁. Then get to the glovebox action and the dash itself while agreeably styled is created from paper mache to the golfs granite. Prod and thump them both 2 thirds of the way down towards the base of the windscreen to see what i mean. The seat fabric in the sri is as thin as something from a mid 90s corolla, truly appaling the seats in the previous gen astra j look far better made. I walk past astra js and envy their front seats. Only positive for me is the engine in the 1.4 turbo 150 but my point is on interior quality so not going to dwell on that. Im baffled how many of these reviews and magazines have said its come on in leaps and bounds and almost rivals the golf. Take it from somebody who had the two side by side for a few months it aint no golf for solidity quality etc.

I've always found Vauxhalls bland, cheap and nasty. But the new Corsa and Astra actually look pretty good. I'd deginitely consider them.

+Toria Summers If I were you, I wouldn't spend my money on a 308, go for a mid-spec Citroen C4, it offers better value. If you pick the 208, take a Polo or Fabia for a test drive as well. The aging Seat Ibiza could offer you a hefty discount. I would pick the Focus instead of the Auris, purely based on its looks, and EcoBoost engines. I like Auris because of its big boot and generous standard spec. Overall, I would probably pick the Fabia in Monte-Carlo trim with a 1.2 TSI with 90/110 HP.

Peugeot 308, then Astra, and then the golf (too expensive with good equippment and boring)

Guy 01 Of course! They are no saints, but profit oriented business companies. However, vw is especially bad. Every 5 years or so this nazi created "corporation" has a scandal: -At the end of the 80ies they were involved in some shady chinese currency exchange deals. -at the beginning of the 90ies they nearly went bust but got miraculously saved with introducing 4 workdays a week. Yeah. Sure. -Then they bought lopez from gm/opel, who took confidential material with him to vw, got sued and as a side effect of lopez' work the quality of the cars went to hell. -In the early 2000s it was found out vw supervisory board members flew regularly to Thailand for "down under fun". Paid by vw in order to make them amenable. -And when porsche tried to acquire vw, but was instead taken over by vw itself during the finance crisis, they were accused of market manipulation, with investigations still running. -Now there is vw dieselgate... Such a good company. And if it turns out everybody used defeat devices for diesel exhausts, i'll keep my petrol saab forever. Or until i can afford a Ferrari or an Aston. ;)

alfisti93 your feelings toward vw are the same as my feelings towards Apple, I hate them with a passion, but I bet you could dig loads of dirt on any huge international company, if you researched them. But you're probably right, but there's no going back for me now, I have the golf, and to be honest I've never been happier with a car than I am this one.

Guy 01 Yeah. Apple. What i don't like about them is what they are charging for their products nowadays, without any real innovation. Because they can. Most global companies have some skeletons on the closet, but vw just stands out of the crowd -and not necessarily in a positive way. They are on a "Halliburton" level of making business. As long as the car doesn't disappoint you, thats ok... (And if you want lets say a compact 4wd hatch, alternatives are sparse) One question though: petrol or diesel? :)
