I had a brief look at Rupnik's art. As I'm sure most who have seen the paintings have noticed, the black eye pupils even filling the white of the eyes looks demonic. The body's look limp and spongey as if they are without bones. If I remember my old testament correctly, didn't the prophet Ezekial speak of God bringing to life, the dry bones in the valley of death. Yet it seems the bones in the figures in Rupnik's art have been grounded to powder. The mouths in the figures are so small that they disturbingly suggest another body part that I won't mention here. There is no symethery, hence none of the perfection of God in the figures or their surroundings. The images overall are an assault on the believers who look at them and that assault is immediate.

Is it a universal principle that tone languages always evolve from inflected languages and tones are relics of historic inflections? If so, how do we explain the ‘tonal accent’ of ancient Greek?

@@timobrien72 agree. Christ’s Church should be held to a higher standard, but we are all fallen. And it’s a common problem with this type of assault: power, authority, devotion add layers to the trauma-add in the spiritual abuse and these poor women must have been messed up and afraid no one would believe them. And…it’s a difficult crime to prove even if you report right after it happens; add time to heal enough from the trauma and it’s almost impossible to prove either way. I think the two main motivations for reporting are wanting justice and preventing others from being abused. So even if these women never get justice, they may have some peace if no one else is harmed. As a survivor of (nothing to do with the Catholic Church) abuse myself, it is awful to see Rupnik’s art still promoted. This may lead some to think that he did nothing wrong and put them at risk; this would mean that neither justice nor prevention were achieved and then what was the humiliation and trauma of reporting for? Offering it up can be cold comfort.

@@user-tv6vv5rb8v It was at a morning Mass in Santa Marta, back in November 2016, that Pope Francis mentioned how the world “does not like to think” about the Four Last Things. The reason, he suggested, is that death, judgement, hell and heaven, are just too scary to contemplate. The truth, he continued, is that if you choose to live your whole life far away from the Lord, you run the risk of “continuing to live far away from him for all eternity.” Pope Francis has made his personal vision of hell quite clear on several occasions. During another homily in the Vatican in 2016, he said hell is not “a torture chamber.” Rather, it is the horror of being separated forever from the “God who loves us so much.”

The only way that Archbishop Viganò can defend the truth of the report he made about Jorge Mario Bergoglio being guilty of the same crimes as Ted McCarrick in regard to abusing a novice he was in charge of many years ago is if the victim of that abuse is willing to be publicly exposed to the entire world as the victim of McCarrick, named James Grein, had the courage and was willing to testify. The man who said to Archbishop Viganò that he was a sodomy victim at the hands of Bergoglio must come forward. I do not believe that Archbishop Viganò made this up! The final shot of Dr Ashenden in full flight, wirh right arm extended, reminds me of Father Ted, in the comic series, where he definitely maintains that he's not a facist and that he's not a racist. And of course Father Jack, who suffered from an episode of "agrophobia", pops out from a crate of whiskey bottles, sent as reparation to a Chinese family and Fr Jack was dressed in an authentic Nazi uniform which was part of an inheritance from a priest who was a fascist sympathiser and harboured a german SS officer. If only our worst priests got up to scandals of this level, I think the ordinary people would readily forgive them. Nice photo, Dr Ashenden. We know your where your heart truly is. Keep up the good work.🙏👍

Regarding Rupnik art. I see his art as the same as David Haas the extremely successful composer of liturgical music post VII for 40 years. They condemned his music world wide. Publishers dropped his music from all missiles worldwide etc.Banned worldwide from performing his music. He was charged with abuse 55 various claims. Do to Rupnik what you did to David Haas I say. He should be subject to worse being a Cardinal religious. David was a lay person. This Vatican makes me sick to my stomach to be honest.

Rupnik’s abuse of nuns in his own order may not be abuse of minors, but these nuns may well have been extremely vulnerable. They may well have had less exposure to sexual information than many teenagers. On top of that, they have joined an order which will control their access to information. Rupnik is their boss. Their super boss. What is more, it is or was standard that nuns were isolated from their families. Letters to and from their parents etc were read by their superiors. So there was no way a nun could get advice or support from her parents and siblings. I had that situation with my sister (about 50 or 60 years ago). I knew she was being abused and wanted to tell her to leave the order, but I could not get a message to her. She did not have access to a phone. Visiting hours were in the parlour with other nuns close at hand. No opportunity for private conversation. Eventually I wrote her a letter which she never received. Those nuns may have Ben extremely vulnerable. 😊

Greetings! For what it’s worth, we have learned that the Cathedral had another ordination this Saturday before, (of one of Cardinal Nichols’ Auxiliaries), which we think explains the absence of more English bishops. It’s difficult for a lot of them to get to London two weeks in a row, especially in June, which is high Confirmation season and their Saturdays are often booked. Thank you for your interesting podcasts that you post - I eagerly await it every week!

18:24 @catholicunscripted Rupnick was not excommunicated by the head of a Curial dicastery, ‘the guy who was head of the DDF’, but his own actions were so grievously sinful that he was excommunicated by committing them. He incurred excommunication ‘latae sententiae’ that is automatically at the moment the sin was committed, by the fact of having sinned in this way. And in the case of Rupnic’s sin, of having absolved an accomplice in a sin against chastity, the excommunication is reserved to the Pope himself to absolve. So the head of the DDF had no role in Canon Law in absolving Rupnic. What he did do was to recognize publicly that Rupnic had heard the confession of a nun he had had sex with, and absolved her of this very sin, and thus was excommunicated and forbidden to participate in any of the sacraments and even more from celebrating them.

@@mpkropf5062 It depends what you call gossip. I've just finished listening to Gavin Ashenden's interview with Father Hans Zollner, and one of the things that struck me was the disconnect between official responses to accusations of abuse, and the testimony of the victim. As youngsters we quickly sifted who were the safe adults to be around, including priests and teachers, and who were less so. This was by word of mouth, or "gossip" anything more formal being unavailable to children. It was not a perfect judgement but neither was it entirely hysterical, and it kept kids out of harm's way. Adults by and large were not disposed to believe the words of children, especially in a religious or educational context, and some were ignorant of the ways of the world, or invested in the dismissal of such claims. An investment which came home to roost in the following decades.
