Varmint Bullets For Defense? .300AAC 110gr V-Max gel test

Спорт

Varmint bullets aren't normally a great choice for defense because they typically expand and/or fragment too much and prevent adequate penetration. But the 110gr V-Max is designed for varmint hunting from a .308 and may provide adequate penetration from a .300 AAC. We loaded some up and fired them from an 8" AR15.COM upper into calibrated 10% ordnance gelatin.

I use 300 AAC with 110 Vmax and the 110 Zmax for just those reasons. At AAC velocities the explosive expansion is tamed and better penetration is achieved.

I load 110 V-Max for 7.62×39 out of a 10.5" barrel. Getting about 2200fps. I think i'll stick with that. I don't agree with the FBI's 20+" penetration. In a defensive situation i want every bit of energy dumped where i pointed......not behind it.

I use the Nossler varmegedon 110 gr behind 19.2 gr of 296. My 10.5 with a dot sight shoots 1” all day long. It’s my go to bump in the night gun. Gel test show my round with about 10” and massive wound track. I’ve taken one Coyote and the devastation was off the charts

I reload a lot of self defence 300blk, if you load that 110grain vmax with 20.0 grains of H110 or win296 then do your gel test, you will see that a lot more penetration with a lot more expantion and a very large wound channel.. this is a full power blackout load, that does way more damage then any 5.56 bullet can possibly do... this is why from 0 to 225 yards this round dominates all other ballistics for combat rifles even with a short barrel...

I'm building a 7.5'' build right now and this has effectively become a .30 Carbine in AR form with 110 grain bullets such as the V-Max, or a suppressed weapon roughly equal to a .45 ACP +P with 190 or 200+ grain subsonics lol. It'll be a handy little thing when it's done.

@@nathant3897 I only have a 16" barrel, but I think I can help you out. So you have my chrono data on the Hornady factory ammo from my 16" barrel. This guy linked in this video here did the same test with an 8" barrel + can and got around 2125 fps: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaact9ipl8e2Y84.htmlsi=Szca5XVpoMrvK1n9 So you're looking at a 275 fps loss going from a 16" to 8" barrel with whatever powder Hornady uses. That's not bad at all. Most rounds would give up much more going to such short a barrel and you're still getting better than what the .30 Carbine makes out of a 17" M1 barrel. My guess is that the load Matt uses in this video would probably do 2200-2300 fps from a 16" barrel, which meshes with his calling the load "conservative" in the video.

Shot a big doe at 15 yds this year with the 110gr Ammo Inc load using my 10.5" upper. After field dressing and skinning her, I decided to switch to a tougher bullet for hunting, but I'm stocking up on it for a defensive load. Struck a rib on entry and deflected downward and to the rear (I was in an elevated position so the rib would have been at an angle already). Penetration was around 8" with the projectile doing damage to the far side of the ribcage but it did not penetrate. Meat on the inside was torn and punctured, but not all the way through. Bulging bruse on the outside. You could drop a golf ball through the entry wound. Internally, it destroyed everything in a 3" circle. Never found what was left of the projectile, which was likely a ragged jacket and a thin sliver of lead. The doe went down quick, but for hunting, I want an exit wound. For 2 legged threats, I'm confident that it will to the job extremely well.

Now, out of a 16 inch barrel, these easily push 2400 fps and be on par in power to a 7.62x39mm carbine. The impact velocity in this video has got to be the equivalent of a carbine from about 150 yards

At first, I didn't care for the "AR pistol" route. Then I stumbled upon a great deal on a complete .300 upper. And no sooner, I purchased the upper, the government atf boys, said "THE pistol brace are illegal, now. So, I lost interest but finished the put-together. Then the brace is legal again, and I slowly got into the 300BO, and it has not disappointed, y'all!! The only downside is that ammo is expensive.

I used Hornady 110GR SP loads for 300blckout and it works exactly like the V-Max results you get here, I actually shot a deer in the chest with it and it did not pass through but the fragments peppered the opposite side ribs with about 20 fragments and liquefied the organs into a Gel. pretty messy but was effective. However is does not pass through bone so I stopped using this round for hunting.

Has anyone found any testing done on the 110gr Vmax at higher velocities? I'm working with the Ammo Inc 110gr Vmax load because its available locally and doesn't break my bank ($1.00 per round or slightly less). It's shooting acceptably well (less than 2MOA) and runs around 2500 fps out of my 16" carbine and 2300 out of my 10.5" PSA upper. I'm thinking of trying it for a hunting round (200 yds max for the carbine, and 100 for the pistol). I'd love to see this bullet tested at 2100 fps, and in the 2350-2400 range as that would be representative of shots that are under 50 yds for me. On properties where I'd be willing to leave my 24" Grendel at home and take one of the blackouts, most shot opportunities are in the sub 50yd range. Then again, one option is to take the Grendel, but get a folding stock and throw the pistol in a backpack :)

Great video. I would love to get your thoughts on using the ammo inc, 110 grain vmax which I think pretty much is Hornady, Hornady 110 grain VMAX For home defense. My gun is the DDM4 PDW ar15 300 blackout. 7 1/2 inch barrel 1:7 twist. I’ve been looking at subsonic 200+ grain, and Hornady sub x subsonic for expanding home defense use, but I also would like to buy in bulk a bullet that I can use at the range for hunting and for home defense if need be. My opinion is the 110grain Vmax is probably one of the best all-around all purpose bullets. Thoughts? For my specific gun? Plus subsonic 200+ grain ammo is ridiculous price right now at least two dollars per bullet, where I can pick up 110 grain VMAX for a dollar a bullet from ammo Inc..

Great test. Comparing this result to the result of the old Chopping Block test of Freedom Munition's 110 grain V-Max load, what would you estimate the ideal defensive velocity envelop is? The Freedom Munitions load was too slow to expand and was a crummy performer and you state much faster than this might risk shallow, varmint-esque performance.

I’ve got the 110 Vmax from freedom munitions and they open up just fine, not sure if you had a defective rifle or what not or maybe you’re talking about years ago and they fixed the problem by now Maybe because I’ve got about 500 rounds of the stuff and they all are pretty new looking and I did a five shot test and they were all over 2200 ft./s wich is plenty fast enough lol I did hear that years ago when they first came out they had a problem with the gunpowder they were using or something like that but they have sense fixed this issue so don’t be scared to order from them again they have great prices even on 300 blackout pack of ammo I think like 63 cents a round for new 147 gr fmj s wich is dirt cheap compared to anything I’ve seen online

What about comparing it to the Nosler 110 varmageddon? Ive used the varmageddon on prairie dogs from 50-175 yds with fairly bad results, you could literally hear the round hit the dog but everyone of them would just run off. When i examined the holes there was very little blood. Ive seen 22lr perform better. So i would say that it should perform differently then the Horandy from my experience. Anyways keep up the good work. Also the 125 sst would be good to see, my wife shot a doe at 85 yds with my blk out this year went through both front leg bones and a piece of the heart i was pretty impressed with it.

Because of the "Economy of Scale, I use 125 grain TNT"s for most things, 300 Blackout. Seems a Varmint Bullet would be ideal for SD application. Humans are pretty soft targets, even the 300 pounder. My load dropped a 130 lb hog, and that hide is tougher than any mans.
