VARJO AERO REVIEW - The New King Of High-End VR - Aspheric Lenses, MiniLED Display, Eye-Tracking...
Ғылым және технология
This is the full MRTV Review of the new Varjo Aero, the first high-end VR headset of the company that is not only targeted at enterprise customers but also at us VR enthusiasts. And the device might make those quite happy: We are looking at aspheric, non-glare lenses, MiniLED (!) displays, automatic IPD adjustment and eye-tracking! But there also some compromises. And you will learn all about them in this video!

Can you do a screen shot comparison in DCS of the Aero and VR3? With the removal of the additional lens from the VR3, how does the Aero produce a clearer picture?
This video is so incredible....3 times during this video, you said something - and i had a question...and its like you read my mind and answered it. Specially when you said Varjo got rid of most of the barrel distortion - i was like "how did they do that?" and you immediately went into it.

I was so hyped after seeing the Varjo VR3. Thought the may have improved it even more or made a cheaper version at around 1000€ Then it showed a good headset for 3-4 times the price tag of comparable headset with useless premium features like the auto IPD adjustment, while getting rid of the human eye resolution, no hand tracking, no pass-through and bad sound/mic solution. My personal letdown this year. I got higher hopes in lynx for now..

For those wishing to know about using glasses this is the answer from Varjo "So yes with our headsets you can wear your glasses however not all glasses fit. For instance I have a really wide pair on lenses on one set of frames and can't use them comfortably in the headset however my other pair with standard frames fits just fine."
If I had the money I'd order one right now. Truly awesome, Varjo.

At 2400 €+ I'd expect 120Hz, 100+ FoV, better audio/microphone solution, internal tracking and wireless functionality ON TOP of their slightly better visuals. Removing their human eye resolution field killed it for me, not even the ridiculous orice, they claim to be consumer oriented...

@privileguan9127

@635574 next gen doesn't matter. Only thing that matters is what they offer now for the asking price. And it is pretty bad compared to Oculus Quest, the soon coming Quest Pro, Lynx headset and multiple competitors. It is not IF it was another company, but BECAUSE it is this company. Getting rid of the most impressive resolution feature and still demanding the extra premium price is absurd. @Przemek I read it is 90Hz (in another comment). But even if it had 200Hz refresh rate the price wouldn't be justified imo. It is like an apple product but with far worse specs compared to what they ask for in return. Consumer market? All they did was sell a more widely accepted version of their 3rd gen without anual subscription fees..

It's amazing showcase for what the future of consumer VR will look like. In the past every advance one company has made has been copied by others, so I have no doubt most of this stuff will be available for fraction of the cost in a year or two and might even because standard for VR in not too distant future. Thank you Varjo for an amazing opening and pretty much single-handedly showing that we can finally say 2nd generation of consumer VR is here!

I wish but I highly doubt it. The premium segment will stay premium for quite a while. The average consumer isn’t enthusiastic enough to care about Mini LEDs and ultra high resolutions. Especially with the current hardware shortages, the system required to run this headset will probably cost too much to be considered standard anyway. Mobile processors won’t be fast enough. If you want to get this high quality you better start to save some money. That’s what I’ll do.
@yesyes-om1po
Жыл бұрын
mini leds aren't a VR innovation, all of the display technology comes from the display industry and TVs. lenses could be copied but there are downsides to each of these technologies. foveated rendering is something that can be hard to implement well, eye tracking is expensive to start off with and requires R&D because obviously varjo won't just give their tracking algorithm and code out for their competitors. This tech will not likely be standard for the next 3-5 years.
Can I use base station 1 with this Varjo? Or does it have to be base station 2? In an earlier version, much earlier, they said that it had to be Base station 2, and four of those as well. that was from Mike at VR oasis when he found one of the earlier version

It's not always so simple: for a smaller company, branching too many features from the product line and software may end up costing more at first.
Is there something in the software for adjusting for prescriptions (people who wear glasses), otherwise, those people will have to wait for prescription inserts manufacturers to make some for this HMD, and from my experience with Inserts, they will reduce the FOV by a little bit and add just a little glare (light bouncing between the HMD lenses and the inserts). Very much looking forward to Varifocal lenses! :)
Excellent review and product walkthrough! I just ordered my headset so won't get my hands on it for 3-4 months, but I can't wait. The one thing you touched on that I hadn't heard and that surprised me is the strap sizing. I have a big head (big brain, duh 😋). I just hope I can squeeze into this thing because it looks amazing. I WILL make it fit, damn it...even if it requires a trip to Home Depot. Haha
Hi Sebastian, sorry for the naïve question, but Varjo Aero has natively the Z axis for the backward and foreward movements of the head, or does it need some additional base station like the first pimax? Since I only do flight simulation, I'm not interested in touch controls... Thank you.
I was considering the Reverb G2 but you said in this video that you only got 28 fps with it and you have a 3080. I mainly use my headset (Rift) for iRacing and was leaning towards the Reverb G2 because of the image quality (and price) as I'd value image quality a bit more than FOV/higher FPS in the Valve Index. But with that said I have a 2070 Super and would want much higher FPS than 30 for iRacing. Do I stick with my Rift until I can get a 3080 or better? Or get the Reverb G2 and sacrifice FPS until I can source a new graphics card?
Waiting curiously for your video!
Just to be clear does this fix the near focus problem which varifocal was meant to do? It sure does looks like it when you look near your hand in the hl alyx in the video.. It seems a lot more details than reverb g2 or any other vr headset.
at 5:15(and almost every picture) what are these 2-3 diagonal black shadows spreading across the screen? i recognised this at the varjovr3/g2/8kx comparison video too? are these permanent or is it just from capturing the video?
Ooooooh baby!!! I want one of these! What a pleasure! I’ll have to get my brother to buy himself one when it launches so I can visit him every day! Lol

O no i'm gonna be so tempted by this headset! I really need to wait and see what valve is doing tho!!! I don't see a wire but it has to be wired right?
Isn't only 35ppd only half the clarity of the vr3 (that has 70ppd) and therefore no longer human eye resolution? How does the clarity compare between the two in reality? I think I'd have preferred true human eye resolution and lost the auto ipd..Thank you
Thanks for the review!!! 🙏

Hi, Can I use it for simracing without basestation and controllers? I use Reverb G2 for iracing with 3080 but I can’t use 100% SS in steam VR at some track. Its very interesting you achieved more score with Varjo at open vr benchmark then G2.

Your video pushed me over the edge to get this headset. I've been on the fence about this one for a few days, but your through the lens view finally gave me the information I was looking for to make my decision. Yeah, the visuals are what I'm after. If I upgrade again it will be when this visual fidelity also gains the FOV of a PiMax. Not having headphones is actually a plus for me because I always prefer my own headphones. And I don't care about hand tracking as what I would be using this for will be using HOTAS anyway.
Amazing vajro has done it again and has made an amazing headset! Persoonally I was hoping it would be cheaper but I understand why it wasn't. Unfortunatly it's probs going to be a while before I get to try retena level clarity because I just don't have the money to drop on a 2000 dollar headset, but I would if I did.

Are you a multimillionaire?
Thanks for the video! I am very tempted to get one but I have three things that I am not so sure about... 1) the audio solution is a turn off. I can live with it but would definitely prefer a great built-in solution. 2) the refresh rate. As an index user I am super bummed to have only one refresh rate available. I would at the very least like to have a 120 hz mode so I can run that with reprojection always on, so the expected performance issues are not so bad any more. 3) my absolute main issue is that I cannot use a headset without inlay lenses. No way in hell I will use such an expensive device with glasses. No chance. If I play a game like thrill of the fight with intense head movement, I cannot imagine that the glasses will not scratch the lenses. I have no idea if there will be some available but it is a pity that varjo didn't comment on this point... It is a no compromise headset that is more or less exclusive to people with perfect eyesight or games without much head movement :( I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!
Just put in my order! although I do wish it had vive pro 2 level of FOV the displays seem like they will easily make up for that. upgrading from a reverb g2
Can you tell me if this supports steam eye tracking sdk? I think it's called SRandipal
Looks good but that FOV is still terrible when compared with the Pimax 8KX. What it does have going for it is the auto IPD adjustment and the lenses but is that worth ditching my Pimax? At this point I’m not convinced.
I'd love to have it, but I dont know when I'll actually be able to use it. I still need to upgrade my graphics card before I can use a premium headset like this. And with graphics card prices showing no signs of coming back down, I dont see it happening anytime soon 🙁
So, thanks for the excellent review, but where do I buy controllers? I see the Varjo site offers base stations, but not controllers??? Thanks 👍
what about eye tracking ? did this improve performances ?
Yes, I will buy it, they are my dream came true 😍
Thanks for the review!! I was so excited about a consumer version of the Varjo, but this price and feature point was a big disappointment. The display look amazing, and I'd even have considered paying for it if there was nothing else that needed to be added, but it's already at an extreme price without having to buy the required extras.

It's the initial release, later models will have the other things sorted.
I am really thinking about getting it. Currently working with HTC Vive with HTC base stations and original HTC controllers. Assuming I will need to upgrade? I would like to get Value Index controllers, seems to work great with this.
I already said I will not buy another headset after the G2 unless it has a at least a 140 FOV. This 100 FOV shit is not going to cut it anymore.
What do those 2 buttons on the side of the headset do?
For me the lack of integrated audio, something like what the Index offers, is a HUGE letdown. I'd be willing to pay the price if it was included even though it is quite expensive considering it needs external sensors which are not included, same as controllers. But the thing that worries me the most is prescription lens adapters, will it be possible to use those or would they interfere with the eye tracking system? I really don't want to use glasses, i've been playing with adapters for all my headsets for years now and having to go back to spectacles would be a big step down. Also how is the FOV compared to the Index?? I've read it's quite small, similar to the G2, which would be another reason not to get it.
@turkkaloimisto1558
2 жыл бұрын
There are third party solutions. I actually prefer not to pay for audio along with the headset as I have great audio ready to go.
Will it work without a gaming PC ? and on MAC ?
Thank you for the review. It's tempting, but I'll wait what Steam is going to present us for a lower price for a Index 2 and with that great audio solution of the actual index
Damm those lenses and visuals are insane
What's the difference between this one and Pimax 8K X?
Very tempting but I can't help but suspect the next six months are going to bring something equivalent or better at a much cheaper price. How are the visuals of the Aero versus the Arpara 5K?
How about wearing glasses on the Varjo? Any problems?
0:42 - so how do Enterprise users run this display? Are there actually more powerfull GPU's? I though that the top end Quadro gpu's or whatever they are called, aren't better at realtime rendering.
Hello, first of all, thank you for all your good work 😉 Please let me know when you use this VR headset only for Flight and Race simulation, if we need base station and controllers? Thank you very much 😊
My fear with this headset is that i am prone to motion sickness but with my index running at 120hz solid i feel fine in all my games 90 hz im still okay but much prefer 120hz. with the native clarity of the Aero i suspect there is no need for super sampling. Assuming that's the case, do you find yourself, even with a 3080 GPU and 10900K + cpu 32gb ram at 3200mhz do you need to constantly make concessions to games to not run into reprojection at say at least 90hz? in your clip i saw HLA running under 80!
For sims can you only use 1 base station?
cant wait
HERE WE GO. Woop woop give us OLEDS :)
I knew i'm right with my feelings! ;D Now let's see what they have for us.
Very complete as usual! Well done, Sir! I still cannot afford the new king, unfortunately😕
I'm so glad I watched this, I almost wrote it off after Thrillseeker's review, you were much more thorough. It's a good sign of things to come for the consumer market.
Does the foveated rendering work with all products out of the box?

Yes and Santa is real.
Will you be trying the VR Ears with the Aero to see if it is a viable option for audio solution ?
