British Railways was the organisation created when the 4 old railway companies were Nationalised on Jan 1st, 1948, the 4 companies were the L.M.S, L.N.E.R., Great Western & Southern... British Railways became British Rail in 1969, 'BR' was a latter day affectation...

I saw one on the K&ESR and it had an electric light in it,you could see the light there for miles.
