Variations Vagabondes - Musescore [Berto VAUDRAWN]

Музыка

Composition pour piano solo.
Le thème se base sur 10 notes (do#-ré#-mi-do#-ré#-mi-do#-ré#-do#-sol#). Je prends volontairement des libertés par rapport au thème dans mes variations afin d'accentuer l'idée d'une mélodie sans cesse en mouvement, souvent en errance. Mais le thème n'est jamais très loin.

@@gart3 ah yea I remember that happening. I've just accepted the segmented mode since it actually highlights the beats pretty well. They also recently added entire page sidescrolling, but it's very laggy and illegible.

I can't figure out how you incorporated the theme into some of the variations though it all sounds very convincing in my ears. If you don't mind, what is your thought process when creating variations? I would like to write some variations for myself :)

The idea of this composition was to turn away from the usual form of variation to accentuate the idea of wandering the theme, it is sometimes hidden, often triturated in all directions, and even cut into several small pieces. Here's how I thought about each of the variations: VARIATION I (measure 14): Rhythmic change (like all variations by the way), then harmonic, the simplest variation to listen to because the theme is well cleared in the right hand. [Transition: Acceleration] VARIATION II (measure 38): Much more complicated to find. The first 3 notes of the theme (C#-D#-E) are on the lower part of the right hand, visually we can see them. The next 3 notes are the same 2 bars later. Finally, the last 4 notes are hidden in the double hooks on the upper part (measure 41, black F# pointed + G# - F# and C# follow the same intervals as the main theme) Measure 74: Recall of the last notes of the theme with the right hand in 'reversed' movement. Measure 78: Recall of the last notes of the theme with the right hand (alternating normal and inverted movement) [Transition: Slow Motion] VARIATION III (measure 88): Theme in D major in "retrograde" motion. In other words, the theme is played backwards (starts from the last note until ending with the first). Transposition into C major at the end of the variation. [Transition: Transposition into C# minor with slow motion] VARIATION IV (measure 115): The most melancholic. Here the notes are to be selected because they rotate and do not follow with consistency the line "C#-D#-E". But these 3 notes are present. The second part of the theme is (transposed) on the lower part of the right hand measures 121. Throughout the variation, we find the first 3 notes of the theme transposed in various places. Measure 128: 2nd part of the theme at the lower part of the right hand. Logic would like "E-F#-E-B" but I found the sound convincing, hence the change to "E-D#-E-B". This small inversion reinforces the idea of a theme that is gradually lost and no longer knows in which direction to go. Measures 135 to 137: Extreme tension of the variation, all the notes of the theme are there in the right hand. [Transition: Highlight] VARIATION V: Begins in wandering because we left variation IV where we were a little lost. Little by little we find our way back with the theme that returns measure 158, in E minor in the right hand. Measures 164 and 165: Intervals of fifths in the right hand that recall the gap between the last notes of the main theme. (even if it is actually a fourth in the theme, fourth and fifth are 2 intervals that will often mix) [Transition: Octaves on bass] VARIATIONS VI: One of the most expressive. Notes are added in relation to the theme, giving it a more open dimension. The expression is transcended here by the use of plated chords throughout the variation. Example of spotting the theme: measure 170 we can find "C#-D#-E" at the top of the first chords, and in the same way "C#-D#-C#-G#" measure 177. [Transition: Bass Pedal] VARIATIONS VII: Like a lost memory. Here the notes always revolve around the theme (transposed here in G#-A#-B-G#-A#-B-G#-A#-G#-D#) but do not follow an absolute coherence. The 2nd part of the theme is however present (G#-A#-G#-D#) as for example measures 196 and 197. A stirring memory measures 212. [Transition: note (A#)] VARIATIONS VIII: the last variation gives some hope since it ends with a major sound (going towards the key of B Major). At the beginning of this variation the notes seek a chord path but do not find an outcome, the main key of this variation will arrive only at the highest point measure 258. The theme is reversed (3 notes: F#-E-D#), the notes of the second transposed part (B-C#-B-F#) are directly plated together in a single chord measure 265. Measures 274 to 277: Inverted retrograde theme. That is to say that it must be read backwards as variation III but the heights are also reversed Measures 278 to 281: Simple inverted theme, such as variation III. Measures 287 to 298: repeated one last time of the main theme, with an additional repetition of the first 3 notes. The piece ends almost perfectly, because as much as the right hand restores stability and hope with a major perfect chord in the tone, the left hand leaves the speech suspended with octaves on the 4th degree. Posing the question: "Is the wandering over?"

And to answer your question, the process is hard to explain. Let's say that my fingers look for several paths until I find one that suits me, it is both something where we use our solfegic prerequisites and at the same time something according to our personal tastes, this is what makes I think the style of each of the composers. 🙂

@@bertovaudrawn5824 Thank you for the lengthy response! It is very interesting seeing how you fragment and hide the theme within the variations. You really have inspired me to become a composer when I first heard your music. I never have been a musician but I have taken a number of theory and composition classes at uni for fun and plus they don't go deep into analysis. I usually write from instinct but I haven't paid much attention on varying my melody. Also your form and harmonic progressions are very good, I have a lot to learn from you! I usually struggle with making tonal music that I would listen to myself :)
