@@simpleforging3339 In past videos I saw it being used. I like this myself as more versatile and uses less immediate space. meaning can move display. HFT 1x30 still is at around $60+/-. do the upgrades might be slightly more but I'd think is well worth it. Now to get some OT at work to buy this stuff.

@@soullessone_edc6226 Apologies for not catching the question above sooner. They are both functional options, just with a different list of +/-. If you want the hassle free but bulkier route the Rikon out of box is still good. The custom motor replacement, gives digital speed control, reverse, etc.

I have a hf 1x30 that I have made many knives with in the stock configuration. It is now pretty much worn out. I will be doing this upgrade if I can find that motor and controller. I was going to mount the drive wheel to pillow blocks and use step pulleys to slow the belt speed down, but this is an attractive option. The economy of the 1x30 belts cannot be beat imo which makes spending money on mods make sense. Thank you for this video.

Hey Cliff thanks for the great tips on modifying the Harbor Freight 1/30 I wasn't having much luck with the Sandpaper trick on the main Drive wheel so I actually took one of my skew chisels from my turning tools and I rested it on the front bottom part of the housing then held it steady and shaved away the high spots that were making it so out of round that you can see the other idler belt Wheels vibrating now everything turns nice and smooth

Lolol ! I bought wheels from you last year and modified my HF grinder with the exact same sewing machine motor and speed control! It's a great little sharpener but stalls easily if attempting to grind knives like the big grinders do. But, it is my go to for sharpening. I use trizac 600 and 1000 grit with water spray, one heck of a nice combo for serious sharpening! I upgraded to homebuilt Revolution 2x72 grinder but will always use the HF for sharpening, it's just to easy and a nice setup! Thanks for sharing, your a very kind and generous man!

I may replicate this exact project... ac-->dc adjustable motor on a cheap harbor freight type 1x30 belt sander for all my blade needs. I don't want constant high speed to F up my steels. on a side note: at 7:52 and other times, good thing the human body is at least somewhat resilient to metal dust in your lungs, skin, elsewhere. If you do this for a living, long term, i think maybe some more ppe would be good, like eye protection, breathing protection, and containment of metal filings.

I'm great with the welds and only need information about motor and your choices for the reverse a veritable speed and reverse. I will ask for bearing and wheels information. I'm finding rebuild of my harbor freight junk after I do all of the improvements that junky motor will probably not to be trusted after all my improvements.

This video was worth watching just for the V.S Consew motor link - that unit has endless possibilities. People who do metal fab will be disregarding the old "arm" - it just looks like junk. A new steel mount/arm will be getting made in a lot of peoples heads.. I.E you only need the Consew motor with a drive wheel & a suitable idler - not the original sander. The original sander is kinda irrelevant.. Really good, informative video.

Got the new motor installed, no problems. The only problem I'm having right now is when I removed the spring from the speed controller lever theres not enough tension to keep the lever in a set position, it just slips right down to the off position right away? Great video as usual. I live in the UK, where getting a 1 x 30 was difficult enough and spares would be even more difficult and tax and shipping from the US is now too expensive. I have been thinking about trying some pallet truck (I think you call them pump truck) wheels to build a grinder (possibly 2"). The larger guide wheels as a drive wheel and the rollers as idler wheels. You can even get crowned wheels. I really can't afford to waste the money trying it as an experiment, so I thought I'd ask your opinion as you have developed some expertise in these matters. Thanks

Cliff, on my HF 1 x 30, as soon as I put any pressure on the belt using the platen I get terrible bouncing or chattering (not sure the correct term). I watched your videos and no matter how well I adjust the platen it doesn't get any better. Don't know if its the wheels, the platen or maybe the cheap belts I'm using. Pulling my hair out, any advice would be truly appreciated. Thanks.

Its the belts 99% of the time that have a thick lap joint. Usually cheaper belts. The cubitron and trizact belts we sell dont have this problem. ;)

Out of box the 50-161 will get you there. I use mine everyday. The Full mod version has higher torque, wider speed range, more compact form factor, REVERSE, digital speed control, etc. I suggest just to buy out of box to many people not inclined mechanically.
